looking for some help with MS Word!

Yep, Word.....Nothing to do with painting.

I have a 600+page document that has been written in a template. Now this document has alot of tables in it. Alot. Its a database schema. What I need to know if anyone can help me, is there a way to move it to a new template without cutting and pasting every bit of it?

Don\'t make me cry and say no (or suggest copying and pasting), if anyone knows this stuff please share it :D

Shaz:
Has it been saved as a template ie a .Dot exension or as a .Doc format.
I can\'t remember which one, but one of them will allow you to export either highlighted sections or specify pages to export.

One day.....

..someone\'s gonna follow that advice and sue you:D

Shaz: If \'save as\' and \'export\' doesn\'t work. Try importing it instead.???

The templates are in .dot format. The original doc has it embedded now (so .doc).

As for exporting, isn\'t that exporting to another app such as excel??

I\'m not a microsoft wiz by any stretch of the imagination, so i could be talking alot of rubbish, and if you have the answer, you may need to write it in idiot speak :D

Its the template that the document is written into that needs to be changed, not the document itself. The templates are like a complicated version of the letter/fax/report templates that word comes with. As it is more than 600 pages long with lots of styles attached, as well as tables in the doc itself, I\'m trying to avoid the cut/paste thing like the plague and find a way to just apply the new template.

Err, yeah..right....

Save as, what used to be called \'rich text\' format, and then import into the new template...???

Ta,

First off, Bill Gates is the AntiChrist and any of his programs (Microsoft) are hellspawn. Word is an archaic program written for secretaries as an intro into the big world of computers. It is a nightmare to use and totally incompatable with nearly anything out there in my world of graphic design and publishing. That being said, whenever I run across a Word document I export it as a PDF file, then alter it with Pitstop, an Adobe Acrobat plug in that allows text and image editing in a PDF file. I think it is possible somehow to import the text into a simple text file but you are risking reflow, as well as loosing your charts, not to mention that there is a size limit to simple text as well. Look on Versiontracker.com , which is an incrediable source for freeware/ shareware programs. This may also give you some options for importing / exporting text out of a Word templete. Personally I love my Mac, I use Quark, InDesign or simple text as well as Apple Works for my text / graphic documents. This is an option to consider, IMO. Good luck...

Ok, I just made a .dot, then \"Saved As\" a .doc
and it seemed to work fine. You can then just \"save as\" another template if you wish.

dont buy a mac

i use both mac and pc at work (dont ask) and i really dont think one is better than the other! neither is more stable, and neither is easier to use. Also, as most programs are available on both platforms now, there really isnt the great difference between them that there was 10 years ago.

Stick with what you know!

The problem I have is that I have the second template already made (we have to put all of our reports in this template), and the current doc is in an older version of this template. I\'m not understanding how saving as is going to help me here. Its like having something written in the letter template and wanting to put the data in it into a fax template instead. Am I missing something blindingly obvious here?

As to the mac idea, not an option for me. I have a work supplied laptop. Its al I\'ve got :D

Ctrl -Alt -Delete? Thought about it several times!

Hmmm....

..Shaz, when you create a normal document in Word, it uses the NORMAL.DOT file. So, if you created your report by clicking on File, New then picked a template, it will be using whatever template (.DOT) file it represents. The document is saved with the template it was created with.

So, if you want to change the template, create a blank doc using the file, new and picking normal (or whatever template you want to use) and then cut and paste the text from the other doc.

I shouldn\'t need to remind you to keep a backup of your original doc before you do this of course :D

I wanted to avoid the cutting and pasting as it is 620 pages with alot of tables in it. If it was a max of about 50 pages I would have cut and paste no problem......

How about cutting and pasting from the new template, onto the .doc and fixing it as you go?
