Bailey03's WIP

Ha, yeah, I've got mad photoshopping skillz. It would be funny if someone posted their figures here and also to one of the digital art forums. On a related note, I think digital art forums like www.cgsociety.org are great places for inspiration and ideas. Worth checking out from time to time!

Yeah, I know certain sites will use your pictures like WAMP for Portal and P&P has checked box for Figure Painter Magazine. Although I think you're giving limited use to just them, not unlimited use to everyone. In the end, it doesn't really matter here. Now, where it could cause trouble is when it comes to competitions like Crystal Brush. Entries there are heavily restricted. If I post a piece and then a magazine decides to use it even without my permission, that work would then be ineligible for the competition. They don't have a problem with it being on facebook or in online galleries but, just to be safe, I try to only show WIP images prior to the show. I heard Caleb Wissenback had a piece disqualified because he had placed it in the display case at one of the Draconic Award competitions. The piece wasn't competing, it was just there for show... but it made it into some official photos and that was enough. That piece did later go on to win best in show at NovaOpen, so it's not an entirely sad story.

Once you post your work on CMON and/or P&P, the fine print does, in fact, make it the property of the site. However, you also have to be reasonably certain at that point that others may take it and use it for their own gain, because it's the Internet. If you google Hobbit spider miniature, for instance, this image will show up under google images. Therefore it essentially becomes public domain.

Of course, in the interests of fair practices and ethical behavior, if you use an image as the basis for an entire event, it makes sense to not only credit the author but to ask his permission. I'd imagine you lack legal recourse though if they fail to do this.

BFK, I definitely understand and expect that any image I post on the web can end up in unexpected places. Occasionally while I'm searching for references I'll see my own stuff pop up in other people's pinterest threads or shared by mini related facebook groups. It's a little different sharing something because you think it's cool or saving for personal use and using it to promote an event. But the images aren't copyrighted, there's no watermark saying property of Bailey03, so you're right, there's not much I could do to stop somebody. I'm doing this as a hobby, if I was creating art for a living then perhaps I'd be more protective of the images. In the end, I believe them not contacting me was just an oversight (as they said in their email).

BAM, yup, most of what I use are Reaper paints plus the occasional Scale75. The blue is Reaper's Heather Blue with a bit of Midnight Blue for shading. I still need to add some highlights... not sure which I'll use for that yet. Since we're on the topic of paints, I took a quick picture of the figure with the paints I used for the blue and red. I shared the Reaper color swatches for the red mix, but they're not always accurate for the color. You can see here that the Violet Red isn't nearly as purple as it is in the swatch. And the Vampiric Shadow swatch is completely different from the actual paint. The rest of them are pretty close.

Maybe it's just my screen, but these look pretty different from the actual bottles

Bailey you are certainly one of the few reaper guys. I think you could use craft acrylics and do a bang up job, mainly because you would instinctually know how to use the paint based on how it was feeling. We've all used paint that started to dry out, or paint that separated from its binder, etc, and knowing how to react to unruly acrylic is what separates the men from the boys. I once explained how to get a smooth finish on a paint job to a gamer. Basically, I likened this to pushing and spreading the paint around on the figure so that it all settled evenly. Letting excess collect in certain areas, or conversely spreading it too thin in spots is what leaves a rough paint finish. I only figured this out after months of painting, despite how Duh it sounds.

That being said, I think you would really enjoy some VMC paints that are common to most painters. Smoke, dark sea blue, brown sand, etc...They are so yummy and I couldn't do without.

VMC are good paints, I used to use those for everything. You can make just about any paint work. The various mini lines (GW, P3, Reaper, VMC, Scale75, etc) are all good choices and there are great mini painters who use craft paints. There are some subtle differences in how they all work, so in the end you go with what fits your style best, what's easiest to work with.

Well, I can't let BAM be the only one posting pirates, so here's an update on my dwarf. I wrapped up the shading and highlighting on his pants and then moved on to some details. I got a little sloppy while working on his hand and smeared a bit of paint on the coat. But that gave me an excuse to fix a few things that had been bugging me. There was a shadow line on the front bottom left that just didn't fit, so I got rid of it. I also lightened up some shadows on his left arm that I thought were too dark.

