It\'s been a long time since I posted anything because of work, but there\'s another paint comp in Japan. I think I really found my mistakes with this effort and I\'m pretty pleased so far! (Still only having painted for a few months!) This took me a real long time for me (90 mins).

my mistakes seem to have been:

1) using paint that was just far too thin OR I would leave far too much water in my brush from that paint
2) Looks like I work better with a white undercoat than black. The reason for this is when I apply the basecoat I can SEE how even the paint is going down, and if my paint is too thin / too thick. I\'ll be using white and grey from today.
3) Patience, this time if I made a mistake I didn\'t stress, just mixed up another shade and corrected.

I\'m really scared about adding a final highlight like Brokenblades farseer (it was 1:1 blood red:skull white). What do people think?

Nice start and it looks like you have learned the most important lesson of all - patience! :yes:

The red/grey combination looks very nice.

With regards to the highlighting, it depends on whether you\'re aiming for something that looks good in real life (eg for the competition) or photos. If it\'s the first then go with what looks good to you as you are the only one here who can see it in real life. If it\'s for photographng and submitting here, you usually need to go at least one level further for it to look good in a picture.

in real life it looks a lot brighter but I really want that \' pop \'. I might do it, if not I can always glaze it back.

The red looks fantastic! Completely smooth and it looks like satin, I can\'t fault it at all. I wouldn\'t do a further highlight if I were you, but it\'s your mini ;) I do think the grey is a little flat in comparison though. Look forward to seeing more on this one!

PS: Did you have to get this in the box set, or did you buy it separately? Cheers :beer:

The grey is very flat yeah, its just a basecoat right now - i\'ll bring it up tonight.

@Bill: I bought the boxset, if I can get the main Farseer finished I\'ll paint the rest, I even planned to make a small piece of terrian to place them on... However the final date for the comp is the 31st Jan. So maybe just the farseer!

I think I will try and add a final highlight, Not sure about white though, maybe blood + white, then white but a glaze over it.. dunno yet.

I\'ll be doing the cape tonight, probably purple... I\'m not really sticking to a Craftworld theme and I love purple! :D

@Squig: Thanks, I\'m gonna work hard to make this one good! (and try to win). I\'m up against QiaoZhong however... >_<

Theres some gorgeous stuff in QuioZhongs gallery thats for sure!

But this is a fantastic start!!! If you can keep going at this standard I am sure you will give him a run for his money.:)

I spoke with him recently too, he\'s also painting Eldar! The Bonesinger! :)

The competition is to paint a 40k general, then in a few months they\'ll be a comp for troops, then fast attack, vehicle until we\'ve all built an army! I\'m not too interested in the gaming side, but the idea is great and the winner gets a boxset from that army.

I hope I can maintain this level, I\'m tempted to try NMM on the patterns on the chest but that\'s a new area for me too .. maybe even some freehand on the outer and inner cloak.

Swords!? I doubt that! Lemme get this mini out the way first :)

Nice pic in the GD Supplement in the new White Dwarf btw! Great mini too.

Small update, but still nowhere near finished cape. I\'m having trouble highlighting purple :(

I tried codex grey, it goes ok but a little too lilac, white a little too pink... I\'ve got some Vallejo purples too tempted to try those too..

* Royal Purple
* Blue Violet
* Violet

I basecoated with liche, shade down with thin layers of black and a touch of purple. Help! :D

@Cadian: The cape is actually purple! My cam sucks, the blending is the same though but still it\'s not smooth enough. Gotta work on it more today.

Blending large areas is a pain in the ass.. :) Might try to finish the reds today... (Upper body and arms)

Says in his bio he\'s been painting for four years - at the rate you\'re going, you\'ll be winning swords in two years! Have no fear! :D

Nope, says since 2000! But he hasn\'t updated how long for 3 years ;)

@Arma - The farseer is turning out mighty fine :D What part of Japan is the competition in?

Looks great so far. Very smooth colors.

You could try adding Bleached Bone to highlight the purple. BB makes for very smooth highlights and blends well in my experience.
