I think the freehand looks great man. As Kbear said just needs crushing up. Nice start on the Orc

Thanks all, but the freehand is gone alas. I'll update pics tonight.
In in the meantime I've shut the orc's mouth, positioned him, and done the arms.

As promised, here's the new freehand bit on the bishop's hat. Here's the rough outline based on the sketch:
you can also see (I hope) where I've shaded the folds of his robe. They came out quite smooth, so pleased with the effect so far.
Anyway, here's the hat with the colours blocked in. Still got a lot of tidying and details, but I think it hangs together better than the first attempt. More later - but not tonight, I'm starting to go cross eyed!

Ps any suggestions on how I should clothe the ork? I'm torn between armour/mediaeval or shamanic (or other suggestions very welcome!).

Great work on the freehand! definitely I think it's one of your strengths and your drawing skills shine through it^^
On the new orc sculpt I would like to point you out to things that I am not convinced... always with the intention to help
I think the forearm looks a bit tad oversized (it could be a thing of the WIP work though), and also from the side view the jaw looks a little bit extra long or thin, or with a bit unnatural movement, I specially noticed this on the second picture beginning from the last one of this post.
On the other hand I think you really nailed the feet and the toes!!

Thanks Darth, Maenas. Darth, your tropic thunder idea is awesome - I won't use it for this guy, but I really, really want to do some 'full metl jakkit' Orc busts now. They will be up next.

That's a nice idea, Saint. I've done some gubbins (technical term) on his legs, and a very rough animal skin on his shoulders, but all this is removable. I'm quite pleased with the stitches, though.

Stitch work looks very good and nice detailing, I think the rib muscles need a little tidying as they look a little jumbled at the moment

Thanks, glad you like it. I find it frustrating: after doing most of it I've found a way of doing much thinner lines, so to my eyes it's quite clunky and blobby. I'm half-tempted to remove it and start again, but this is supposed to be a 'fun' mini so I'll try to carry that over to the next one instead.

And now for something completely different...
My train home was massively delayed tonight, and my phone was out of battery, so I got the iPad out and had a crack at an app called ProCreate (which sounds rude, but isn't).
It's amazing: it has incredibly easy, powerful tools to make art with. I mean ridiculously easy.
So with Darth's excellent suggestion of doing a Tropic Thunder Ork, I thought I'd have a crack at drawing one before I make a bust of it. I don't normally do a concept drawing, but hey – I wasn't going anywhere fast. So here's my first attempt with the software. It's a bit rubbish in lots of ways, but I really enjoyed it. I can see myself having a crack at this again.
Another interesting feature is that the app 'watches' what you do as you make an image, and records it automatically as a timelapse video. Pretty cool. So if you want to see the various cockups/steps I went through to make our Full Metl Orky friend, let me know and I'll upload a video of it.
