Since I last updated here the Khorgorath has been through some changes. I decided that I hadn't left enough of that great basecoat colour in the shadows for his skin, so I took the whole piece back to the basecoat. I've been slowly and carefully working in the red midtone to give his muscles some definition - working in thin layers so I can keep it smooth and controlled.

Here he is for your inspection (two layers of midtone with some cleaning up still to be done):

I experimented with taking pics without using my painting lamp to try and get some more of the detail visible. The colours are more saturated, but I think it still gives a good indication of where he's at.

I figure there's only one way to learn - by giving it a try. Just maybe not on something as big as my Giant quite yet....

I'm not unhappy with where he is so far. I have a lot of work to do on him still - early days . There's at least two more colours coming in for highlights and he's got scars and bulging veins that will be picked out as well.

Lol awwhhh thanks ter , arch just something to or not to try you have 2 more colors coming in try and go 3-4 as just adding on more steps 10ball has a saying he calls it for highlighting(hitting it with a contrast hammer) iow just when you think you've given it enough go further. It might look good it might not look what your after in your minds eye. Thing is colors are applied so thinned it really can hurt if you don't like it. One thing is certain pushing yourself to try these things are what going to put you in and around the realm of what you ultimately desire in your painting. carry on either way your the artist use not use all good just advice from this end of the tracky poo!! Lol

I might try adding a colour or two in there yet. My only reason for not doing so at the moment in the "plan" (like I ever have one of those!) is because of the extra detailing over the skin - scars, bulging veins and that large Khorne symbol in his chest.

But I'm completely open to suggestions. Anyone else have any thoughts?

A backorder of models came in to one of my local hobby stores today. And some minis I'd ordered were in the bunch! (more GW - we've covered this). So I've settled down with tools to get some assembling done.

Hehe - I try to have one main painting project going at a time. But I just love seeing the minis come together so I can't resist assembling most of them when I get them. It's also quite relaxing sitting trimming parts and removing mold lines etc in front of the TV after a busy day.

Plus it gets me thinking about who my next painting victim is going to be....

Thanks KruleBear - I'm happier with where he is now than the first time I did the midtone colour.

Pushing contrast is definitely something I have to work on - for some reason I don't do it naturally at the moment.

Last year when I started in the hobby, I put together a lot of models (which I'm still trying to finish)--thinking I was going to finish them all in a week. Most of them stared at me for months before I got sick of looking at them. I stuck them in my drawer of lost minis.

I have a rule now; I can only work on three models at a time. I work on one with a two week 'deadline'. I'm also trying and do a quick 3 hour paint job to keep it fresh and to feel the sense of completion. I'm also thinking of starting another model for a long term project. Something I can spend a few months on and paint as nice as I can.

I usually sit and assemble stuff when I'm spending time with the family but do really do anything. Or when watching TV that doesn't really interest me. Or if I help the kids or my wife with their homework. I rather like assembly if I can spend as much time as I want on it, it's relaxing and easy to set up and pack down (unlike painting), and it is also very annoying to want to paint something just to find that it isn't assembled.

I also do that trick, mostly when I cannot paint for whatever the reason. Then if I need to paint I have no excuses because the mini is ready (no moldlines, no missing piecies) I also have "priming" days where I took the form of a priming machine line. xD
There are some days that I strip minis, but this ones I hate. I do not normally strip minis I have painted, they are miniatures bought at ebay that came already painted or badly primed/stripped.

@WintersKnight - That sounds very familiar. I also had ridiculous notions of how quickly I was going to get minis painted when I started. I have a few plastic storage boxes that I keep my assembled minis in. It sounds like you've settled on a good balance for yourself with regards to projects. :good:

@oistene - Impressive multi-tasking my friend!

@Maenas - I also have priming days when I'll do a batch of minis at a time. It works better than the one-by-one approach I started out with. I haven't stripped a mini yet - anything in particular about it that you hate?

The hand-gloves, the smell, brushing with a toothbrush, those tiny spots that never stick out from the mini, cleaning the mess after, disposing the liquid to the "recycling facility point"... it's no fun at all xD

The academic year runs from February to November over here, which means that end of semester exams are fast approaching. In fact I start in 10 days.

What this means for you lovely people is that I'm going to be rather more scarce around here for the next few weeks. Please wait until I'm finished before you start cheering....

I will still be doing the odd hour or so of painting for my mental health, but nothing major.

Note: That is not a picture of me - but I figured it was better to give you someone nice to look at in my place.
