So Demihuman just brought this to my attention. Apparently I'm the guest of honor at a convention in Switzerland this weekend! Unfortunately they forgot to invite me or tell me anything about it.

It's neat to see they liked my work enough to feature it on their poster and website. Just would have been nice to be asked first and get some credit. Oh well!

wow That's pretty rude not to have been asked, congratulations on being awesome enough for your work to be pilfered for promotion. So have you hit them up for tickets hehe.

Send them an email and say that you're thrilled to be invited, but that it seems like the email containing your ticket confirmation has been lost and that they need to resend it. :D

Well, overnight I got a message and apology from one of the organizers at the show. He said that normally they contact people before using their art, but he talked to the graphics guy and apparently that guy had forgot to contact me. The organizer even offered to send me something to make up for it, but I declined. The apology is enough, plus I take them using my work as a nice compliment, so why should I hold a grudge?

Because it's all about respect l say!! And to crush the little fellow on your scramble to the top of the pile and never look back! The world of the the mini painter is dog eat dog and you've got to have bigger teeth. Sue em to the max! (Just got back from the Donald Trump school of charm ;))

It depends, there is some fine print on P&P when you post your projects about being allowed to use your work for various things, but glad they got in touch and sorted it. Besides, it's not like they know you just fake it all in PS anyway, right? :p Suckers.

Ha, yeah, I've got mad photoshopping skillz. It would be funny if someone posted their figures here and also to one of the digital art forums. On a related note, I think digital art forums like www.cgsociety.org are great places for inspiration and ideas. Worth checking out from time to time!

Yeah, I know certain sites will use your pictures like WAMP for Portal and P&P has checked box for Figure Painter Magazine. Although I think you're giving limited use to just them, not unlimited use to everyone. In the end, it doesn't really matter here. Now, where it could cause trouble is when it comes to competitions like Crystal Brush. Entries there are heavily restricted. If I post a piece and then a magazine decides to use it even without my permission, that work would then be ineligible for the competition. They don't have a problem with it being on facebook or in online galleries but, just to be safe, I try to only show WIP images prior to the show. I heard Caleb Wissenback had a piece disqualified because he had placed it in the display case at one of the Draconic Award competitions. The piece wasn't competing, it was just there for show... but it made it into some official photos and that was enough. That piece did later go on to win best in show at NovaOpen, so it's not an entirely sad story.

Yeah I wouldn't even compete in our local club's show last month because i felt weird about our club hosting it and competing with work that has been all over online. I displayed, but i didn't feel right about competing. I am told a few of my pieces would have placed and it was an open system like Chicago, so i would have gotten something to bring home, but i just felt like i should have had some new pieces to bring and i still felt weird that we we're hosting the show and entering. I'm sure it's common but I would feel weird about getting medals from my pieces in show hosted by my local club. \kinda like breaking my own arm to pat myself on the back? Maybe not. Maybe I'm just weird.

RESPECT.

Bailey can add Dignity 20 to his Character Sheet and therefore passes all Good Manners tests automatically.

Thanks, DR and 10 ball.

Zab, yeah, it can be little strange entering your own groups show. But I feel the more figures at the show, the better. Nice to have a lot of full tables. So displaying and not competing is a good solution. Though at least in the open system you're not taking awards away from anyone else, so you're probably fine either way.

Little more work to show on the dwarf pirate. I finished off the dull red on his coat and started doing some of the shading and blending on his pants.

Thanks, Canny and Darthmarsh.

Darthmarsh, I think I mentioned it a while back, though it's easy to lose those details in the thread. The samurai is 90mm. I think I already shared this, but here's a photo I took before beginning of the samurai next to my last 54mm project.

sorry I missed that. Good to know that it's that big I thought it may have been 28mm and you where perhaps a wizard!

As DR said, the upmost respect to you on your handling of the poster situation. It's so easy to loose your mind over something like this and I think your attitude is to be applauded.

Loving the pirate. The red, purple of the coat works brilliantly with the pale face

Thanks, Darth and Krule.

In case you're curious, here's how I mixed the red. For the base I used Reaper's Violet Red and mixed in Dark Elf Skin (a medium grey). I used roughly 3 parts red to 2 parts grey, perhaps 2 to 1. The shadows were Burgundy Wine. For the highlights I used Fire Red along with a mix of Dark Elf Skin and Vampiric Shadow. For this it was 2 parts red to 1 part grey and 1 part vampiric shadow.

On my screen, the violet red square looks overly purple. In reality its more of a deep red. And the vampiric shadow is more of a dull white (here it looks overly khaki). Basically I'm using the dark elf highlight mixed with vampiric shadow to create a light grey. So, for all the fancy paint names, it's just a medium red mixed with a medium grey and then a light red mixed with a light grey.

Red can be pretty sensitive, easy to turn it into orange or pink depending on what you mix in it. If you're going for more of a muted red like I am here, adding a neutral grey or even a cool grey can produce interesting results. If the color gets too far from red, you can also do a red glaze on the piece. Either a red ink or GW's bloodletter glaze can help. I like this shade as it is, so no red glazes here.

also, kudos for your attitude towards the use of your image i think you made the best choice.

Thank you for the tips on mixing reds. I often want a different colour to what's in the bottles and I think this'll really help.

No problem. Red, for me at least, is one of those scary colors. For a long time I avoided doing too much with it, as it seemed to quickly shift too far from red when I added other colors. I still think it can be a sensitive color, but experiment with adding some grey, brown, purple, blue, etc. The greys and browns can help mute the color and produce some interesting effects. Blues and purples are especially nice to give the shadows a bit more depth.

Great advice, Bailey - and if I ever get around to buying some 'proper' paints I'll give those a go. The fire red is lovely.

Having just finished the beast that is khorgorath.... yes. Red is scary!
