Pheew, got me going there! I thought I saw a yawning chasm filled with the filth of humanity, body upon body of writhing blackness, but it turned out to be the toilet and an earlier \'deposit\'. It\'s gone now, but god help the fella at the sewage treatment works. It\'ll be like the four poo-men of the apocalypse!

Come on; it isn\'t Christians who are flying planes into buildings, cutting heads off peoples bodies, preaching murder in their religious services; but darn they are scary.

Not in this country at least. In the region formerly known as Yugoslavia however...

Oh, and the jealousy as the reason for the Crusades: first I have heard that theory, and I majored in Medieval History. The way it was put to me was that the Christian Church (pre reformation) was trying all sorts of things to stop Christian nobles from killing each other (violence on the sabbath or on Wednesday or Friday was a corporal sin, etc.) then found the best way was to point it outward instead of inward. Hatred of \"them\" is a great way to unify \"us\".

...

Too bloody right. Freaky ain\'t it? And the results are still here, ingrained in people to this very day. War-mongering Institutions stink of eggs :(

Ah, the London Olympics...now that\'s an apocalyptic disaster in the making lol

Nope, the UK needs an Olympics like I need to be dragged through razor blades by frisky Hippoes. If the money that has been mooted for the olympics was put to proper sport schemes for youth and adults (everyone then!) and used to build proper swimming pools, tennis academies (state run - available to all backgrounds), free seven-a-side football pitches/basketball pitches, watersports (not the adult meaning), athletics coaching...we wouldn\'t need the tenuous bullshit that Coe is feeding us over people being \'inspired\' by the idea of running at an olympics or whatever. And if the school made sport far more compulsory we wouldn\'t have a health problem in the UK of the current scope nad scale we have now.

Or something...

I just thank God that they passed on NYC. What a gawdamn nightmare that would of been! Yeah... I think we can jam a few more folks into a city with over 10 million people!!!
:p

That beeening said, they should consider Las Vegas. NO! I\'m serious! When I was there 10 years ago it boasted that it was the only city in the world with accomodations for over 1,000,000 guests. Throw in Wayne newton and it\'s a no-brainer. :D

I thought it was Throw Out Wayne Newton and it was a Full-Brainer.

Anyhow the \"Apocalypse Asteroid\" (Apophis) was scheduled to hit Earth on Feb 7 2019. But apparently scientists have rethought their calculations. Either that or someone called Bruce Willis.....

I thought it was always slated for around 2040... anyway, it\'s probably not an ELE or anything. Massive damage were it to hit.

And if it misses in 2036, there\'s another chance in 2069.
However, the math on this \"near-miss\" has been of some question, since NASA \'screwed the pooch\', so to speak, on the first few calculations. This thing has been all over the Torino scale---rated anywhere from 1-4.
I think the last number was about a 1-30000 chance of an impact (to either the moon or the earth)--but I haven\'t looked it up in a year or so now----

For those that are interested, all or most of the NASA briefs are Internet published---a search on \"Apophos\" should reveal a few.

Another good research topic on the \"end of the world\" type-stuff is the Mayan Calendar and the theory behind \"cycles\" the calendar is based on.
There are some very interesting correlations behind the calendar and the dates associated with some of the Egyptian monuments (Spynx, Pyramids, etc). Although a bit far-fetched, I find it very interesting the accuracy of the Mayan calendar as it relates to other significant events around the world----considering the calendar, for all intents and purposes, was created by a culture in complete isolation of the world around them.

Again---plenty of references on the subject, and they make for some interesting reading and conjecture.

@reverend: I think you are confused; it seems you are lumping Republicans and Christians together as if they are the same organization. Not all Republicans are Christian; Not all Christians are Republican. Not all Christians are Catholic. I\'m not. I had nothing to do with what occurred then.

As far as the \"ills\" that may have been perpetrated in the past...they are Past. Catholicism hasn\'t sold 1 million Sudanese Christians into slavery in the last decade, or bombed buildings or decapitated civilians.

As for why the Crusades started I\'m fairly certain that Al-Hakim burning down the church of the Holy Sepulchre was a motivator.

ack, when I was talking about the Christian Fundamentalists blowing us up, i wasn\'t being serious about anyone really blowing us up. But anyway, since the world IS ending today, I guess I should confess my sins now while I have time.

I once stole a cookie from my brother.
I eat dirt.
I was the second gunman.
I sometimes dance naked in front of my minis hoping that they\'ll spring to life and paint me for once.

OK world, you can end now.

Protestants cannot claim disassociation from the Crusades because they aren’t Catholic. The Protestant Reformation happened a few hundred years later, so it’s still a shared ancestor if you will.
Catholicism hasn\'t . . . bombed buildings or decapitated civilians.
Well, the religion itself hasn\'t. There\'s been no Papal decree to kill Muslims. However, lots of people professing Catholicism have taken it upon themselves to murder civilians merely because they were not Catholic.

p.s. I just saw an episode of the Simpsons where Bart and Homer convert to Catholicism. In the end, Bart convinces the opposing sects to get along. Then is has a scene of 1000 years later when two factions of followers of Bart (the Last Prophet) fight a very bloody war over whether Bart said to be Compassionate or to be Understanding.

@Vince: There were always sects of Christianity who were non-catholic. In spite of popular opinion; the Catholic church wasn\'t always the only church. I still had no control or part in what has happened in the past. What happens now is up to all of us. What is happening now is being perpetrated by very specific groups. As far as religion in general goes, Christ himself had much to say about \"religion\".

2 things I wish I had a dime for every time I\'ve heard them:
\"If it wasn\'t for us Americans you (insert country here) would be speaking German right now!\" and \"You Christians started this whole mess with your dadblasted Crusade!\"
As a 35 yr. old American Christian who wasn\'t around for either one of these events, If I can\'t take credit for the first, I can\'t be blamed for the second.