Ha, yeah, it does help to have something different. But, to be completely honest, I don't exactly have the highest expectations for this piece. I like it and I'm having fun working on it, but I doubt it will win in a hotly contested category like Fantasy Single. Maybe I'll get lucky and wind up in 3rd... but I'm not counting on it. I've got higher hopes for the samurai and my historical piece. Of course I'm not done yet, so maybe I'll feel more optimistic when he's finished. In the meantime, it's a fun piece and a good distraction from my other projects! :smile-big:

I think a chance to finish as a winner still has. The figure is excellent and Your painting too. On the other hand, if the piece you brought fun and relaxation, fulfilled its purpose. And any the triumph would be a bonus ...:)

I have to ask Bailey - what happens to all of your masterpieces when you're done? I hope you have shelves in your house to display them.

Thanks, Arkhareon! I don't want to see too pessimistic. I like the figure, I just think my other entries have a better shot than this one. But who knows, I've been surprised before.

ArchArad, yup, most end up on display around home or in my office at work. I've sold off some pieces as well. As long as I've had a chance to take a figure to some shows, if someone is interested in it then I'm open to the idea. There are a few pieces (like the Hobbit one) that I feel represent major milestones or have some personal attachment, so I really wouldn't want to part with them. But, most of the time, I'm more excited by the newer stuff rather than the old figures.

I absolutely love the pirate figure! Your colors are always so beautiful (the orange on your samurai, the bluish ambient light on the hobbit), but that coat is just killing me! That figure and the style you're using on it are sort of what I have going through my head when I try to imagine what I want my figures to look like at this stage of my painting journey. Lest anyone think I'm just kissing ass here, let me add that I actually prefer the pirate to the samurai. I cannot possibly deny how artistic, inspiring, and technically brilliant the samurai is, but I just like the soul in the dwarf better. I hope you take that as a compliment, as I intend it. If it were one of those you felt like selling some day...
I really like the few Reaper paints I have, but use mostly VMC (which I also like). I do think I'm going to get some more Reaper paints, though, as the few I have are a pleasure to use and I reach for them often. So thanks for telling me a few which I should buy!

Thanks, SaintToad. Much appreciated!

I didn't do a whole lot of painting this weekend, but I did start building the base for the dwarf pirate. It's a portion of his ship made out of balsa wood. I've still got some details to add like ropes and rigging, but the bulk of it is there. I angled the base as the ship would be rocking due to the waves, plus I think the angled base is just more interesting. Finally, now that I know what the ground is like that he'll be standing on, I was able to attach his other hand.

Your probably not going to like this mate and I don't want to get your back up but I think I prefer this guy over the samurai. The pirate is charismatic neat and well balanced.

I know the huge amount of time and effort you've put into the Samurai and the painting is sublime but the figure well I am trying to give it the love it deserves but I just don't like it. Its so busy too many things going on I just don't know were to look :( Don't hate me for saying this please.

Thanks, Canny and Fluister.

Andy, no worries. You're not required to like everything I do! I'm aware the samurai is a busy figure. Unfortunately, it's just the way it is. All the equipment on the guy is what should be there. I suppose I could paint him without patterns... but that wouldn't seem right either. I've wanted to do a samurai for quite some time. It will probably be a loooooong time before I do another one, but I plan to see this one through. Hopefully in the end it will all work out!

Lol ....the samurai is probably without a doubt the best model you've done bails....I'm still standing by my call as a check winner...right up there with another busy piece kyrils giant putin looking space marine....same kind of thing two diff models....just a rarity of such brilliance in mini painting....guess it's my xzezbeth going for third....again...really you think bout it you only have to impress the judges and I'm certain that will be e-zine ;) it's really the subject matter that some may find differing in taste not the paintjob.

Thanks, BAM. I'm hopeful it will do well!

Here's some news for all you nurgle fans... Michael Kontraros is releasing a 75mm scale figure heavily inspired by the plague marines. As with most of his figures, he's doing a pre-order through indiegogo. I've gotten in on some of his past projects, the work is done, this is just to raise funds for production. I would expect on time delivery (unlike most kickstarter/indiegogo campaigns) and almost no risk.

It's a neat looking figure, one I'm very tempted by. You can check out the indiegogo page for more images including the painted version.
