Thanks for all of the ideas. Right now I'm leaning more towards a wood look. Bone or horn are interesting choices... though I'm not sure that would be believable for a bow (of course it's fantasy so maybe that's irrelevant). I'm wrapping up the rest of the details on the body, aside from the bow, then I think I will attach his other arm with the spear. Once that is in place and base coated, I might have a better idea whether to go light or dark with the colors on the bow.

As i mentioned in your blog the colors on the loin cloth keep bothering me. I think it is mostly the reddish brown. It seems too different than the rest of the colors. Maybe darken it a little more to be closer to the leather straps. At first i thought it was the brighter white section, but my eye keeps resting on the reddish brown.

For the bow google purple heartwood. You could use a darker shade of your purple sash and still have a wood bow (i have no idea if purple heartwood has the strength for a bow).

Hmmm... I haven't been bothered by the orange brown, but I'll take another look at it. I used the same highlight and shadow colors as the rest of the loin cloth, so that brings some consistency to it. But yes, those midtones haven't been anywhere else. I could possibly use some glazes to bring it a little more in line with the rest of the figure.

Hmm, what about doing the bow in metallics? That might work with the design better than wood. I really like the orangey brown, but I guess I would like to see some of the blue from the pant leg repeated higher up on the mini. Like maybe in the shadow of his eye...?

Thanks, Canny, Blood, Coyote, BFK, and Demi.

BFK, don't speak too soon! There's still his dino companion and the whole base to do, so hopefully all of the colors will still work together when that is done.

Demi, I'm not sure about getting that blue anywhere higher on this guy... but I can certainly work it into some other places in the scene as a whole. Probably a hint of it in the plant leaves and then perhaps some markings on his companion.

I've only done a little more painting on him, nothing worth showing. But I have been working on building the base. I'm taking photos at different stages, so hopefully I will be able to post a short step by step once it's far enough along. I should have something to show in the next couple days. In the meantime, here's the box art version. It's a little easier to see the details on the bow when it's not just base coated dark brown. I'm not quite sure what they were doing with it, looks like maybe a metal middle section and then perhaps wood on the tips.

Demi, I think metal would be a good way to go with it... but I'm going with a whole prehistoric savage lands feel to the figure, so metal strikes me as too high tech. Part of me wishes I'd just cut the bow off, resculpted the hand and then created a simple bow instead. Oh well!

What about a timber and bone bow ...timber handle then the two ends in smooth single colour bone , since elves are bone singers it might fit in well

Oh yeah maybe metal central part with laminated wood an horn outer parts then? Or just wood. Do you think his spear is going to be big enough?

Thanks, guys. Well, he's out hunting dragons or dinosaurs or whatever. Either way it's something big, so he needs a spear that can do some damage!

I've slowed on the painting, but I've put some time into building the base for this guy. I've used sticks for trees before, but this is my first time making one from scratch. I'd seen some tutorials where they used wire armatures. The short version is take a bunch of wires, twist them together, then pull apart the top and bottom for the branches and roots. The first image below shows that early stage. The basic ground is cork and then the wire tree put into place. Next the tree is coated with a modeling compound, in this case I used sculptamold. That was applied to the top of the ground as well. Then sand and rocks were glued on for texture and milliput was used to tweak some of the tree sculpt (and do the dangling roots). After that I got to finally try out some of that crackle medium to create a bit of texture for the tree. It's interesting stuff, how thick or thin you apply it affects how large or small the cracked pieces are (and too thin means nothing happens at all). The randomness works fine here (in my opinion), but for a project where you want a more consistent sizing would definitely require a bit of practice beforehand.

I've got some more stuff I'd like to add to the base, but I think I'll prime it and start on the painting first.

Figure looks great. And very nice start to base ... These cracks in the tree, what "crackle medium" you're used to it, please?

Yep, that tree adds some nice balance to the scene. looking forward to your treatment of the dinosaur companion. What brand of crackle medium did you use? I think it looks great on the tree. I have had some good results with it but it's a little unpredictable and sometimes doesn't want to bond with my paints. The brand I have is by Ranger not sure I can recommend it.
