Additives
I have a few questions about additives to use with paints for various effects. When I use the term "additives" I'm referring to anything from water through to Flow Improver/Enhancer and various mediums.
I haven't experimented a lot with additives, but I seem to have the most success with water (our water's quite good quality so I use it straight from the tap), Lahmian Medium and a 10% solution of Flow Improver.
My questions are:
1) What additives do you guys use and why?
2) What is a good mix for glazing?

I only use water for normal glazes and washes 3-5 parts water 1 part paint for glazes and 10-20 parts water and 1 part paint for washes.
For freehand I use a mix of 50% water and 50% Liquitex fluid retarder and I dilute 1-5 part of that and 1 part of paint (depending on what stage I am doing)

Just water, for me. No idea how much compared to paint, I just add some until it seems runny enough for what I want to do with it.

Congratulations on your high marks Shelagh! You worked hard for them so now you have your own prize ^^
On the mediums: I mainly use water and glazing medium (vallejo). Sometimes I use lahmiam medium too.
The difference I found between water and glazing medium is that the glaze medium elongates the drying time of the mix, it let's me move pigment on the surface of the miniature for longer periods and enables me to wet blend (if that is the word) better. On the other hand it sometimes makes bubbles on the colour mix (not that I am saying that it fizzles, it's just only that more bubbles than normal spring out when you are mixing the colours) and sometimes if you do not wait for the painted layer to dry enough you just "erase" it with the following layer. Ratios I use are: a drop of glazing medium and between two to more "brushes" of water depending of what I am doing and the colour I am mixing. On bigger mixes I put 2 drops of the medium.
Lahmiam medium serves (for me) as a glazing/wash maker for any GW colour you have, just play with it until you find it works as you want. I found that sometimes it leaves weird matt parchments, but that could more than possibly be my fault. I use only water 98% of the time. The water here is very clean and nice and can be used right out of the tap. For thin glazes with light colors, I use Lahmian Medium, and when painting those small, pesky details where the paint keeps drying up on the brush, I use drying retarder.
