The additions of the highlights really bind the sword to the rest. And yeah it was a bit plain before adding the texture.

The base is going to be awesome, I already think. I am sure of it. If I find the moment (at home) I will share my grandma's trick on how to unthread/thread a yarn (with a little SBS) so you all could adjust it's thickness to your desire.

I've been putting some paint on the base. My focus so far has been the outside of the ship, the inside of the ship is just base coated. I went with a grey-brown shade for the wood. It's not the traditional ship color, but I think it works for a pirate ship and it helps the figure stand out against the rest of the background.

I'm still trying to decide what I'll do with the inside of the ship. I've done some weathering already on the outside to make the scene more interesting. I'll do some on the inside too, but I'm contemplating adding more detail on the deck itself. I'm not sure what though. Maybe some bottles, papers, other debris. Whatever it is, it should make sense and not just be needless clutter. I know BAM is working on a similar base, so maybe I'll borrow some ideas from him. =)

Great work once again Bailey! Love the details like the bird droppings. Maybe you can include a wooden bucket filled with water (make sure the water is level with the sea and not the deck of the ship!) or maybe a canonball rolling around, a sword, a wooden leg, an eyepatch,... So many things to choose from, what works best in your mind is most iportant I think.

Thanks, everyone. Canny, actually the seagull is in the mail. I order this set along with a couple other odds and ends from Industria Mechanika. Whether I use the bird remains to be seen, but I thought it'd be nice to have the option.

Here's what I have lined up a bucket and a sponge 2bareels of grog,a treasure chest ,a chain and a buoy made of sponges.ive gotten all my stuff from the only person I ever use which is beyardi Maynard .hes great

So, remember that samurai I was working on? Well, I didn't forget. I got stuck on what I wanted to do with the design work on the sleeves, so I took a break for a bit. I'm starting to feel the time pressure to finish everything in time for Crystal Brush, so this weekend I got back to the figure, made some decisions, and got it moving forward again. For the right sleeve I decided to go with the mon (clan emblem) for the Minamoto clan. It's a set of bamboo leaves and gentian flowers. This pattern will go on the pants too, so I didn't want anything too busy and complicated. There's some detail in the design, but by spacing it out I think I get the look I wanted.

With the sleeves done, I started working on the back. Previously I'd been using that as a contact point to help steady the figure. So I was waiting to avoid rubbing paint off. But, now it's the next hurdle. I'm using one of the historical armor patterns, a gradient with lower levels getting darker and darker.

When that's done, it will be time to add the shoulder armor panels. So I've started to paint their undersides. It will be visible from a few angles, so it's got to be done. Because nothing can be easy, some sections will have a repeat of the chest pattern.

Once all that is done (and I add the rest of the helmet), I'll still have the whole lower body to do! This is definitely the most complex figure I've ever attempted.

I get sweaty hands just thinking about assembling all those pieces over all your freehand patterns! You are truly brave, sir. Then again, I do not see how this could be painted in any other way.

That design you've settled on for his right sleeve (the clan symbol) is intricate enough to blend with the rest of the decoration, but not overwhelming. Great choice!

Really the work of a professional,funny thing is David is just a hobbyist.this man however has the skill ,talent and drive along with the smarts to create some of the greatest miniatures that any an can view in competition settings....crystal brush is a smorgasbord of the toughest skill levels around I believe this year alone David mentioned a list of about 20 pros .your talking the best of the best.look at the top 50 on cmon and youll see what I mean....there's no wonder when they give out the biggest cash prize of 10,000 dollars for the grand prize...yet David always seems to walk away with gold brushes .....he's one of the most talented guys on the face of this earth...he knows miniature painting....it makes me happy when I win ,anybody would feel the same way....but it's even more heartfelt watching David "dethrone" some of the biggest names in the craft....you gotta love this mans work....the Samarai is in my top 5 favorite miniatures of my entire career...no lie.

Oistene, yeah, assembly is definitely a tricky part of this figure (and probably any samurai style figure). In general I like to assemble as much as I can before painting, but sometimes you really don't have any other choice but to do it in sections.

BAM and Khonner, ha, well I think that might be a little optimistic, but who knows. Right now my goal is just to get a trophy in a non-historical category. One of these times I'd love to get a top three overall spot... but with people like Ben and Kirill entering, I expect there will be a lot of people battling for 3rd so I'm not counting on winning it. I'll keep my fingers crossed and perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised. :smile:
