Basically you\'d be better off mixing a dark grey out of Chaos Black, Codex Grey and a touch of Bleached bone and using that as you base coat.
To that you can work the shadows in using Chaos Black and then ease up the highlights by adding more Bleached Bone to the mix

Another method I\'ve learnt from the historical painters is to base coat with a mix of black and very dark brown. Use pure black, and possibly purple glazes, to shade it. Then, mix the base colour with a basic skin tone for highlighting. Just go easy with the highlights, or the result will not be \"black\" enough. This gives a worn, natural looking black.

If you search this forum section for \"black\" you may find an example picture I\'ve posted when this question came up before. It\'s a mini painted by the extremely talented historical painter Danilo Cartacci. It gives you a good idea of how the method I described can look if it\'s done well enough. :)

on the subject of black paints. Personally i would use Vallejeo Black. it goes down easier and is a \"deeper\" black if u know what i mean. its a nicer consistancy than chaos black. as in my experience sometimes chaos black can have a slight sheen to it. maybe im mixing wrong :p

I agree with Rolling Thunder in that the Vallejo Black is a better colour simply because it drys to more of a Matt appearance thereby enhancing the visual effect of a deeper black.

Ritual\'sComments about tonal shading are true , the human eye/brain interprets some colours as being darker due to the tonal shift. Purple washes/glazes often are used as one of these \"Tricks\".

here\'s a little recipe i mixed up last week, to try and expand my palette a little...

these are all P3 paints...
basecoat: thamar black
1st layer: coal black
2nd layer: armor wash(clean up with coal black after)
3rd layer: coal black and greatcoat grey 50/50mix
4th layer: add a little underbelly blue to the previous mix

the greys and blues enhance the black shadows nicely, without overpowering them...

cheers

Just to add that the black paint edited by Rackham is a great one to make shadows. I think that it\'s even matter than the Vallejo paint.

I was not a huge fan of Rackham colors, but I had to admit that they are great for the shadows. Browns and blacks, especially.
