No one's a bigger fan than me DP. That has got to count for somethin'. Like a Kingdom Death pledge or SoMeThInG!!!!
Hehehe.

My personal goals for 2015 is to enter a legitimate, major contest of some kind. To win an online competition by placing in the top three in any category. To average 8.5 in the gallery, and pull of at least one 9.2. Get at least 3 projects to medal on P&P. Start work on a diorama of epic proportions. Sculpt a 54mm figure.

What are your goals, my friend? So we can look back next Spring and see what happened...You are already crushing the competitive mini painting scene.

BTW-Before I forget. You broke CMoN last year with your Hobbit Scene. It's no secret that it was everything we love about this hobby, but what particularly drew the crowds was your seamless OSL. Do you have a tutorial of this some where's?

BoK - I concur, about time I entered an online comp. I also want my average up, my best painting is 8.2. To hit P&P would be a dream.
if you haven't yet then check Baileys blog for his future projects.

Hmmm... good question, and good goals! There are plenty of online contests. It's great to see CMON doing a bunch. They're already on their third of 2015. After only one in 2014 and none in 2013, that's a nice change! Also keep an eye on the contests over at WAMP. They're a bit quieter than they used to be, but there are still some good opportunities. For the rest, well, just keep painting! =)

My goals... I haven't given it a lot of thought. For the past year I've been focused on placing at the Crystal Brush. I've done well at more local competitions (Bay Area Open, NOVA Open), but this was my first in-person national (or perhaps even international since a few Europeans did show up) competition. It was great to win gold in two of the historical categories. Of course, at a show like that the historical categories have traditionally not been as competitive as the other ones. Personally I think this year was a bit different. Second place in historical single and vehicle/mounted went to Tom Ales, who won sci-fi vehicles and placed 4th overall. And my knight was 7th overall. But still, I'd love to place in the top three in one of the fantasy, sci-fi, or general categories (diorama or large scale) next year. I've also got the goal of finishing in the top three overall... but that's more of a long term goal rather than something I think will happen in the next year. Next time around I'll come up with a more competitive large scale entry. There's lots of possibilities, maybe one of the scale75 pieces or any number of historicals. I have a couple in my collection that could be real contenders... lots of freehand, OSL possibilities. And then there are the figures from the Black Sailors kickstarter which will hopefully arrive this summer. I'm also waiting on a figure from the creature caster kickstarter, so maybe I'll enter the fantasy vehicle/monster category with that.

Other goals... well, getting into the CMON top ten of 2015 would be awesome, but will take a pretty special project to pull off. I wish they still did Golden Demon in the US because that would be a good goal. Sadly I can't justify flying to England for that, at least not right now. I'd like to do well in some more big online competitions. I've got an entry over at Massive Voodoo which could potentially finish in the top three. And I was talking with another painter about doing a class sometime, so I could add that to the goals: do a painting seminar.

In terms of general painting, I'd like to keep pushing my contrast, work in more color variation, use color more effectively (warm/cool contrast, forced focus, etc), and create more narrative basing/scenes. So yeah, all that should keep me busy.

Unfortunately I didn't do a tutorial on the hobbit piece. If I'd know is was going to turn out so well I would have taken more pictures while I was painting! But the OSL on that piece came down to these things...
1) The OSL was a single light source, so I just used what we all do with zenithal lighting but shifted the direction.
2) I definitely pushed the light/dark contrast more than I usually do. Many parts went from near pure white highlights to pure black shadows.
3) Varied the intensity of the highlights to create the illusion of fall off. The closer an object was to the light source, the brighter the highlights. Further away, the more subdued they were. Do your best to be consistent. But, also take into account how reflective a material might be. Shiny leather or metal that's further away will reflect more light than dull materials like cloth.

The Golden Vincis 2015 is going on right now and ends in a week or 2 if you have any new models that may fit their categories. http://dievincis.blogspot.com/2015/01/golden-vinci-2015_11.html

Bailey, I'd love to see you do a European comp tour, haha. Euromilitaire, Monte San Savino, Hussar, Scale Model Challenge, Golden Demons (though I think the last two were the same weekend last year).

I think we should have a 2015 goal thread where we can state and track all our goals for the year.

A goal thread could be fun. I know that for myself, having goals definitely helps me to focus better on what I'm doing and I try the set up both easier and harder ones but not impossible.

Thanks for the heads up, fluister!

A quick reminder to everyone who's been following my CMON thread but hasn't checked out my painting blog, I'm doing a figure giveaway contest over on my painting blog and the deadline to enter is just two days away! All you have to do is either be a follower of the blog or leave a comment on the contest post
http://powellminipainting.blogspot.com/2015/04/figure-giveaway-contest.html
The winner will get their choice between my Once and Future King figure or a pick from a selection of unpainted kits.

I've been really happy with the response to the contest over on my blog, so I decided to add a 2nd place winner too. The 1st place person will get their pick, then the 2nd place can choose from what is left.

In other news, I've finally started to assemble my Jessica Thunderhawk figure and hopefully this weekend I'll get to actually start painting her. Life has been pretty crazy these past few weeks, so I'm really looking forward to getting some more painting time.

to enter a competition is pretty easy eh? especially an online one! its winning something where the hard part begun :D

Euromilitaire, Monte San Savino, Hussar, Scale Model Challenge, Golden Demons (though I think the last two were the same weekend last year).

euromilitaire, ukgd, scale model challenge and hussar was all within two weeks last year so its going to be pretty hard to enter all these competitions me thinks hehe.

bailey, if you want a really competiteve historical show, euromilitaire is the one for you!

Agreed , got to be one of the highest standard competitions in the world. To get a gold the mini has to be of the highest possible standard unless you pay the judges off like a certain astronaut did , he he.

Yeah, I'd love to get to euromilitaire and I'm sure I will one of these days... though it may be a few years off. In the meantime, I've got plans to attend the World Expo when it comes to the US in two years.

So what do you think will be tougher, winning gold at euro or convincing my wife that we should plan our European vacation based around a miniature show?

Digga - no worries, if you couldn't get the comment to work I'll still add you to the entry list.

If logistics weren't a concern, I think I want to go to Monte San Savino more than any other. I like many of the artists that attend. Quality is always very high, not to mention to quaint setting.

If your wife is anything like mine, Dave, you have a better chance of winning Best of Show at every major miniature competition on the globe for a decade in a row. The trick, then, is making it appear purely coincidental. But then you have to answer as to why you are packing just a few socks and underpants to make room for that Mounted Templar.

He's right Bailey. Euro is were its at historical wise from the pictures ive seen at other shows then id have to say that Euro is in a league of its own. It's natural lighting. The voting is all night long and each category has a dedicated team of judges. Each judge has to have got a gold themselves before they can be invited to judge. There is quite literally hundreds of entrants from all over the globe and the top professional painters regularly attend. Also the awarding of medals for quality rather than a knock out 1 bronze 1 silver 1 gold means that if there's four or five gold level in a category then that's what's awarded however sometimes if there isn't gold standard then nothing is awarded so it really is about the best quality.

I find with with the wife issue that months and months of grovelling and regular flowers and romantic dinners and even more begging for even more months works............sometimes ;)

Ha, very true. Grovelling and begging are always good strategies.

BFK, of all the European shows, I've probably got the best chance of convincing my wife to go with me to the Monte San Savino show. I think she could live with just about any excuse that lead to another trip to Italy.
