Another method I\'ve learnt from the historical painters is to base coat with a mix of black and very dark brown. Use pure black, and possibly purple glazes, to shade it. Then, mix the base colour with a basic skin tone for highlighting. Just go easy with the highlights, or the result will not be \"black\" enough. This gives a worn, natural looking black.

It\'s a mini painted by the extremely talented historical painter Danilo Cartacci. It gives you a good idea of how the method I described can look if it\'s done well enough.
