Bailey03's WIP

Thanks for the description Bailey. I too have the entire SW line of pigments, so your description is doubly useful to me. You definitely pulled off arid. Reminds me of my time in Kandahar Province, AFG.

Dont be scared! Dirty that horse up!!

Also I know quite a few wood recipes/techniques if you ever need some inspiration in the future. For instance, using natural wood from VMC to create a more synthetic, modern two by four look. Or recently messed around with adding white to GW Rhinox Hide. It turns a more violet color (see SkelletettS' door, page 1 of his WIP) and works well for fantasy settings. And then there are the inks for Scalecolour that are great for wood.

Thanks, Coyotebreaks. BFK, yeah, I may pick your brain next time I've got to paint wood texture for a project. And I think Scale75 did a whole set of paints for wood.

I'm still open to any suggestions on the two Crystal Brush projects, but in the meantime I thought I'd share a some figures that arrived today. A few months ago I backed the Figopedia Indiegogo project. I'm still waiting on the book, but the part of the shipment with the two Indiegogo figures arrived today (so hopefully the book isn't far behind). They also gave us the option to add any of the figures from Figone to our order, so I picked up a copy of Alphonse Danlta too. That's the first figure below and definitely one that fits my style well. He's 54mm and has all sorts of space for freehand designs. He's got two shields, a big one on his back and a small one in front, plus two banners hanging from his back. The cape and cloth hanging from his belt are a few more places where I could add some design work. His armor is really nice, lots of dents and scratches for character. There are a couple pieces that will need to be straightened but it doesn't look too bad.

The next two figures are both 32mm that, I believe, are exclusives for the indiegogo project. They are the Queen of Death and the Queen of Barbary. Both are beautiful sculpts, though I really like the Queen of Barbary. She's got a huge demon head hanging from her sword and that's going to be a lot of fun to paint next to the tiny female figure. I'd love to have this one in a 54mm version, but that wasn't an option so I'll have to give the 32mm version a try.

I expected the book and figures to all ship together. I'm not sure why it wasn't in the same package... I suppose it could be a screw up, but seems odd that they'd forget to send the book seeing as that's the one thing everyone gets. Hopefully it was sent in two packages and the book will be here in the next day or two. If it's not here by next week then I'll contact Jeremie and David to see what's going on.

Huh, I pledged for it but I am not sure I ever paid... As far as kickstarters go this one seemed a little confused. The figures look cool though!

I'm guessing you paid, Demi. This was an indiegogo with works a little differently from Kickstarter. They charge you when you pledge, then if the goal isn't met they refund your money. Kickstarters don't charge anything until after the campaign has succeeded. At least that is how it's worked in my experience.

Thanks, Epic.

Well, part two of the Figopedia packages arrived today and I now have to book in my hands. It looks great, though it's going to take some time to dig through all the material in there.

With the Saxon and Knight all wrapped up, it was time to finish off my 4th piece for the Crystal Brush. This is the Arthur figure from Figone that I painted back in December. I wanted to build a base that fit with the whole sword in the stone setting, so of course I needed the iconic stone and anvil. Maybe not the toughest things to build, but given my non-existent sculpting skills it took me some time. To create the anvil I used several blocks of balsa wood and then covered it with milliput to fill it in and create the rounded edges. I wanted to do a little more with the scene, so I placed a banner next to the stone. I tried a couple different ways to create the banner before finally making one out of a brass sheet. I could cut it, but it was also stiff enough to hold the minor waves I bent into it.

I went with a red/white color scheme for the banner. This matched two of the main colors from the figure. Also it tied into some of the Merlin story which included a red and white dragon representing England and Wales. And that's why the images on the banner are of a red and white dragon along with a sword dividing the two. I intentionally kept the designs as silhouettes. I was worried too much detail would distract the focus away from the figure.

I thought about just keeping the rear of the banner a blank white and red, but that was a little boring. And, I'm pretty sure at the Crystal Brush competition they will include at least one image from the back of the figure. So I put in an image of the sword in the stone/anvil and next to that I included the main quote about the sword/stone from the story.

Whoso Painteth the Badassnesseth shall be crowned King of the Thumbpainters, Lord of the Fanboys and Prince of the Schaumburg Renaissance Inn!

Great work! Love the back of the banner. Arthur's sheild is really incredible too. I think you could muck it up a bit more with pigments if you like. It is supposed to be the dark ages right?

What's next???

Thanks, Epic and Demi.

I'm not sure what's next, but I'm excited for some new projects! First I do have a couple old things to wrap up, I need a base for the Dark Elf so I can submit him into the CMON contest. I've also get a 75mm Napoleonic Aide-de-Camp that's partway finished. But new figures... I dunno. The Alphonse figure from Figone (that I posted near the top of this page) looks like fun. I also recently got a 70mm Celt holding a Roman's decapitated head, he'd be fun too. And I have two steampunk ladies from Scale75 which will hopefully be here sometime in the next week or two. So there are some good options for my post-CB projects.

Thanks, moetle!

MAXXxxx, I'm getting Amelia Steam and Kitty Reimer. I want to go with more of a dark gothic steampunk look for Kitty, maybe do some minor conversion work too. I've got some ideas but until I actually get the figure it's hard to know what I can and can't do. On a side note, I really like their newest one, Jessica Thunderhawk. But I got my two through their last Indiegogo campaign and she wasn't out yet.

The Arthur piece is beautifully done. And the banner is a nice touch, it's simple yet elegant, so it looks great but doesn't take the eye away from the mini.
