bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Thanks guys.

Nope, it's not a tree...

here's the next stage - I'm trying out miliput as a stiffer base to make him stronger. The jury is still out...

then a bit of shaping. As you can see he's becoming a wrinkly big nosed wizard (or witch, I haven't decided yet).

then worked up the folds in the robe and the face. The top arm will have a wand in it, for that overhead wand curse technique. Unless it becomes a witch. Or maybe a goblin?

so, yep - another bust. But I wanted to try out a more dynamic pose. Let's see if it works!

Sakes alive, way to get back in the saddle, Dazz. That looks great!
Are you still using Fimo/Sculpey? How are you getting such nice smooth surfaces after rough molding? Are you using water alone or rubbing alcohol to smooth the "gubbins"? Something else? What is a "gubbin"?

Blimey, that's a lot of questions! Let's see...

yep, still using super sculpey (the grey stuff). The yellow is miliput - it's like green stuff but dries much harder. I'm struggling with my models breaking while I work on them (I'm a clumsy, fat fingered sort), so I'm hoping this will work better as a framework.

The he smoothness comes from baby oil (weirdly). Works a treat on sculpey - but you have to be careful, if you bake with it still on it can wipe away the details.

A gubbins is a quaint old British term for paraphernalia, stuff, things. A lovely word, gubbins. I keep thinking I'll do a goblin carrying loads of stuff around and call him gubbins.

Anyway, last bit today: I roughed out the hand in miliput (as a frame, mainly, that's why the fingers aren't detailed). Had loads left over so made a first attempt at a hat. It will need a brim. Not sure if it looks too silly at the mo.

Thanks for the great tips. I will definitely incorporate 'gubbins' into my vocabulary. So can I use it as I did, to mean the little fuzzies created by shaping Sculpey? I'm using it, either way, I'd just like to avoid obvious malapropisms. Good word, 'gubbins'.
Love those fingers, rough as they are. Very expressive.
Personally, I'd aim for a slightly more comic style of wizard hat. The exaggeration of the facial features suggests the hat would be more (ridiculous) Rincewind than (heroic) Harry Potter. Just my two cents. Keep up the good work!

If you're using Milliputt or probably more appropriately any sort of Sculpey product, baby wipes used really really really gently across the surface will give you a super smooth finish. OR you can use a large soft bristle brush, wiping that across it will also create a really smooth finish.

Thanks Saint, eyeayen: good suggestions all.

I've done the hand (phew!) and roughed the other arm in for dimensions. I've also corkscrewed the hat to lean it more forwards and to the side for comedy value. It's still rough where the brim will go though. Other hand next! (Beginning to regret this.)

He is confusing my feelings. I can easily see where your going with him and he looks good. I can picture the want and a hat, but at this point when I look at him I keep seeing Gargamel off the smurfs.

Great sculpting, with the other comments all I can now see is Gargamel doing a flamenco. That aside once you finish your vision will become clear, keep at it

Ha! Yep, can totally see Gargamel in him. Either that or a flamenco Jean-Luc Picard.

I've to try a beard on him, so maybe that will help?

Gargamel or not, he's looking great.
I would not hide too much of the excellent work you've done under a big beard (though I support beards, the bigger the better, in general). He seems a bit fussy, like someone who would wear affected, carefully-styled facial hair of some sort rather than a big old Hagrid mane.

Thanks Saint. I agree about the fussiness, so I've tried a quite trim beard rather than the full nest. Here he is with wand, hat, and beard - none are baked, so easy enough to remove if they're not right. The wand especially is just for placement - and I'm torn as to whether I neaten the bottom of the hat, or add a brim.

This is a downright cool, fresh, new, and innovative sculpt that is a breath of fresh air....great dynamics on this sculpt. Really astonishing and well sculpted as well.

Looking good, on the hat I would neaten the edge rather than a brim as it looks like it's floating rather than sitting on his head. With the wand you could add texture and make it look like a piece of gnarled wood, if you want a straight cylinder wand may be easier to use a piece of plastic rod

Right then, barring a bit of tidying up here and there, here he is. bit of fun and quite different for me, and good hand practice too.

While I figure out the next thing, I thought I'd mess about with a little figure. He's only very rough while I get the proportions right.

I think he might become a fat executioner type, but we'll see.
