bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Thanks everyone - I'm keeping an eye out for pitchforks and flaming torches. I now have an irrational fear of the Amish. :)

Schwarz: I look forward to seeing your version of him!

And while you are here: 900 posts!

as a thank you for your helpful comments on here (pitchforks aside) I like to celebrate every 100 posts with a sketch. Schwarz had the dubious honour of leaving post 900, and it included a rather diabolical laugh in it. So, to commemorate that and to give an idea of something I'm considering for my next sculpt, here is an evil dwarf in a hood and cape. Very dastardly.

As always, keep posting! I appreciate all your expertise, your consideration, and your insanity. :)

Great! Thanks for sharing, Schwarz - I must say it's fascinating to see the different approaches to him.

Miss for his successor...

I, uh, Cut his head off. Eep! I wanted to test out casting something n two parts - never done this before, of course - so sawed off his head with a jeweller's saw. I pulled out some of the foil in his head and replaced with sculpey, and I've made a little triangle shape to help the two lock together. It was surprisingly nerve wracking...

It's not too surprising how nerve-wracking that is. You're willing cutting into a thing you pumped many hours in. Very glad it turned out good because that bust is awesome.

Thanks Zab, flu. Yep, the fit is good - just got to do the mold and stuff now...

bit it more on the elf - more blocking in black (I don't have any black primer, oops) and a first pass at the flesh. The flesh faire was a big help - I already feel better about this skin compared to the last one.

Remember to put in some venting channels for undercuts this time.

With the Elf I am not too happy. He looks very rough and dark to me, but I know you're going to do a lot more so I am not going to lament on this. The Freehand is simply mindblowing.

As fluisterwoud said, not surprising at all. I would expect it to be incredibly nerve wracking! Fortunately it worked out though.

On the elf, yeah, looks like you are struggling with the nmm. Unfortunately I'm no nmm wizard either, so I can't offer much help. I do know that for it to be effective you have to have really high contrast and your highlights need to go nearly all the way to white. The placement of highlights on a reflective surface is also a bit different, and that's where the real skill comes in. Hopefully someone else can give you more pointers...

And here I thought everyone was comfortable cutting off heads. I mean its a totally normal thing to do right? Lol. I will give you credit as that came out real well bud.

Yep, you are right - I'm not getting on with nmm at all. So tricky! I must've painted the chestplate five different ways and still not got near it. Still, I'm going to persevere. I'll get it right eventually - even if it sends me insane!

i've been mostly painting, but in between bouts of frustration and paint drying I've cracked on with a bit of sculpting (it almost feels like my 'comfort zone' now). I'm tackling a dwarf as mentioned above; and here's where I got to:

Armature:

Legs and basic body shape:

chainmail (ugh):

the final arm positioning and head for scale:

still lots to do yet, but he's a welcome relief from painting cockups...

oh, and remember this little fella? I added a bit more detail to the legs and changed the headpiece to an antenna:

You really move forward so fast, I can't almost comment xD

On the Elf:
Have a look at Thor (pegaso o nocturna models can't remember) from AndyG it has some great NMM golden armour!
some super high white reflective points help out in believing in NMM

On the demon:
Great move!! I think you would cast it better this way. In any case take care on how you split the mold over the head, or you'll have problems with the horns when unmolding. ;)
You may even want to make a three part mould, but I think that is a little bit (waaaay more in fact) difficult.

On the dwarf:
That is some nice mail armour!! The sketch is great also! Did you left that long "arm" armature on purpose to make the sword/weapon?

Thanks everyone.

Maenas: the long arms on the armature were just there because I wasn't sure how long his arms would be - but actually sticking the wire into the cork made his legs more stable and easier to sculpt, so I'll definitely do that again!

right - here is attempt number 327 on the nmm. It's a bit better to my eyes, but still needs neatening. The gold isn't done yet.

what do you think, folks? Do I strip it and start again?

I got to thinking about your demon. And I thought: of there was a series of demon Horsemen of the Apocalypse he would most definitely be War. Then I started pondering what the other horsemen would look like. So the upshot of all of this pondering is the following: I'm working on a demon Pestilence sculpt. I'll update my WIP as I make progress and if I don't make a complete dog's breakfast of it I want to send it to you when I'm done (unpainted). So please PM me your postal address if you approve of the plan.
