I agree, Guawol. While you could just use figures from Big Child Creatives, a more random mix of scoundrels and rejects definitely seems more fitting of a pirate crew!

Thanks, BAM! Ha, well at this point I'd just like to finish something! I'll keep bouncing back and forth between projects. The only thing on a tight deadline is the orc brave. I need to finish the painting journal for the KS and I want to enter it in the 'Eavier Metal competition. Thankfully the deadline isn't until August 31st, so no time crunch yet. For everything else, I've got until the end of March to make it to Crystal Brush. And thanks, she had a great time at the park and loved meeting Mickey and Minnie.

Damn, I really like the orc dude. While all your realistic historic projects are amazing, I love it when you show off those color skills.

Thanks!

Well, having done the black leather, last night I turned my attention to the brown worn leather belts. I didn't have a lot of time to paint, so I just focused on the one around his chest. But I'll do the other belt around his waist the same way.

And a close up...

For the shadows, I mixed in Burgundy Wine with the dark brown (50/50). That dark purple is also in the shadows of the green, purple, and red portions, so it adds consistency to the figure. In the midtone, I mixed in teal with the medium brown (40/60). That turned it into almost a green-brown (though not too strong). I felt it fit better with the overall figure than a more yellow looking brown.

Textures & colors like these are why everyone loves your fantasy pieces, Bailey! I'm amazed at what you're doing here.
Please do combine Redghar with the dwarf captain. That's a dream team.

I've got to say David that orc is looking fantastic. You clearly have your heart set in the historical genre but in my opinion your best work is in the fantasy area.

This orc is still my favorite of your projects so far, and that's saying a lot because everything you do is so wonderful. Glad I came back just in time to see him be finished up. :D

Thanks, everyone! Oh, fantasy still has a special place in my heart. I'd never want to paint 100% historical or 100% fantasy, I enjoying back and forth.

The last two weeks have been a bit up and down, but I did get some painting done. Since I'm planning to create a multi-figure scene, I decided to put some time in on two of the figures. For the most part I continued on with the leather bits. I did the other strap on the orc and his boots, then took on the hat for the dwarf. In addition, I redid the dwarf's red coat. The level of contrast on the dwarf didn't quite match up to the orc, so I will be redoing most of his clothing. The shirt and pants will be redone soon too.

Here's a closer look at the latest on the orc...

And here's the dwarf

As with the work on the orc, the focus for the leather on the dwarf was texture. There was a bit of distressing along the edges of the hat, but the rest was pretty much smooth. So the highlights were applied a bit unevenly to imply texture. Some cracks were painted in too.

Would it be worth adding more colour to the Orc's face? The eye is drown more to his chest/sash than his head. He may become background decoration if he's put next to the brightly colour dwarf pirate.

Both models look great! If you don't mind me asking what colors did you use for the orc's skin? I have a troll miniature coming in soon and I like the colors you used, so I wouldnt mind a reference to point me in the right direction. ;)

Thanks, guys!

Guawol, the recipe is probably buried somewhere in the comments of this post, but finding it isn't easy. So here is it again:
The base color is a mix of Badger Minitaire's Dark Green and Reaper's Burgundy Wine (2 parts green to 1 part burgundy). The shadows are created by adding more Burgundy Wine. The highlights are done by adding a 50/50 mix of Dark Elf Highlight and Vampiric Shadow to the base color. Eventually I stop and just add in pure Vampiric Shadow. I've also painted some purple sections on the skin (nose, around the eyes, and the lips) using Burgundy Wine, Imperial Purple, and Vampiric Shadow.

The exact paints aren't important, you can get similar results from other brands. The keys are mixing a dark purple and a dark green, then adding a medium grey (for Dark Elf Highlight + Vampiric Shadow) followed by an off white (Vampiric Shadow).

Thank you very much Bailey. I'll have to tweek the colors to what I have, but having the starting point will be extremely helpful.

I wouldn't have guessed at purple and green for the skin. Excellent stuff as always Bails.

Dwarf pirate is looking great as well, and very angry about something. Short man syndrome? Missing a leg? Who knows?

Thanks, everyone!

I haven't had as much painting time in the past week as I'd like, so only a little bit done on the pirate dwarf. I've focused on redoing old sections to help fix the shading and contrast and bring the piece in line with Redghar. The work is easier to see in side by side images. The main changes are to his off-white shirt and the yellow details on the coat and head covering.

I swear I'd shaded the shirt in the previous version, but it was way too subtle. The side by sides clearly show the difference. And, as you can see from the unchanged portions of the figure, the lighting is as close as I can get to being identical for both images.

I also spent some time making the shadows on the striped pants much much darker. It was really time consuming and yet doesn't show up in the photos (since it's mostly on the underside of the pants). Once I have some more time I will continue that up the side of the pants and give them the same treatment I'm giving the rest of the figure.

The changes look great on their own (without reference to Redghar). The work on the shirt really helps establish the nice shape of his impressive beer belly. The little areas of wood grain look really nice.
