bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

well you can choose from white and black which are tough, red which is hard too or a royal blue or purple which would be somewhat more forgiving to work with.

Thanks Zab, Khavor, BaM, everyone. Something to think about.

Crappy phone pic, but I'm pleased with the eyes!

Looking good, Dazzler. You've got quite a focal point there with all those facial creases drawing attention to the center of the face. He seems like a perfect candidate for spittle experiments!

Thanks Saint - spittle is definitely worth thinking about for this angry chap.

It possibly doesn't look like it, but I've just spent ages reprinting almost all the flesh to get it smoother, and bring out more detail/contrast around the eyes. Is this working better?

Right then, just a quick session tonight - here's the basic clothing colour scheme, all base coated. Time for shadows and freehand!

Hey Dazzler, you might want to kill me after I say this, but I feel like the eye color doesn't take full advantage of the palette you've chosen for the overall figure. I'd love to see maybe some green to play off of the ruddy skin and now the maroon bits of the vestments. Maybe one of you photoshop wizards could see how that would look? Just a thought. He's definitely looking cool.

Great work on the eyes and good progress, sorry this is late but the glint you've painted on the eyes would work better at the top of the eye. Nice lot of progress though

Thanks guys...

Saint: what are you doing to me? :) green eyes would look good, I think. I wanted cold eyes to counterbalance the anger, but maybe it's the wrong look.

WGS: you're probably right (as usual) - I was trying to put it lower to reflect his quite heavy brow, assuming it would be a bit lower in the eye, but perhaps overcompensated.

Typical - just when I think I've done a bit sort of alright, you all demand a repaint!

i'm going to play with the hat a bit more, then make a decision on the eyes later (yeah, yeah - otherwise known as 'wimping out'...).

Sorry mate, they look good regardless so leave them if your happy. Always remember advice is just that and can always be taken or not.:smile-big:

Thanks Darth, glad you like him.

Right, little bit more progress: just roughing in a bit of freehand on the hat. Not sure about it yet - not very neat.

And of course I wouldn't be me without a bit of other shenanigans on the go, so here's the next one:

Like the design of the freehand, cool start on the new one have you decided what it's going to be or are you going with the flow and see what it becomes ?

Evening all,

No paint tonight, as I'm not convinced by the freehand. I'm going to paint over it then try something simpler. I sketched something out below (and yes, that's the sketch book kindly given to me by Schwarz - it's lovely). I went for something that at first glance looks like a holy cross, but on reflection it's a bit more sinister. What do you think?

oh, and a bit more sculpting. WGS: I never have more than a vague plan! This turned into the beginnings of an Orc. I'm happy with the musculature, proportions, and pose - but the head needs work. And the whole body needs smoothing too. But a little bit of progress anyway...

Thanks Sicks, WGS. I've reworked the head a bit, and smoothed out the body/built up the back (you can see from the side view that he's more proportionally correct now).

the pictures maybe don't capture it, but I have to say this is probably my best attempt at an Orc face so far. What do you think?

Right, I'm going to have another crack at the freehand tonight. Wish me luck!

Ha, nice to see that book finds some good use.

I like the sketched version of the freehand more. Can't wait to see it on the miniature.
That orc... well. Let's see where you're going with this one. Don't have much of an opinion yet.

I like the sketch design (I must've missed it before) my only suggestion for it is to make the blade longer if possible or bring the hilt either higher or less wide, it looks a bit squat for a sword at the moment but with a narrower hilt could look like a dagger or longer blade for a sword, hopefully you see this before you spend ages painting it on
