Thanks, Canny and Darthmarsh.

Darthmarsh, I think I mentioned it a while back, though it's easy to lose those details in the thread. The samurai is 90mm. I think I already shared this, but here's a photo I took before beginning of the samurai next to my last 54mm project.

These days I use two different base coats : a lighter for the highlight area's and a darker for the shadows. The mid area's first highlight is then a part of the shadow where I use the highlight base for the first highlight and part of the highlight area where the shadow base is used for the first shadow and thus creating a midtone; From there on I start highlighting/shading each part accordingly. i hope it makes some sense; it's much easier to do then to write about it.

cheers,

Whoa, i didn't realize how much kit this dude has! Since you are painting him in stages are you going to make his gear removable? On the box art you can barely see his face, which I think would be shame. Maybe you could display him with an armor stand? Sorry I missed the google hang-out I would love love love to get a regular one going.

Unfortunately I think all of the equipment has got to stay on the figure. About half of the helmet is sculpted on, so not much I can do about that. And since he's in a battle pose, leaving parts of his armor off would be odd. I'm planning to angle him up a bit (the box art has the arm and face angled slightly down), so I think that should help. Other than that, I'm hopeful that sticking with a smaller set of colors for his armor/equipment will help visually. Hard to tell whether or not it's working until I get farther along though!

On a completely unrelated note, I just saw this upcoming 75mm figure from Nuts Planet called 'Clever Hunter.'

The kits got a couple different options included two heads, two left arms, and optional gear. From what I've seen, the uncovered head sculpt is just so so, but I personally like the gas mask version. There's just something creepy about those. And for some strange reason I'm drawn to the lantern version. Not really sure why...

I've yet to do a post-apocalyptic figure, but I'd like to. And, having done a piece with OSL as the primary light source, I'm less nervous about trying it again. In the year and a half since I painted Olfo I think I've learned a lot, so I'd actually be interested to do a similar piece and see how it compares. Plus I think that piece has plenty of opportunities for creating a compelling narrative with the scene. I could go with a nuclear winter post-apocalyptic scene, sort of Fall Out inspired. Or perhaps a zombie themed post-apocalyptic scene. There are several 75mm scale zombie figures (one from Knight Models and a couple from Dark World Creations come to mind).

Of course, first I've got to finish that damn samurai! Well, it's still fun to think about future projects. This one is awfully tempting

Samurai ongoing work look fantastic. Amazing clean, delicate and precise work with color patterns on armor and sleeve. Breathtaking indeed. Keep it up. Btw, 'Clever hunter' looks really good.

The gas mask will keep you from doing your amazing faces, of course, but still, I think that would be a very good project.

you should really do a pic with a 6mm (epic), a 28mm (bog standard 40k or similar), a 54mm (the viking), a 90mm (the samurai) and a 200mm figure on it :) (of course all painted by you)

as for nutsplanet. I begin to suspect they are really evil and are after my money. They have a LOT of releases that I like and 'have to' buy. I simply can't paint fast enough to keep up with their releases that I like (not to mention other companies)

Thanks, BAM and Ark!

Thanks, Oistene. I do like painting faces... though the normal head on this one is pretty dull in my opinion. You can see more here http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/trigger-s-apocalyptic-release-of-december-clever-hunter.74960/ The face is pretty plain, especially for a figure in this scale.

MAXXxxx, ha, I could probably get pretty close with what I've already got. I don't have any epic (painted or unpainted), but I've got 28, 54, 75, and 90mm figures plus a 200mm bust all painted. Unfortunately the completed bust is about 3 years old and really not up to the standard of my more recent stuff. I've got the work in progress Hussar bust (he's a bit closer to 150mm)... maybe when I finish that and the samurai I'll get them all together for a group photo.

In other mini-related news, a box of figures from the Black Sailors kickstarter arrived on my doorstep last night. I can't tell you how excited I am to get these. The sculpts and casts are absolutely beautiful. If you want to try some slightly larger scale fantasy figures, these are well worth checking out. The kickstarter is currently shipping all the figures, so I would expect them to be available for retail in the very near future. My favorite piece from the set is the big bomba, an ogre with a bunch of goblins on him. I expected him to be a bit bigger... but that's not a bad thing. The ogre is pretty close to a 75mm scale regular human and the goblins are around 35mm (smaller than I thought), so the project actually feels more manageable than I first thought. I guess I imagined the goblins would be closer to 54mm which would make the ogre 120mm and thus the whole thing would be a much bigger time commitment. The actual size feels like something that would be closer to two months worth of work rather than 3-4. I'm really excited to get started on these figures, so there is some more motivation to finish the samurai...

Yay for new minis!

And on a selfish note I am also really excited by their arrival - it means that I have lots of awesome Bailey painting to look forward to. :)

I agree with you that nutsplanet new release is looking really good.

/K

I agree, that hunter is a very cool mini. I am beginning to think that instead of buying more crappy minis, I should just send Bailey a monthly stipend and he could send me a random cool mini for me to try painting! ;)

I do understand what you mean about that face, it is kind of flat. And gas masks are cool. Makes me want to take out some of the minis from SMOG... hm, maybe later.

I needed a break from the samurai, so I decided to start on Barbarela from M Proyec. He's still in the very very early stages. I've done the basic highlights/shadows on the face but none of the glazes. I'm waiting on that until after I finish all the hair. I've been doing the coat in sections. I haven't done much with the bottom, but the rest has shadows finished just no highlights. Other sections are base coated and the stripes on the pants are just sketched in.

For the face I wanted to push the skin towards a slightly more unnatural look. It's a mix of Rosy Skin with Dark Elf Skin and then Fair Skin with Vampiric Shadows. The highlights are Vampiric Skin and the shadows have Burgundy Wine mixed in to them. The result is a skin that's more grey and pale than my regular mix plus a purple tint to the shadows instead of the more healthy red. It feels half finished without the glazes, but I'll get there soon.

A great start. It's a beautiful figure and we're curious to see the result. Btw - I mean, you jump from model to model how artiste :). It's challenging, changing the focus to different pieces? or is it really more rest? When I leave something, even for a moment, hard to return to it, because I often fully deliver another thing: D.

Ha, well that's one way to put it. You could also say that I have an attention span as short as my figures! If I'm making steady progress on a piece, I tend to work on just that one. But, if I get stuck or progress slows to a crawl, then I find it helpful to work on something else for a little while. This whole thing works best if I've got 2 or 3 pieces. More than that and it's unlikely I'd get back to the original work. It also helps to have deadlines. The samurai is for Crystal Brush, so I know I've got to get back to it soon. Basically it's a way for me to keep painting and having fun. Occasionally I'll leave a piece and never get back to it... but most of the time, there's a reason I started a piece (ie I really liked it!), so that will get me to come back sooner or later.
