Thanks! Yeah, some Celtic style tattoos are on my to-do list. I'm still trying to figure out the design(s) that I want to use. I haven't done tattoos before so I'm also trying to work out just how I want to go about it.

In regards to tattoos look into sprokets thread, he have something similar with his wings if I do remember correctly and a good description on how he does it.

Looks good! There were some tatoos that looked nice on the 5th dimmension blog facebook page i think... On Grunkful. he painted the tattoo really early and then kept working it backing into his skin as shaded the skin up. Came out very natural looking.

Seems like you shoul dbe fine though, just do what you did on the face ;)

wow thats looking awesome, got a little insite on those pics with your dark ones over light. great looking face, kinda reminds me of loino from thundercats :)

I left remarks concerning him on the Gokan thread but I'll just add here, again, that this is so damn artistic. That orange brown is a good choice. I plan on painting mine along the lines of Automaton. He has an excellent tutorial on skin tone painting here on CMoN, and this so happens to coincide perfectly with the skin tones I am choosing. Much like yourself, Automaton does an excellent job of explaining his techniques. The best in the biz, I'd say from a student perspective. Actually, you, him, and Sprocket have all taught me quite a bit from your tutorials. AndyG taught me a ton about NMM, though he doesn't do tutorials-I had to interrogate him and send him money :).

What is my point? I have no earthly idear.

Is that a politer way of saying 'has no life?' Well, between here, facebook, KS message boards, and paintings groups I hear about a lot of projects. Though BFK, you were the one that clued me into Bouchet's work. Speaking of new projects, this one popped up today
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ragnarok--3
It's an indiegogo campaign by Nocturna for 75mm figures based on Norse mythology. I'm really tempted by their Freya model. Unfortunately my hobby budget has been stretched pretty thin lately so I may have to pass on this.

Fluisterwoud, that lace is pretty tricky. The 75mm scale gives me a bit more room to work though. If you're using metallics, I suggest mixing in at least 50/50 matte paint for the darker tones to give you more control over the shadows. And don't worry if you go outside the lines. Those fine details are hard to do perfectly clean. I go back with the background color and touch things up when I'm done (and then back to the lace color if needed, and so on).

Pretty damn awesome, those Norsemen. Or Norse Gods, I should say. Man, I wish I was a faster painter. I am a 2.5 months per mini kind of guy. I suppose I could step it up. Too often I am just not thoughtful enough about my time. I need to condense things and become a mini per month kind of guy. That way I could fit in projects like this one.

Furthermore, I have to notify you about the Conan: Hyborean Age Kickstarter-to-be. It hasn't started yet, though you can go to FB to check them out. Some of the sculpts you'll see are meant to be part of larger units, so while they're still extremely awesome, they are cannon fodder. However, sculpts like the mummy and shaman are just stupid good. I dare say that this will be the biggest thing since Kingdom Death. Speaking of which, the KD sculptor is also in on this, as well as my personal favorite Stephan Simon. So if I have anything to point out to people and get excited about, it's this. I will definitely be backing it, big time....

Thanks! I took a look at Sprokets blog and the 5th Dimension gallery. Some very nice tattoo work.

Canny, ha, I would love to see someone paint this guy up in a full lion-o scheme. Not sure I quite follow your comment about dark ones over light though.

BFK, Automaton does fantastic work. His skin tutorial is really indepth, a great source for information. As for painting slowly, well I start things quickly but am slow to finish. I've got a lot of projects in the works but I've only put up 4 finished figures in my gallery this year. And thanks for the heads up about the Conan Kickstarter. Those are some really nice looking sculpts and a lot of great concept art.

I still plan to add some tattoos, but first I opted to do the tartan. Painting a tartan pattern is one of those things that seems really difficult and intimidating, but it's actually not nearly as hard as you'd expect. If you can paint stripes then you can paint a tartan. It's just a matter of breaking down the pattern and starting with the major stripes, then piece by piece adding in the other details one at a time. I put the full description in the tutorial on my painting blog, so take a look if you're interested.

Bailey before you go doing the "Ink" check carefully on Celtic Tattoos.
Modern versions which abound now may not be as close to the original workings and their mythological origins.
Celic tattoos often had a "Real" meaning to them and not we're not just decorations and their placement(s) were similarly as important.

You can learn a lot from the right sources, Kevin Hearne's "The Iron Druid" books give some pointers.

Ok, guys now is the time to go yeah that is nice work Mr Bailey...But soon I will start painting mine and that will be equally good or better. (at least I can stay in that mode until I start the figure and then reality will settle in)

Lovely work there,

Thanks, everyone. Hope you find the tutorial helpful!

Thanks for the tip, Dragonsreach. I hadn't thought to separate historical celtic tattoos from the more modern versions. Looks like I've got some research to do.

Incredible body of work... glad I finally caught up... you lot keep distracting me with all the extra links! Thanks for sharing so many of your techniques and perspectives on how you paint what you do. I have a long way to go, but finding stepping stones of progress makes me believe that in a few years time I can make steady progress and bring to vision what I can see in my mind. Sure makes me wish I had started doing this years (decades) ago!
You have a phenomenal teaching ability, especially with the cropped photos that show detailed progression and your willingness to take the time to set it up and actually explain not only what you did but what you were trying to create. I felt frustrated not really being able to comment as I worked through the WIP over the last few days (yes, days!). Currently I am enjoying the Gokan experiment and you say some of the technical things may be simple, adapting a straight line to curves is perhaps not as simple as you would lead us to believe. I also enjoy seeing the reference photos you link that spark your own inspiration and your adaptation of them.
Simply and honestly, thank you!

Thanks, Silverwulfe and welcome to the thread! I put in the extra work to show a lot of what I do and how I approach the projects, so I'm glad you found it helpful.

Another superb start to a model. I'm always in awe of your skin work. The tartan looks great as well, how frustrating was it to paint? I've wanted to paint a model that calls for a tartan for some time now but haven't had the chance yet. If you're still researching tattoo ideas, here's a bunch of Pictish designs that could be used.
