bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Nice, looks like you've stayed busy this week!

On your decision to try competitive painting: Good luck and go for it! Based on what you've accomplished in only six months I'm sure you'll do well. Right now it looks like you're finding a lot of hobby time so that should make it easier, and if you really want to get better it certainly helps to have goals and deadlines to keep you motivated. Going to conventions and meeting other folks in the hobby is absolutely a lot more fun if you can be competitive and have some nice work that you are really proud of. But it can definitely become a huge time sink (think hundreds of hours of work for a complex entry) and somewhat stressful, which can take a lot of the fun out of the hobby. Now prepare for the brutal criticism part!

On the dwarf: I like the progress, the hand with the staff looks really natural. Not so pleased with the left hand with the lantern though. It looks really big in the pic, although that could be a camera trick. I'm also not fond of the way the lantern is just looped over his thumb. I feel like the handle should be held by all four fingers to look right, which may require rotating the hand some. (I warned you, was that brutal enough? :))

I think I might cry....

Only kidding, that kind of criticism is perfect! I know what you mean about the lantern: and I'm not happy with how he's holding it either. But it's a simple matter to cut his hand off and make a new one. So keep up the brutality. :)

Going to a convention is a good shout; I'm going to try to get to Salute for at least one day.

i wish I had lots of hobby time (3 kids a house move and a 24hr job dictate otherwise) but I do manage to get an hour or so a night, so it'll be slow but steady progress. I'm not rushing this one.

thanks to everyone:

Yeti - I recommend it, it's very relaxing!

Arch - yes, the thighs were a bit too big so whittled them down. I'm trying to get the balance between muscular and feminine - currently they are very muscular, so I probably need to tone it down. Here's where they are today:

i reckon they look fine dazz. true they are muscular, but they look like a lady's legs, albeit the legs of a female body builder or a badass lady warrior.

That looks much better D. I'm great with them being muscular - they're just better proportioned now. :)

@YetiSA - I *might* know someone who could hook you up with a few bits and pieces....

Yep, still Super sculpey firm. I got two bricks of it for £10 ($15) off the internet, so loads of it still to plough through. I'm still getting used to it, but I do like the way it works. The only bad bit is that it is not in any way sticky (it hardly even sticks to itself unbaked). But I've solved that with some of this stuff:

And while the kids ate breakfast I managed to rough some arms on:

A quick update from me:

Firstly the lady has a face. I think this is the best face I've made so far, but I shall let you be the judge...

next... Remember the war demon dude? Well, he's really been through the wars...

he got very broken in the casting process. I've fixed up what I can, but he probably needs a lot more fixing to get him anything like done.

The he first test cast came out... Okay. I think. I need to assemble him, remove all the bits of rubbish on him, and see how he fares. I might have to call this one a major failure though. Ah well.

Not sure of the integrity of the mold or the quality of the final casts, but if he works out let me know if you want one!

EDIT:

a quick tidy up, and he could be a lot worse. I'm going to give him a bit of primer and see how much of the detail came out.

I'd love to add him to my bgcdazzler wishlist! I really hope that the original can get patched up. Pestilence needs a friend on the shelf.

Oh, great improvement on her face - her right eye (left of pic) may be slightly higher than the other one though. Worth a check. Her breasts look a bit high on her chest. Bit if you're going to have them encased in armour that should be okay - the armour can act as a medieval wonderbra.

Hello all,

Could I get some painting advice? I'm tackling the rear of the cloak, and not sure of the best design.

the main cloak I've done in a straightforward red. The bottom left is a first stab at pushing the contrast further. The right corner some little patterns on each.

Do do any of these work? Do you have a preference? Or should I do something completely different?

Bottom left for me, the bottom right looks nice but I'm not sure it would work spread across the whole cloak
