Hi Bailey,

For brown eyes you can use burnt umber, or even burnt sienna as base colour and highlight by adding yellow ochre. it will not stand out as much as blue eyes, but as this gives a colour a bit more vibrant, it might help the visibility. My brother has brown eyes and this his eyes are what I use as inspiration. No, I didn't took them out of his head, I just look at his face :doh!::eyeroll!:

cheers,

Gino

I am disappointed DR. I would think a man of your experience would not have made the mistake of making that promise....
Well after buying 29 new pieces at Euro, getting hooked on a Kickstarter, having a "back order" turn up, two copies of Broken Toad's "Paradise Lost" arrive, buying an airbrush compressor and then finding a model shop on a Sketch Crawl in Derby (Galactica Games, very friendly) and grabbing two bargains yesterday, kinda thought it might be politically expedient.

Sorry, DR! But he's just a little dwarf, so the figure should be easy to hide behind that impressive list of stuff you've got (29 new pieces at euro! wow!).

MAXXxxx, thanks! Yes, I still do it like in my blog. Starting out by sketching in the shadows and then build up to the midtone using a variety of intermediate tones, then work up to the highlights by gradually adding in my of that shade to the midtone. The glazes are more to add tint and color variation to the face, although they help with the blends too (and glazes of the basic skin tone can be used to further smooth out the blends).

Thanks, Krule. I hope to see you there!

Gino, yeah, in the past I have used yellow to lighten the brown (like on the Rackham dwarf close up below). Of course you can only go so far before it stops looking like natural brown eyes and turns into fantasy yellow ones. But as you said, it helps but blues and greens will still pop more.

Hi Bailey,

Do you have a pic of the complete Rackham dwarf. I can't find it in your gallery and Rackham being my prefered brand I would love to see it. Don't tell me that is an eye on a 28mm fig? You must have superman eyes to get so much detail in the eyes of such a small subject.

greetz,

Gino(2dope)

Well, I haven't finished the dwarf so it's not up the gallery. Here's the latest version. Technically it's a 28mm figure, but the heads on those Rackham dwarfs are more like a 75mm or 90mm scale heads on 28mm scale bodies.

This is a bunch of crap Bailey...now you're painting in the tear ducts! Lol. :) Looking good.

Your right of course. The wife decided to move us in the basement and give the mother in law the upstairs...she went into the gameroom to start moving my stuff to make that little bears room. At that point she changed her mind and told me I had too many toys to move. I felt it was not a good time to tell her I backed another Kickstarter.

.... I have a hidden stash in the attic, where I stow away the stuff I know I won't be building or painting any time soon. If I stopped buying now, I'd have enough to paint for years still, but can I stop? Nah.

The faces are, as usual, amazing Bailey. Would love to make it over the pond and take your class, still, I can't really see myself painting anything that small ...

Thanks, everyone.

Well, after a week off, I've finally got back to the samurai figure. In order to attach the next few bits (his right arm and another piece of armor on his chest), I need to finish up his front. I've been looking at a lot of reference material online and in my books for design/pattern ideas. I settled on this option, a close variation of one I found on the web, for the panels in his armor. I briefly considered an alternative that had figures in it... but in the end decided it would be too hard to pull off at this scale and a geometric pattern would work better. I also laid down the green background for his arm. I'm not entirely happy with the shadows and highlights, so I will continue to tweak those. Once that's done, I've got to decide on another pattern and apply it there.

Stunning pattern... So regular! I have the impression it is real pattern... I agree with the sleeve, some folds have missed shadows.

Wow! That pattern is really great! I love the lavender color of it too. It's really resonating with the orange and purple. I do think you could push the 'lights and shadows a tiny bit more to make it look a little more shinny. I assume it supposed to be silk. On the green maybe you could shade it from front to back to give it more movement?

Pretty amazing stuff dude!

RReally amzing freehand work. David this is a check contender I don't care what else is there.plain and simple. If you want more shine Ide suggest using reaper msp satin finish.but I myself like everything as is maybe a light point here and there with a loaded brush tech.again if you feel so,as I think it's suggests a nice strong dynamic as it is.

Thanks, everyone. Demi, I pushed the highlights further on the smaller purple details. I might do some glazing to bring out the shadows more and help exaggerate the contrast. BAM, thanks, that would be awesome. Though at this point I'm just shooting for a top three finish in the category. There are some big names planning to be there (Ben Komets, Angel Giraldez, and I think Yellow one is coming back plus many more), so I'm taking nothing for granted.

I worked more on his chest armor, doing the sections over his shoulder and then onto his back. There was another section for the pattern on his back that I painted this morning. When his shoulder armor and the rest of his helmet is in place it will barely be visible, but you can still see it from certain angles so it had to be done. Now I'm going back to his arm. I think it looks better from behind, but the front is still too flat. It's got a decent range from light to dark, but the light is too confined to the top and the dark to the bottom so in the photos from the side you can't really see it. I'll keep playing with it and bring those lights and shadows more onto the side so the contrast really shows.
