I like the mini it's going along the "porky" gladiator look. I like that idea, looking back there was the bare knuckle champion of the UK "the governor " he was a monster of a man but kind to his dear old mam he was no light weight. I think these guys were cast in the same mold. The musculature is the clincher for me well sculpted and very well painted.

And now for something completely different...

My parents were visiting this past week and my dad brought along this little figure he that recently picked up. It's a 54mm confederate lieutenant from Pegaso. My dad is a big Civil War buff and I've painted a couple figures for him in the past. Looks like this one will end up in his collection too. I'm going with an end of the war, road to Appomattox scene. The figure will be holding an old tattered flag in his left hand, so that should be a fun mini project. I won't be doing the traditional confederate flag, instead I'll go with one of the state flags or a brigade flag. I need to do a bit of research first to find one I like. I'm still pretty early on the project. I've blocked in the main colors for the uniform and then painted the face.

Here's a close up of the head. Sorry the focus isn't as crisp as I'd like.

That face looks amazing, beautiful work. It's hard to find Civil War era flags from the South that didn't have some kind of Confederate flag motif, but this is the flag of Lee's Northern Virginia Army which could work:

Neat project! I have only done one gift mini so far but it was very well received. It was Scibor's Dwarf Santa in a diving bell for my wife. Nice little mini. Makes an awesome Christmas tree ornament. I keep wanting to get more of his stuff but get distracted.

Catch light on the shadowed eye looks really great.

So the base for this guy is pretty wide open right? Maybe some burnt dollhouse ruins? There is a great 1/48 stair way kit I have been eyeing but nothing in 54mm or 1/35. Maybe some model rail stuff? Sherman tearing up the rail roads was a big deal right?

Okay so I know you are basically done with the face, but the top of his jaw straight back from his nose is bothering me a little. It looks a little too wide, like maybe he is supposed to have more hollow cheeks? Or maybe the highlight below his eye is too large? I wouldn't mention it, except that I know you could turn this guy into a beautiful woman with a few quick brush strokes :)

Hmmm... I think I see what you mean about the face. You're saying the highlight on the left cheek extends too far back, correct? Or are you talking about the diagonal line in front of the cheekbone?

Yeah, plenty of base possibilities. My dad's been reading a book on the Appomattox so I'll probably pick his brain for some ideas.

I made a little more progress on this guy today. I added some detail to his shirt and then took a first pass at his coat. I still need to fix some of the blends, so I'll give it a few glazes to smooth that out. And there are some shadows that I'm not quite happy with, but it's getting there. The box art tripped me up a bit. They had painted part of his haversack the same color as his coat (I guess they got a little confused). But after taking a closer look at the sculpt I was able to figure out what was supposed to be what. I decided to go with a black haversack (could have been white instead). His canteen strap overlaps with the haversack strap, so a white strap overlapping a black one is going to stand out a lot more than two overlapping white straps.

Thanks, fluisterwoud. That's definitely a good flag possibility. My dad pointed me in the direction of a good reference book (Echoes of Glory), so I'm going to see what I can find in there. But, currently the one you posted is the best option I've seen.

Thanks, Exiled.

What! That plaid is redonkulous! Come on, where did you get a pot of Reaper Brawny Plaid??? Dude, I have a box of metal Harlequins with your name on them! You know a lot of these guys were self equipped. I think it would Be perfectly ok to have some matching plaid on his canteen or maybe poking out of his bedroll. Man, if you can paint it that good maybe he should be wearing plaid pajamas!

Okay, here is what I was talking about the face. I played with it in photo shop and I think it's not the skin but that maybe you need to paint in more of a side burn? Or paint in the beard? Can't tell from the photo. Take look and let me know what you think. I hope this isn't too presumptuous of me. I also fixed the freehand on his hat :D

Says the guy who painted the freaking earth on an astronauts visor. I think you can handle a simple checkerboard pattern after that.

Thanks, that makes your comment about the face much more clear. I'll play around with the shadows and perhaps try to bring in the hairline. I stopped where the hair sculpt stopped, but I can still fake it a bit. I do I like the freehand on the hat, although that fine a detail may be beyond my abilities. Too bad.

:)

Yeah I bet just painting in the hair a tiny bit should be the ticket.

Here is an awesome flag resource I stumbled on:

http://www.flagcollection.com/searchresults.php?searchtype=keyword&keyword=appomattox

I like this one:

General George A. Custer's Third Personal Civil War Cavalry Guidon.
This flag was only flown when Custer was on the field. This was one of Custer's more famous flags, as it served with him in the Civil War while commanding the US 3rd Cavalry Division from 1864-1865.

You could always give me a shout out and give him the flag of the regiment whom I deployed to Iraq with in 2007-2008, 2009-2010, and Afghanistan 2012-2013. The 23rd Infantry. The Tomahawks. They were constituted 3 May 1861 in Connecticut...but here is where the fluff contradicts...we were Union :( So there goes that idea, I suppose.

Sorry Demihuman, but I must disagree with you on his face. While it does appear overly broad, it doesn't look unreal and in fact is an appealing feature to me. Has the broad, honest face of a Scottish-American rifleman. I've seen faces like his anyway, framed as it is in all this manliness.

was going to ask, what colors did you use for the midtone and then for the cheekbone shading? I like it, looks like a subtle purple-brown. I think you use mostly MSP on your skins, don't you?

You still doing the gladiator?

For the base i would do a crude wood post fence that intersect in one corner on backside of the plinth. Then some simple field grass or maybe even a little corn or other staple growing. It you could have him just breaking camp. A bedroll or two on the ground. A blackened fire pit with spit that has been extinguished. Civil War sounds fun.

That would be cool, BFK. Though I may have to save that idea for next time I do a union figure. I could have the confederate holding a captured northern flag, but that changes the story of the piece. I was going for an end of the war piece, I think it fits his look better.

The face is my usual mix, reaper rosy shadow for a midtone, chestnut brown for the shadows and fair skin and fair highlight for the highlights. I then go back over with some red and purple glazes, so I think that's where you're getting the purple brown vibe.

Yea, I'm still working on the gladiator (and the other gladiator from a few months ago). I put the Arena Rex figure on hold. I might want to use it in the Massive Voodoo contest that's coming up. If it's the same rules as last time I need something that hasn't been shown in a finished state online.

They haven't said much about it, just this single announcement back in mid October. But the start date is Nov 17, so I'm guessing you'll see more then

They've done one before. Here's a link to that one and the rules. I'm guessing this one will be similar but I'm waiting to see if they've changed anything. At least last time most of the entries had to be a group of figures with at least one new figure (never shown in a finished state online). The other figures can be whatever you want. They also did a lot of random draws for prizes, so there's a chance for everyone who enters to win something.

I picked up the gladiator from two months ago and did some work on the helmet. I'm using the Scale75 metals (Necro Gold, Elven Gold, and Thrash Metal). I mix in Reaper's Imperial Purple into the Necro Gold for the darker tones, then gradually add the lighter metallic shades into that mix. The skin is still a work in progress. With so much skin on this big 75mm figure I got a little burnt out doing it. So it's nice to take a break and work on other sections for a while.
