Ok, I\'ve gone back and read the entire thread and something has occurred to me. Mr Ax, you seem to be somewhat biased againts fantasy/wargaming minis. Not a problem. We all have likes and dislikes. But it seems to me that you are showing an utter lack of respect for people with great talent who paint commission work for others. Why? Most people don\'t have the time/talent to paint their own stuff. Considering the hours spent doing the work a commission as a rule ends up costing less than it should, particularly for armies. And the cost of individual minis that go up in the $100\'s? Those are some of the best ARTISTS in the mini painting world. If they painted \"acceptable\" forms of art like canvases those would be selling for 10\'s of thousands of $\'s. If I had the cash I\'d collect them like others here do. I aspire to be one of those people some day. I\'m a mid-range painter tho\' so it a dream at this point.

The thing is, you may want to look at YOUR motivations for slamming mini painters and the people who pay for their work BEFORE you rake them over the coals.

Now I\'m going to the freabar and grabbing a boy or two. Anyone want to join me?

rosac, when you guys are older (its a matter of perspective) you will understnad what i mean.
even spending your own money, its the same sort of thing.
100% of your money is disposable. you dont have to spend any money on food, rent, car, gas, commute, cable, and all the other crap. i make no doubt a lot more than you. its just how that works(and someday i hope you can make more than me so dont worry i am not disparaging you) but i can not spend all my pay check on figures.
and throw a wife in the mix(and trust me in most marriages she is going to have final say on how you spend the money you make) and kids you will find that even if you have the money to spend on the most bad ass mini, you cant because there are a thousand other things you do not want to spend money on but have to
so most game companies count of younger audiences to make money because more of their money is \"disposable\"
i am not steroe typing, i am stating an economic fact.
again i do sales for financial media, at this point i sleep, eat and shit finances and economics(its DULL too) so i understand this a bit

i am soryy when did i \"slam\" miniature painters. i am pretty sure i said \"i have a lot of respect for you for doing something i am afraid to do\"
that doesnt sound like slamming them. i made a joke(clearly labeled it as such to AVOID everyone freaking out. fat lot of good that did, wasnt I told to grow a thick skin? wow!)
so i dont see it as such.

and a bias against fantasy. no not at all. there are many fantasy and sci fi figures i think are great. most of hasslefrees catalog is great, so is bronze age miniatures, and on the GW front i think thier LOTR minis are the best fantasy figs out there(a bit expensive at $10 per main character figure. and given that a pack of basic infantry troops is 12 bucks(4 bucks per guy) it seems like there might just be a marketing ploy going on there, since you HAVE to buy the expensive guys to have any kind of army and well who wouldnt want a bad ass looking aragorn or what not if that is what you are into..am i right? or am i wrong on the pricing? and thier thought on this..remember i do sales and marketing)

i know about the bias against us from the \"traditional\" artist. that is true and when i tell people i \"paint\" they assume i mean canvas, and are quite crestfallen when i explain its \"little toy soldiers\" i dont have a problem with it, and you guys need not to worry too much about me respecting you or not, you respect your self? then no worries.
and i do respect these guys, it says so on the last page.

Hmm, yes, but consider also that even minimum wage is usually much more then we get, or earn, and for a decent job, it would in most cases even out to about the same. And, even if you were stating an economic \"fact\", the manner in which you did so was rather distastefull.

Learning from history.

I\'m in a pretty good mood, so I guess it\'s okay to make my five hundredth and something post here. Mind you, the good Aussie Red wine\'s put my mind in a kinda, should I bother typing this stuff of just whip out my Fender Telecaster frame of mind. Sorry Tele!!!

This site seems to be more fantasy miniature oriented. In that, most of the minis put up for vote on fall under this category. Although, anyone who\'s frequented this site for a fairly lengthy duration of time knows that there\'s a real true respect \'round here for good historical painting. Many past threads have discussed and shared sentiments that praise, admire and look to learn from the historical mini painting milieu. (forgive that awkward use of English. I\'m feeling the grapes.) There\'s a hybrid (darn I hate that word) and amalgamation (there we go) of both historical and fantasy mini painting that has surfaced. Look at Automaton\'s stuff etc... And I believe this is vice versa. It\'s also true that many of the great historical painters draw from fantasy GW style painting and sculpting to produce outstanding works of art. Just looks at Phillipes awesome painting and Adrian Bay\'s godlike works. I mean... I could rock over to some of the more military style mini painting websites and argue that there\'s a bias towards fantasy painting. It\'s a frivolous argument really. Painters try to emulate what they\'re in to. And regardless of their inspirations etc, it generally always winds up taking on an entirely new form owing to the individuality of the painter.

