Thanks, Persifal. BAM, I won't forget. If I get one of the checks, drinks are on me!

I finished the circles on his sleeve design and moved on to the lines. Unfortunately I'm not quite happy with how that part is going and I could use some advice. I started on the back, but I don't know... maybe they were just too thick. So I switched to the front, changed up the color mix slightly, and went for thinner lines. I think this is better, but I'm still not sure if it's right. What do you all think? Should I stick with it or try a different color? I thought perhaps the black from the chest design. Purple is another option, those since that's for the other edging, strap and cord details, I worry using it for the line work would be the wrong choice. Oh, and keep in mind there will be more lines as well as designs within the white circles. The plates on the back of his arm will be black with gold edges/details.

Aside from the design work, I also redid the highlights on the rest of the purple sections.

Couple thoughts... right now the line color on the front is a 50/50 mix of yellow and the orange on his main clothing. I could ditch the yellow and just go orange. Or, what about mix the yellow 50/50 with the green of the sleeve? I think that would make it seem like they go together better.

There's also black, as I mentioned before. Or what about white for the lines just like the circles? I'd give the circles a dark border so they'd still be separate.

The thinner lines on the front look better imho - more like threading than the back. I like the colour mix with the yellow:eek:range for the thin lines.

Hope that helps.

Thinner lines, but the darker yellow like the back of the arm. IMHO i think the white circles are the problem at the moment as it overwellms a bit with the white front piece and pops out too much from the dark green sleeve.

The thinner lines look better indeed. No matter if they get a bit 'lost', with detail like that, it's meant more to convey the total image of the little details combined rather than emphasiszing each element individually. Ifthismakesanysenseatall.

It's looking fantastic. You're doing an incredible job of creating intricately detailed surfaces without losing the coherence of the whole. Thanks for documenting your method for tackling such inspiring freehands.
I agree with the others who have suggested returning to the darker orange. Right now the sleeve is pulling attention away from the face and chest, but the darker orange helps the eye find the focus of the piece.
I look forward to more updates on this awesome work.

I'm with the thinner lines version too (nightmare of a thin lines oO' )
If I had to choose between the yellow and the orange I would chose the orange, but I would go for a little bit more desaturated orange... What about choosing one of the skin tones? on the highest light areas you could go for that orangey look to link them to the other clothes... and maybe that gives a a silk+golden thread sewn aspect to the piece.
Not sure if I am explaining well ^^'
It could also happen that when you drew the insides of the circles the yellowy/orangey lines maybe loose their punch a bit...

SSee I like the thicker orange line don't forget people this is a bit larger than your all thinking I believe and to make makes it more visually striking.if so think like this thickey lines doesn't mean they are thick and ugly they str8 perfect and to me the proper size.if you can't decide then make em somewhere in btween.but to me this way I can see them near and far.to me that passes the test.;)
Iow the white circles or anything else for that matter is perfectly proportioned-"NOT OVERWHELMED"-so to speak.I really love it
AND TO BRING Atention tO THE PIECE and declare it takes away FOCAL POINT ON THE CHEST ,well---LOOK IN JEREMY BOOK a model CAN HAVE MULTIPLE FOCAL POINTS- FACE -TO ARMOR-TO EMbroidery ON A CLOAK-TO A POWer SWORD BACK TO THE FACE. Sorry to tell you folks but a model such as this is as such.
Face is the focal point and then the eye wonderfully is caught moving about the very neat and wonderfully precise motifes on and about the models ensamble!

I think also the orange is what to go far as kinda shapes that spot color across the model including the hangerkerchief.if you really get a feel to change it -the half the size of the thickness, as the skinny lines get lost ,the orange color obviously shaded where light is not present under the arms and that should do it.but again this kinda model like most asian battle oriented is Def the whole thing no one focal point it's just not realistic to think such .
And rely on your near far test..the basics are always sufficient ,because they're never wrong bud.go git em.

I get what you're saying BAM - my reasons for liking the thinner lines is because they resemble a thread pattern more than the thicker ones. And to me that's what this pattern is - threads in silk.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Sometimes you're just too close to your project, so it's nice to get some outside opinions. Sounds like advice is stick with the orange color and use the thinner lines. I may go a little inbetween with the line thickness. My concern with going too thick is I wanted to add another two diagonal lines between each of the existing ones and the thick lines might cover up too much. The circles will stand out less in the end, I'm going to have more designs inside them, so it won't just be pure white. I'm going to mix up a few sample colors to see what I like best. I'll start with the orange and add in a bit of the green to see if that helps it fit in with the background better. Equal parts would create brown, so it's more 2 or 3 parts orange to 1 part green. I'm also interested to try mixing the yellow with the green. I'll play around a bit on the palette and see how it looks.

As for focus, I'll say it's going to be tough with a samurai to have a single clear point of focus. Here's a pic of the box art, as you can see there's a lot going on. I'd like to exert some control over the areas of focus, but I've got to work with the sculpt.

I wanted the sleeve to be a more complex design than the rest of the cloth. A large part of this style of figure is to have fun with freehand designs (and maybe show off a bit =P ).

Wow he really is a busy model! But I have faith that you can focus the eye where you'd like it to go.

We're very happy with your showing off so keep at it. :D

Works for me so your crazy your telling me theit are more shapes going in .OMG honestly bails what I love about high level artists you guys when you don't like something you already know what you want to fix and remedy it.truthfully I do it the same way I'll put some thoughts out there a d see how many yay or nays I get and majority rules.just another thought that this is why folks there is no right or wrong way but more evidance to show mini painting is subjective.odds have it lol we go with the skinnys (black hawk down ref) lol I still feel when it's all done it's going to turn out to be a check winner.this thing is a monstrosity of brilliant technique regarding every facet of miniature painting.I love this model..if it went on sale Ide easily pay $1000.00 as a start up price...a machine cannot do anything even close to being more effective than your superhuman hands and what they've woven.awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwesom3. Pheew!

Totally incredible freehand! My thought is to leave the shirt as it is so it doesn't distract from the awesome freehand patterns! Very cool mini!

I had a little bit of time to paint this weekend, so I continued to develop the arm design. I think the design is coming into focus. I did the lines on the front side using the same orange as the shirt. I then put in white diamonds where the lines crossed, which I think provided a nice balance to the larger white circles. I also started to do some of the designs within the circles. These will be alternating between two different designs.

EVery thing is right on point, target and nail hit on the head....this piece proves what I said all along and I'll stand by it......you are as good as any 9f the big name artists that do this for a living...the only diff is your a hobbyist and they are making a living through it....and REM I'm the one who said it's prob gonna be top spot..when people asked me last year what your top three I said in no order the andy Craig marine,Jessica kingdom death and Bens pirate....sho enough BAM was right....now your supposed to beat in theory the models that were winners the year before.....so here's what I'm saying you just pounced "Yourself" into the dirt ....so if last year you received a gold this year it's something more....and honestly I feel this was a tie with Ben and Def way way way above what Jessica rich did.....the thing is it wins because everybody is always amazed by freehand.....leaving me to deduce if this is the greatest I and many have seen....well then.....do thy math....very well dave...really a home run thus far.
