Blight Drone WIP

Having seen GW Forge Worlds cool Blight Drone model, I was inspired to have a go at sculpting my own. The idea was to make one in the space of a week, taking photos along the way to post as a WIP thread on this fine website.

As tends to happen with my intended speed sculpting exercises, my obsessive / perfectionist / afraid to commit habits take over... So, several weeks down the line, here I am, yet another half finished sculpt on the shelf! Anyway, this thread will hopefully encourage me to speed up with this project.

Where my sculpts tend to fall down is the lack of planning and preparation. With this in mind, I started with a few sketches: studies of the existing model and doodles of some ideas of my own.

Although I liked the idea of trailing tentacles to disguise the vertical stand for the model, it didn\'t go ahead, although I can\'t quite remember why?! This WIP montage shows my progress so far:

The gun was constructed from numerous lengths of plastic tubing and the rest sculpted from Kneadatite green and brown and Procreate putty (grey). I\'ve since added more work to the body and engines. Hopefully I\'ll update with more photos in the week.

I also have a big collection of Nurgle Plague Marine sculpts I\'ve been working on. I hope to add a big WIP thread combining these soon. Comments etc welcome :)

Wow! Our drawing style is very similar.

Anyway It looks good so far. It looks considerably smaller than the forge world one though.

Okay, it's been quite a while since I've worked on this mini (moving house, new job, etc etc...), but I've managed to find some time this week. The main body of the propellor assembly is complete and I've started adding more vents and tubing to the Drones body.

I used a home made texture stamp to add a corroded impression to the propellor bodies. My next job will be to apply this same texture to the armour plated shell of the Drone. I'm enjoying this sculpt so far and am looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I welcome your thoughts and suggestions :)

Cheers. Good point about the helmet: the FW ones are much longer and more menacing as a result. Keep the suggestions flowing :)

I've done some work on the helmet. I used a wide needle as a rivet stamp, although I'm not so sure at how well the photos capture this.

That's an odd name indeed. :) Somehow more fitting though, in a rather disturbing kind of way; Grandfather Nurgle + Mary Rose = Yummy goodness.... :O

As I'm on holiday in London Tuesday til Friday (I'm going to watch Third Eye Blind, hurray!) here's a token update.

The left hand side of pipes are now sculpted and (learning from the floppy green stuggles I endured sculpting the helmet...) I've greened some supports for the subsequent armour plates. Apologies, the photos don't display this too well.

Unfortunately I still see much work to be done! I have the tubing connections between the propellor assemblies and drone body; the remaining armour plate segments; the body texture; the tip of the tail and finally the base! I'm sure I'll be tempted to add further pipework etc too. I'm still debating how to finish the base. There have been some great ideas knocking around the WIP threads so I'm sure to pinch something good ;-)

I've only had a brief sculpt today. As I'm running low on green stuff (ebay here I come...) I bought some Miliput fine to mix with my existing green. I've sculpted the next armour segment but left it there as Miliput is a bit too sticky for my liking. In future I think I'll leave Miliput for bulking out large minis...
