I love your historic work, so would say the Hussar. But that elf sculpt is very nice and painted like the Hellboy movie would really stand out. The Bonner inspired sculpt just seems too cartoony to me.

part of me think number three and another part thinks number 4, based on the elf you are painting now I can imagine that looking grand. but number three looks a great model but i cant imagine what you would do with it so hard to say really. shame you cant paint all of them and then pick ;)

the Brom figure, the mounted guy, the northumbrian and then the elf. They all need to be painted by you though.

Fantastic work sir.

I think your photo pretty much answers how these things need to get painted. The Cyanolith guy has to get done. The Hussar is pretty sweet though. The dragon prince is cool too I bet he would be a great focal point for a big scene with some dramatic lighting.

My vote official vote is to combine them all into some sort of Dali-esque diorama :)

I really want to see the gobo. I think it would be a great stretch project for you and fun for us all to watch some one of your skill level tackle something so far outside your wheelhouse of minis. I think we'll get to see how you deal with mistakes.challenges and for once we could offer advice on how to tackle something a little less realistic. DO THE GIANT GOBO. DO IT NOW.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone. Looks like the big Cyanolith piece has the most votes, followed by the elf. That's kind of how I'm leaning at this point, with the big guy in the lead followed by the elf. And yes, I definitely plan to paint them all eventually (nice to hear from you again, Milosh. I like your conversion on the winged girl, btw!).

Right now I think I'll start on the big ogre once I've finished at the Bay Area Open. I'm concerned about the size of the piece and how long it will take me... but if I can finish the ogre, then the goblin rider and dog are things I know I can handle in a reasonable amount of time. If it's not going well or taking too long, I can always put it on hold for the following year and jump to the elf instead. If I finish with enough time, maybe I'll do the elf too. I can enter Cyanolith into the diorama category, then bring the elf for large scale.

Well, not being able to paint for the last week has left me in a rush to finish Sorondil in time for the Bay Area Open this weekend. I've had to make some compromises, the main one is decided to leave off the dinosaur. I like the idea of having it, but it's not necessary. Hopefully once the competition is over, I can go back and add it in. In the meantime, I've been rushing to get the base into something that is passable. When we last saw it, I'd shown the basic construction and then how it looked with the black and grey priming.

From there I used an airbrush (poorly) to lay down some browns for the tree and dirt. Then I went in with a regular brush to fix my shoddy airbrushing. Questionable if that really saved me any time. Anyway, the base needed some plants for the primordial jungle vibe I wanted. I used some etched brass plants from Hasslefree minis. Here's a quick and blurry cell phone photo. I was testing the placement and wanted something so I could remember after I'd primed and base coated them.

I gave the plants a green base coat and tried to use the airbrush for some initial shading. The results unfortunately looked really flat, so they will need to be completely redone by hand. Oh well, I definitely need to set aside some time to do some basic airbrushing practice. I put in a few more plants and then added some moss to the tree. I took this technique from a MassiveVoodoo tutorial. It's fine turn mixed with matte varnish.

And now for the nicer non-cell phone photos. Here I've gone in and repainted a lot of the plants. I still need to finish up the ferns. I also used some washes/glazes to add some color variation and shading to the moss. So far just the lower half, the top of the tree is untouched.

He's almost there. But, over the next three evenings of painting I've got to finish the plants and moss, paint the bow and a few other details on the main figure, and then use pigments to weather the figure and base. I should be able to get it all done, but I'm going faster than I'd like and being a bit sloppy in places. It looks alright in the photos, but if you gave the base a close inspection there are plenty of spots that could use more work.

Watcha mate looking great the hasslefree is good stuff but for my money the Busch HO ferns and fungi. Excellent stuff more realistic and it has volume to it not flat brass worth a look mate.

It sucks to have to rush like that, but he really is looking incredible. I'll be extremely put out if we don't get to see that dino on there at some point, though :p
