Good luck in the contest! I just ordered Jessica Thunderhawk a few days ago, such a beautiful steampunk model. I look forward to seeing your take on her :)

Thanks! I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do with her. I was poking around the cgtalk forum looking for good reference and inspiration and came across this
http://karambola.cgsociety.org/art/lady-mechanika-comicon-challenge-2014-steampunk-2d-1186209
Looks like the art that Jessica Thunderhawk was based on (the studio paint scheme too). I'm tempted to make a few minor conversions to the figure to bring it more inline with the art (like the extra lenses on the goggles, extra details on the bird, etc) if I can pull it off. Unfortunately since the studio color scheme matches the art it doesn't really give me any new directions to go with the painting. I'm getting a steampunk vulture through the 3rd Steam Wars Indiegogo (bought two other steampunk ladies with that) and it would fit the avian theme of this figure. But how to create a scene that would use it... I'm not sure. So I've got some partial ideas but nothing more than that.

we could in theory do a paint-along with Miss Thunderhawk. :)

I'm up for that. Who else has or is getting the figure? Sionid, you got a copy at Adepticon too, didn't you?

We could make it a Jessica Thunderhawk (or any steampunk figure you've got) paint along so more people can join in.

It's a scale 75 figure, not Figone.

If it were a general Steam Punk theme, I'd get in on it. I really admire the figure in question, just don't think I'll ever purchase it. Is it a 54mm?

Figone may carry it though, they sell figures from a lot of companies along with their own stuff. If you're ordering from the US, I'd check with Red Lancers first. They carry a lot of stuff (just not gaming figures) and since they're based in the US shipping is usually just a few days.

Its 75mm

I would like to do this, but im' not sure how fast figone ships to Il, in the states
as for figone shipping: last time he shipped every 2 weeks. then it's about 4 weeks on average to get something from the eu to the us.

wouldn't worry about that that much, it was just an idea, doesn't have to be followed. Worst case (if he decides to wait for us) we'd keep Bailey from painting it. :)
I know that the next 2 weeks I'll have very little chance to start with it. Besider reallife(tm) there is the tank I'm painting atm (altough it looks like I'll paint parts of it from time to time, so not finish it right away) and easter and the week after I may have time to paint another figure (that I can take with me on a plane), so it looks slim for me to start before end or april/beginning of may.

Yeah I know, but I ordered it from Figone, plus a few other cool mini's that he has.

I don't want to hold you up Bailey, I'll catch up eventually :)

Ha, well it's unlikely I'll be starting in the next two weeks either. I might be able to manage is some basic prep and assembly, but that's it. In the meantime, I have been learning a lot more about the character the figure is meant to be. The artwork that Jessica Thunderhawk is based on (link above) was meant to be Lady Mechanika, the main character in a series of steampunk comics. Obviously you can paint her up however you want, but I like the idea of sticking with the source material. Maybe not the exact colors, but I plan to draw a lot of inspiration from the comic's art and stay true to the Lady Mechanika look.

It's looking more and more like we'll be starting up a paint-along. Does anyone object to doing a more general 'steampunk' paint-along. If you've got the Jessica Thunderhawk figure that would be ideal, but allowing any steampunk project would make it much more inclusive.

Huh, I used to read Lady Mechanika! Gonna give her the spooky eyes?

I'd be 100% down with a paint-along, Thunderhawk-specific or just general steampunk.

Just a quick reminder, voting is now open in the CMON Shades of Grey Contest. I know a lot of people voted on the figures already, but (if I'm reading the rules correctly), only the votes cast this week count. So please vote again! There are a bunch of the forum regulars with entries (myself, MAXXxxx, Demihuman, Zab, fluisterwoud, Khonner) and some other really neat work too.

--------------

Trystan, it's a great looking kit. Definitely worth picking up. You can put Nagash on hold and work on Jessica instead. =)

Sionid, yup, I think so. I'd like to stay as close to the character as possible... though if it looks too weird I may tweak things a bit.

It's official, I just posted a thread for the paint-along. Moetle, MAXXxxx, Sionid, BFK, and maybe Trystan too - I hope to see you all joining in. Any steampunk figure will do, although if you have the Scale75 one that would be ideal! And anyone else interested, check it out. It'd be great to have a nice big group

As much as I'd love to, I owe Nagash's owner the courtesy of finishing him first. I've had his necromancer for far too long. :bulgy-eyes:

We'll see.

Just put up my Officer of the Guide in the gallery (still waiting approval) and over on P&P. It's the third of my pieces from the Crystal Brush. The only entry left is the young King Arthur... although I think I may redo some of the banner before I add it to the galleries. Anyway, here are the links to the Napoleonic figure:

In other news, I think someone is trolling my knight in the gallery. I noticed the score had dropped a few points, but that happens. However at night, when CMON gets rid of the 1's it goes back up. The next morning, after just a few new votes, it's back down again. This whole thing has been repeating for the last three days. The math says someone has to be giving it 3 or 4 1's in a row. It doesn't really matter, after all CMON factors out the sniping. It's just odd that someone has made it their morning routine to snipe that piece. I guess you can't please everyone!

It just makes no sense at all why people do that, damned infuriating. A quality job should always be recognised by another artist, not insulted.
The other thing that gets me is the amount of times people view your work and don't vote. I am struggling like hell to hit 50 votes on several pieces, just so I can start bumping myself up the charts.

I hear ya, on both points. If you don't like my work, that's fine. But vote what you think it should be (7, 8, 9, whatever). A 1 is essentially an unpainted mini. In the end, CMON seems to factor those votes out once you hit a certain threshold (probably the same 50 votes for scoring), so this person is just wasting their time. What struck me is that they appear to be coming back day after day.

The 50 vote threshold for counting towards your rank is a little on the high side, in my opinion. My pieces often hang around 20-40 votes. Most of the time it's only if the score gets them in the 'Top Last 7 Days' list that they get above that 50 vote number. I wish they could lower it to 30 or 40, that it enough to get a fair score. This isn't the first time that idea has been brought up. But I guess it's not a simple change and would require rewriting a lot of the website's code.

I was getting that on my contest entry lately were one day I have like 56 votes and then it's down to 54. I have the scores turned off so I'm not sure how it's fluctuating but that explains why the votes were going down. I guess the snipers were getting pulled by CMoN. It the one thing I like about WAMP and P&P. No account? No vote. That said I guess even members could snipe you, but i assume they could track that easier than just guest votes and maybe even ban members who are dicks to others with their votes.

Does anyone know how the "registered" votes tally? I know sometimes when i vote it doesn't always add to the registered vote count (and yes i am always logged in as a premium member).
