Demi, part of that is the fact that the pictures were taken with my cellphone instead of the real camera. As a result, the colors are a bit washed out. The pictures up from the previous post show the true color for the skin. However, I do plan on applying a number of glazes to the skin. I just need to do the sections touching the skin first. If I make a mistake while doing the hair (get some brown on the cheek for example), it's easy to fix at this point. But once I've done the glazes, there's no way to repeat that process for a single point on the face. I'd either have to mix something close and settle for the imperfection or just redo the entire cheek. Once the hair is finished I could glaze just the face, but I'll probably wait until after I've painted her clothes so then I can do all of the skin at once.

I'll keep the Chestnut Brown glazes in mind for the hair. As I said, this was just roughing in the lights and shadows. But once I'm happy with their placement and finish up the blending, I'll see about making some color tweaks.

Zab, good idea with the manga reference. I feel like this character has a bit of an anime feel to the sculpt (though not too much), so that could be a good source for style inspiration.

I also used manga pictures as a reference for hair and placement of "higlights". really helps to make it more lively. Looking good so far, will follow your progress with interest since it is something I struggle with atleast darker hair. I have an easier time with lighter coloured hair.

I like the look of that, looks like she is based on the witcher game (I think there's a female character in #3 but I haven't played it) and it would give me a chance to practice whites, father's day coming up too.. time to drop hints lol

I like your version of Hailey, looks like a more realistic take on the mini than what I've been doing

Think it looks excellent and you know exactly what your doing on this project bails. Your 100% right at this point if all gazes are in and there is a mistake than the models is a pain in the butt to fix and there will be imperfections.you def have enough experience of why and how you do things in the order and way you do them.;)

Thanks, all! Zab... I was just going to paint some more clothes on her to warm her up. But if you want to help then I'll hold off on that for now.

MAXXxxx, yeah, I just saw the email announcement about that figure. Looks interesting. Not sure it's something I must get right away, but if I can come up with a good idea for how to paint it or a scene to use her in then I will. Not 100% happy with the pose, but hard to put a finger on exactly why. Nope, still haven't gotten back to working on Jessica Thunderhawk. Maybe one of these days I'll finish her.

In other mini-related news, I've been writing up content for a new site: http://figurementors.com/
On there you will find tutorials, kit reviews, interviews, and a lot of other articles related to modeling. I've put together articles on OSL, advice for new to historical figures, and a tutorial on painting unnatural skin. There's plenty of other stuff there worth checking out too. Hope you enjoy!

I really enjoyed your unnatural skin tutorial, I found it very informative and very easy to follow. I still need to read the OSL one and I'm looking forward to seeing your thinking and creative process on such a amazing piece.

You definitely have a flair for tutorials

Thanks, all! Darth, I'm glad you like them. They take a lot of time, but I enjoy writing them.

Lost, I was hoping to be there this weekend but my wife got guilt-ed into attending a resident retreat on Saturday (despite being 36 months pregnant), so I had to drive her there and back instead. I doubt I'll be able to make it next month either, but hopefully I can get to a meeting again soon!

In other news, I did a private coaching session last night. Sounds fancier when I say it like that, really it was just hanging out and painting for a couple of hours. Our focus was painting skin or, more specifically, female skin. Since I'm already doing a normal female figure, last night I decided to do something a little different. I started on the Molly (angel) figure from Milosh Miniatures. Ever since I first saw this figure, I knew I wanted to paint her up as a fallen angel. So I used the color mix from the unnatural skin tutorial. For the shadows that was ~50/25/25 Chestnut Brown, Rosy Shadow, and Burgundy Wine. The midtone is 50/50 Rosy Shadow and Vampiric Shadow. The highlights were then ~66/33 Vampiric Skin and Fair Skin, then pure Vampiric Highlight for the top most highlights. No glazes yet, that will be one of the final steps on this piece.

The focus so far has (obviously) been just the face. This was bit tougher than I expected since she's a small 54mm figure (maybe closer to 45mm). But so far I am quite happy with how she's turning out.

Thanks for the comment, Eusi! I'm glad you enjoyed the thread!

Well, I've made more progress on the fallen angel figure. The skin is mostly finished, just a few blends to fix and then (once I finish the rest) I'll come back to add the glazes. This was a challenging piece. I'm trying to push the contrast while still having pale skin and the soft/gradual blends needed for a female figure. The pose is also tricky since the shadows and highlights don't necessarily fall in the usual spots on the body. You definitely need to think about how zenithal lighting is supposed to work and what angles the various surfaces make with respect to the primary light source. This was a good exercise for that.
