How do Bank Holidays work?
Unless I specifically sign to work them, do I need to by law?

I think that means you\'re not supposed to work on those days and therefore can\'t be required to (either by direct instruction or innuendo / \'subtle\' hint).Originally posted by reverend
The company I work for suggests we\'re entitled to them contractually, but we\'re unsure what that means for us on any given UK holiday.
More like, as I suspect reverend works for an outscourced contract company they will be working on a \"Time Off In Lieu\" instead of wages.Originally posted by Einion

So if you choose to work on one it\'s overtime; then you have to decide on the OT rate if you have more than one - usually same as weekend or Sunday rate, if applicable. Triple time!

Yep, GMB. Same on that site as TSSA.
Looked further into my contract and I have 25 a year normal days (4yrs of service coming up) and 8 public/bank holidays each year (\'entitled\' as they say).
Our HR policy says:
However, some full-time employees work a shift arrangement or unusual working pattern which means they work different hours on different days of the week. It may be more appropriate in this case to incorporate Bank Holidays into the normal holiday entitlement calculation (similar to the part-time calculation below). In this case, the employee must deduct the number of working hours from their holiday entitlement when a Bank Holiday falls on a normal working day.\"
