Beastman Lord WIP

This is my work for the OzPainters Beastman challenge. The idea here was to all do something similar with a few rules (well, guidelines really) so we can discuss how we went about what we\'ve done. The challenge was all about challenging yourself!

The focus for this challenge was skintones and atmosphere. My idea was to have a beastman with lighter than normal fur and skin, place him in a dark mid-winter forrest (max base size is 40mm).

For atmosphere, I converted him quite simply to look like he has snatched up a broken spear to finish off a downed challenger in a scrap for warband supremacy. So i\'ll be putting the remainder of the spear and possibly a broken shield on the base as atmoshpere. As a personal challenge I was going to try and foucs on zenithal lighting, or at least being more aware of where the light is coming from. Also, the idea was to finish within two weeks, so Im being challenged to lift my throughput!

I was aiming for something a bit paler for his fur, but i quite like it at the moment. Unfortunately im unsure how to do the plain skin. I had thought of doing from Khaki/bone up to white, but thought this might not work considering the fur is highlighted up to khaki/bone mix.

Thoughts, comments and criticism welcomed!

Looking great so far... nothing to ad for the moment. It\'s one of GW\'s best minis IMO.

Keep up the good work

like the whole idear. The colors on the leg fur looks kind of cartoony, that is ment in a good way - really like it

I think the key to using that technique is to keep the paints super thin so the black really shows through. I\'ve not tried the technique myself yet >_<

I wasnt really attempting underpainting. It was more so i could take a bunch of photos to use as reference for lighting. It hasnt realy helped in that my painting isnt good enough to convey where a light source is!

Thought Id post some pics of the beastman Ive been working on in fits and starts unfortunately. Still plenty of work to do!

Some quick photos i took this morning, so they arent that good. Especially the \"flowers\", they are much more brown IRL. Need to push those highlights and work on my smoothness! Lots of things even crap pictures pick up that dont look so bad by eye

Had a bit of a play some tamiya weathering stuff i picked up. The little pack has three pastel things that are \"soot\" \"snow\" and \"rust\". Were reasonably effective on the butt spike of the spear, not so on the spear head. Still need to work on their application!

Probably the wrong time to suggest this, what with you trying zenithal lighting on him and fixing him to a base, but I think that with the weapon swap he\'d look really cool in a more horizontal position, as if he has hurled himself through the air. You could have supported him with a branch hidden pin.

Oh well, too late now and he still looks rather good.

I can see where you have gone for the illusion of light hitting his upper arms, and this works well, but it\'s let down a bit by the lack of similar treatment on his hands. Perhaps lightening up the underside and lower areas of his mouth and chin wouldn\'t be a bad idea either.

The rest looks pretty competent, and the base is nice, although the mud could do with some more tone shifts and depth I think.

I\'m noticing a trend in your stuff, you aren\'t a massive fan of colour and brightness are you? lol

I think it\'s comming on quite nicely, really like the spearhead, and the flowers... some more high lights is needed indeed