To be completely honest. Whether it\'s under the historical or fantasy pigeon holed category I don\'t give a toss. Cool mini or not. If it\'s cool. It\'s c00l! Doesn\'t really make any difference what genre it\'s coming from.

Right! Where\'s that tele of mine?

what?! hes got a point you should have seen me at 16. shit i still pay for them today. 200 an hour for a porn star quality girl. and no offense to any of the guys who sell painted minis, id rather pay that much for a painted lady anyday.

however what bill thinks it explains is beyond me. i do get laid regularly so what ever its all good.

besides the cheap shots like that never carry much weight and i am pretty sure bill isnt trying to be too malicious
besides i am pretty sure if bill and i sat around and had \"what was the craziest thing you saw a girl do\" i am going to win hands down. unless he has been to tijuanna and seen a donkey show or something. then he would have me beat.

by the way if you are going to be getting these kinds of girls, watch out for adams apples. just a heads up.

(see i have a sense of humour, you cant take what i say too seriously and nothing is off limits, not even me)

Hahaha... Oh, I can\'t control my laughter. A true Jerry Seinfeld. In poor taste if you ask me. Isn\'t trying to be too malicious. So there\'s a trace of maliciousness in there? I think Bill not only has a talent for arts and the natural sciences, but also, has a talent for psychology. Spot on Bill! We\'ve got a regular Dr. Tony Hill in our midst.

fair nuff maybe i was a bit harsh, but my first response was going to be something about not talking to people under 18 as their opinions dont matter. but i thought that would be really rude, and i dont actually think that anyway , so no worries

while it might equal out to the same amount of money, once you have more on your plate in the RED side of the ledger you will start to spend your money more carefully. you start to think a bit more about what you need as opposed to what you want. and if you NEED to buy a figure that bad, well i am pretty sure that most of will agree there is a problem. (i know i have WANTED figures so bad i thought i needed them, but i didnt get them and i am not dead nor has my life been the worse for it)

trust me this is one of those things that when i was 16, i would have been right there with you vilifying me and saying i dont know what i am talking about. but i was there and now i am here and i know just how messed up my(and my peers) priorities were. trust me when i say this(and god i hate saying it) when you are my age(do i sound old yet) you will so understand what i am talking about. you cant yet because you arent at that point in life(you lucky little bastards)

ill explain what i mean like this. right now if i could change places with you and be 12-17 years old again. i would jump at it, even going to high school again. and i would bet that you cant wait to be grown up. its a human paradox. grass is always greener and all that. i marvel at it even now in myself. its why adults always say \"these are the best years of your life\" i didnt beleive it or understand it then, when i was living them. i so get it now

Chill out, people! I think Mr Bad Example has been conducting himself in an altogether respectful manner. The only thing he\'s said that was pushing it was what Mike reacted to, but that was a joke and clearly labeled as such. And, furthermore, the joke wasn\'t directed at teenagers, but at people selling expensive painted miniatures to teenagers. So if anyone should take offence it\'s commission painters who sold stuff to underage customers.

I think the topic of this thread is interesting and it\'s sad that it\'s derailed once again. First the thread derailed into yet another GW thread. Then when Mr Bad Example tried to put the discussion back on track it\'s turned into this pointless bickering. I suggest we either focus on the original topic or let this thread rest.

i keep it alive in hopes to see more stuff like that really cool higlander \"statue\" figure that was posted on page 1. that thing is so cool and it was to that end, to see more creative historical themed stuff that i brought this up.
i never meant to complain about GW(besides i obviously dont need to start doing that, it looks like its going to happen on its own)
and i think my original post was in good nature, i never wanted higher scores for my minis, and am very content with the ones i get. my figs are table top, hard wearing wargames figs, and they fall into those numbers. i dont think i will ever get a 10(and i am so ok with that. my figs get a lot of attention and when i am not up against professionals i win my fair share of painting contests) so i am comfortable with my stuff.
anyway thanks man glad someone else understands i am not trying to be provocative(well ok a bit but not in a bad way) and just promoting good conversation.
anyway i guess the thread can die if we are all done beating me up. if you want i can start a \"dump on mr bad example\" thread, but the moderators have to promise never to go in there. i woudnt want people getting booted from the site for something that i think is kinda funny anyway
