Article: GW Foundation Paint Set

I was at one of the local US GW Hobby Centers over the weekend and was discussing the new Foundation Paint Set with staff. The Set is currently available for pre-order and the pre-orders will be available in April. They are only manufacturing a limited production of this Set for pre-order in the US, I believe the number mentioned was somewhere around 1,000 to 1,500 total, with about 600-odd pre-order sets remaining. Don\'t quote me on the exact numbers (my memory for numbers is horrible), but I was talking with a store manager and a district manager and exact numbers aside, the general impression is that they are expecting to fill all the pre-order availability for the Foundation Paint Set fairly soon due to demand and that once this limited production availability is filled, everyone else will have to wait until the general release later in the year.

General release of the Foundation paints is scheduled for Late Summer 2007, which I was told would likely mean July or August. The current preorder price for the 18-paint set is $45, working out to $2.50 a pot, and they will cost more (I\'d wager at least the current $3 price of the regular non-metallic paints) when released later in the year. If I\'m understanding correctly, these new paints will not be sold as a set once in general release but only as individual pots.

They currently have the sets in-store now for \"testing\" and it\'s a pretty good spread of undercoat colors - I didn\'t get to try them out myself, though, as I didn\'t have a lot of time. The new paints are primarily colors to match most of the popular armies\' main base shades and an assortment of other general-purpose undercoat hues (red, flesh, yellow, green, purple, blue, etc.)

Here\'s all the colors in the Foundation Paint Set, which come in 12mL flip-top pots:
Iyanden Darksun (brownish-yellow), Tallarn Flesh (brownish-pink), Adeptus Battlegrey (black-blue grey), Mordian Blue (mid-range blue-white, a little lighter than Enchanted Blue), Mechrite Red (a little lighter and not as blue-tinged as Scab Red), Calthan Brown (generic mid-brown), Khemri Brown (dark brownish-grey), Macharius Solar Orange (brownish red-orange), Orkhide Shade (black-green), Gretchin Green (a drab, darkish olive), Fenris Grey (dark blue-grey), Dheneb Stone (neutral grey), Charadon Granite (black-grey), Astronomican Grey (light bluish-grey), Hormagaunt Purple (dark greyish-purple), Knarloc Green (dark greyish-green), Necron Abyss (reminiscent of dark blue-green), and Tausept Ochre (red-tinged lighter brown).

Actually, these are being marketed as both a one-coat basecoat AND a brushon primer. You can paint these right over bare plastic.
This is the reason they think it will be ideal for kids, because it will remove the step of spraying primer and make it much easier to get that vital base-coat on. No reason that it cant be a good tool for experts too, though. If this works as planned, and I have seen it being used, it will be the most revolutionary thing in paint formulas in years.

But I still love my Reaper Masters and P3\'s

Had a play with these today at my GW store. I am buying some. I thinned them down to my usual consistency and the coverage was awesome. I was playing with a plastic goblin they had primed there and I tried a quick shading highlighting job and I was pretty happy with the result from about 30 minutes work.

They are also a lot more matt than the normal GW paints.

They\'re good! I painted quite a bit with them, and they do exactly what they are made for. Great coverage over any color! They dont seem to separate as Vallejo does, though I do recommend a soft stir every now and again. They indeed come out very matte, and I found this actually helps the layering over it. I can only compare it with Vallejo as I haven\'t tried out the new P3 paints yet.

The foundation paints will definately find their way in my paint set. Oh, they are indeed the same volume as regular paints: 12 ml.

Iv used them at a demo at the local GW, but i find they are no better than the p3\'s. (Not that im saying they are worse)
Il stick to p3\'s, more bang for my buck.

Well I spent Yesterday afternoon trying out the new Foundation Paint set and to be honest I’m really surprised at the High Quality. Looks like GW have hit the nail on the head with these. Granted their aim is to make Army painting easier and that it exactly what they do.

Coverage:The paints are aimed at giving single coat coverage and either diluted or used straight from the pot that is what they do. You get good clean coverage without patchy spots and no black primer showing through.

Consistency: These paints have a much higher Pigment concentration, which is what allows them to provide the single coat coverage, but as the pigment is finer there is no graininess evident in the paint and it looks very smooth. The thin down to washes and glazes with a bit more dilution and are equally as effective as the original range.

Continuity: These paints mix well with the existing colours without any strange reactions.

Colour: There are 18 colours in the set and they complement the existing colours very nicely. There are 3 good greens, Orchide shade, Knarloc Green and Goblin Green (or was it Flesh?). These will make an Ork army painters life much simpler. I used Knarloc green Washed over with Orchide and then lightly dry-brushed with Knarloc and then Goblin and a very good Green skin suitable for most armies. The Mechandrite Red gave a good and surprisingly bright Red straight over the Black Primer. Anyone wanting to paint Khornate themed Armies will love this colour. There is a suggestion that the colours do have a similarity to Vallejo Model colours but that’s not going to be an issue with a lost of people.

Containers: GW have returned to the polyethylene plastic of the Round White topped pots of the 80’s. The lids do require some effort to pop open but have a well designed hinge and a lock to keep the pot lid open at 90 degrees. The look of them is somewhat like a Shorter and Fatter Dalek, and I know someone who is intending to convert at least one into a Dalek, but she’s Dr Who mad. (or at least David Tennant mad.)

All in all these are good paints. Someone wanting to build an army quickly will benefit from them, and more proficient painters will come to find them an asset. They paints sets will only be a Splash Release and separate pots will become available around Christmas alongside the existing range.

BRUSHLICKER ALERT. One thing I did find out…….They Taste B****y Awful, and I mean awful even worse than Flesh Wash. :D But as my local store manager said “They’re paints, you’re not supposed to eat them!”

Hold on isn\'t that the whole point of painting in the first place???

Those that don\'t lick thier brushes are a very strange group of individuals and in obvious need of theropy :D

had a play with them on thursday, for once i found a gw product surprising me.

bllody good they are, didn\'t rate them for glazes (gave it a try) but for washes they were great.
my only gripe was they lighting in the bolton store, that\'s something the paints can\'t sort out lol

I was told there was a limited supply of sets per store (60 or something) then the general release would be July.

Plus the American branch of GW want all of our sets that don\'t sell on day one, so if you want a set, i would definately advise putting the deposit down....quickly.

I was assuming that, but its best not to argue with some of the staff...you never win :p

Are they not liquid pigment now? Instead of ground?

I\'ve got to say that I\'m surprised at the apparent quality... Originally I was going to pass but after Dragonsreach\'s review I\'ll need to check these out. Thanks ;)
