For the samurai I obviously had to go with brown eyes but for a different ethnicity you may have a choice. When I have the option, I prefer to go with a lighter color like blue or green.

Well you could have gone blue and claimed that he had some Ainu blood in him. As someone who's not actually a historian my guess is that this would have actually gotten him discriminated against, but a convention judge just might have to accept your argument.:)

My two cents on the arm: i think it is the sculpt. He has deep rolling creases on top of the arm that you would expect to have very few especially when thrusting your arm out. Then you have done a good job of building deep shadows into those creases....except our brains don't want to see deep shadows there with an overhead sun. So I am thinking you need to lighten the shadows on top of the arm and go with (...ok sacrilege...) less contrast there.

Its a bit more than terrific in my opinion, this is over the top insane Bailey, but I came to terms with you not being human and all quite some time ago.

Again I've been looking at this piece the whole night.I cannot tell you how perfect this job is thus far.this is your most perfectly precise painted model...this is what competetive miniature painting is all about.textbook perfection.additionally Im not seeing any imperfection in the shades and highlights anywhere on the models.it's perfectly painted and will Def be up for the top 3 spots of overall contention period.

Thanks, all! Well, you want each piece to be bigger and better than the last. At 90mm I know I've at least got bigger covered. =) I'm really happy with the start on this figure, so now I'm just trying to keep every new part up to the same level.

I wasn't planning to do a step by step, but I did take a few shots of the chest pattern while I was doing it (mostly so I remember later when I have to redo it on a few more sections). Anyway, here's a look at how it came together. I started with just dots where the main lines cross and where the red circles will be. Then I laid down the main lines, thin at first and then thicker (trying to keep them uniform). The rectangular and square sections were made by going back with the background color and painting perpendicular lines to split up the original one. That's where the first picture comes in. The process was the same for the rest, start with full lines and then use the off white to split them up. By the way, there were plenty of mistakes made along the way. But you go back over it with the background color (or design color) to clean it up and redo whatever is needed.

Oh geez. I don't even know what to say anymore. This is just so many levels above the rest of us that it's scary now.

Well, don't forget this is a 90mm figure. I wouldn't have a chance to do something like this on a 54mm and definitely not on a 28mm.

I redid the sleeve last night. This is actually the third version (stupid green!), but I think I'm finally happy with it. Now I can move on to covering it up with another design! As a reminder, here is how the sleeve looked the other day...

And here's how it is now. I took a couple quick snaps with the cell phone camera (no light box setup or anything), so not perfect pictures but they look good enough.

New sleeve looks way better. I still can't get over how your the pattern works with that lavender color and purple piping. Orange dragon design for the sleeve a la the Sumathay banner?

Thanks!

I was initially thinking something like this:

Or this guy's right sleeve, which is pretty similar

But then I got to thinking that the diagonal lines and circles combination was too close to the pattern on his chest. While it might be nice for the patterns to have some similarities, I still want then to be distinct from one another. I found this example online the other day and I think it might work better.

By the way, I'm going geometric for the chest and green sleeve, but I plan to make the orange cloth (which covers his right arm and both legs) some sort of representative design. I haven't seen any examples involving dragons (I think that would look too modern or like fantasy), but plenty involving flowers and a few with birds.

And yeah, technically the new design is still circles and lines, but the lines are much more web-like than the chest and the circles will be filled with multi-colored images. I'm also open to other ideas and suggestions. If anyone finds some neat examples online, let me know. I've been looking at figures, people in costume, art/wood block prints, etc. I've been collecting a folder full of images. While I have a general idea of what I want to do, as I mentioned at the end of the last post, nothing is set in stone. I might find something I like better for the arm. And there's still plenty of time for me to change my mind on the rest of his clothing.

I love the pattern you went for on the white part. I, too, think the last example would be best on the sleeves. I can't wait to see this guy finished, it's going to be epic.
