So,.. I saw your profile pic on inner circle the other day. You look nothing like I thought. (Am I the only one who assigns people here voices and faces according to their typing style as well as their written content? I'm usually wrong on the faces though,.. but sometimes I get the voices right. I dunno,.. maybe it's just me being a weirdo again,..er,.. still,..)

Thanks, everyone!

Webmonkey, what's inner circle? Well, I like to picture people's faces based on their CMON avatars. I know it's not accurate, but it's amusing!

Inner circle,.. a facebook group. At least, there's a guy up there with the name of david powell and pics of your stuff,... not you??

Oh yeah, I was thinking you were referring to some website. Yeah, Demihuman added me to the InnerCircle - SFBAMP group. I guess I'm an honorary bay area person. :)

Here's Colette working on some arts and crafts at daycare. It's possible she's not enjoying it quite as much as I hoped she would. Maybe when we move up to brushes she'll have a little more fun...

On another note, I have made some progress on the new knight figure. Hopefully I'll have some pictures of that to post in the next few days.

Yeah she totally wants to use a brush like her pa. "What the hell! Did you just stick my hands in F-ing paint?!"

Thanks, all! Yeah, I'm sure at that age I would have had the same reaction if I'd got my hand stuff into paint. To be honest, if I accidentally stuck my hand into wet paint right now I'd probably have the same reaction (well, at least on the inside... I'd hopefully hide it a little better now). The good news is she's not all pouts and grumpy faces...

Meanwhile, back at miniatures...

Last time I'd started roughing in the design for the knight's chest. I took that simple version and filled it in (roughing in the shadows as I went). Started with the basic body and added the beaks. Then I went and did the wings.

Now that I was happy with the basic design, I turned to the background. I wanted to do a black design on a white coat. So I started to work on shading/blending the white for the coat. Not much painting time, so I focused only on the chest for now. You'll notice that this blurs the edges of the design. That's fine. Next I'll go back in and do the shading/highlighting for the design and add more fine details. The previous steps were just so I'd have a guide for the design and so I didn't waste my time blending white in areas that would later be covered up.

Really nice work Bailey. I'm very interested to see how you work the design and shadows.

Out of curiosity, is the cloak a wrap or draped over the mail like a poncho? I'm only asking because the opening looks like it starts on the left hand side of the body but the tail of the eagle (hidden by the belt) appears to down down fairly straight. Is that a feature of the coat where the opening is on one side or is the figure position twisted so as to give that impression.

Only asking because I have an Aylmer de Valence to paint and the opening at the front of his coat is centered.

Fantastic work so far!

Thanks! I'm not sure it's like a wrap or a poncho. From looking at the sculpt, I'd say it'd be worn more like a shirt that continues on down past the knees and is cinched at the waist with a belt. In the other examples I've seen, the slit at the bottom would be in the center... but for this sculpt the slit appears to be off to one side. So I placed the tail part of the design where I'm guessing the center of the garment is. Hard to tell from the roughed in version (and with the belt in front), but the tail should follow the cloth and go off towards one side (due to the opening) rather than being straight up and down.

Hi Bailey,

You explained it better than I did. For whatever reason i didnt think to describe it as a long T-shirt. That makes more sense. Again, i think you have done a remarkable job so far. I just havent seen an offset cut up before. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for showing the detail on the shadow sketching. It has my brain thinking.

Btw...cute future painter you have there

Just discovered the Olfo hobbit with the mad OSL, (thanks to Captain927.) All I can say is I'll be studying your tutorials on this subject. Completely stunning.

This is a few months late, but I'm more than a few months behind on everyone's WIP. Congratulations on acquiring the 1:1 scale miniature! Keep working on getting her interested in painting because if you don't she'll take an interest in something else, like percussion instruments.
