Blood Raven army log

Ok well Jericho and electrolito have their Dark Angel logs I figured I might as well throw my hat in to ring as well. After playing more Dawn of War than one ever should (and still suck at it) I decided to start up a Blood Raven space marine army. Love the fluff behind them, and I really enjoy my painting reds so I figured it was the best possible army to do. Ok. So along with making a Blood Raven army I also decided that I would do it entirely out of plastic (other than guitar wire and what not in conversions). So I haven\'t quite finished the army list yet, so I havent built all my squads so here\'s some of the things I will be including \"for sure\".

Veterans (these 5 for sure, possibly another 5 that could also be used as a smaller tactical squad instead...) Still some conversion work to be done, as well as cleaning up the models.

I will also be posting progress on my Librarian as I get more done later today (hoping to finish him off soon)...

OK. FINALLY. Got some paint out. Did a little freehand.

Now I\'m at a bit of a dilemma. I cant decide on colours for the bolt pistol casing or the force weapon shaft and power source... He is a Blood Raven so I thought maybe red for the casing and power source but then realistically all my Blood Ravens would have the same equipment and I\'m just not sure that much red is a good idea... So ANY ideas would be hugely appreciated. Thanks for looking.

he looks really good. your blending looks very smooth and your reds are great.

bolt pistol casing: vivid red
staff handle: green marble
power source: hazard stripes

Where\'s the librarians head from? It\'s spot on for Isador. I\'m liking the blue but unfortunately I can\'t comment on the red by reason of not being able to see it (see my pathetic attempts at blood ravens in \"can I borrow someones eyes\") lol
The dread is also very well done as it took a second look to realise it wasn\'t a forgeworld job. The only change I would make is to put something else under the librarians left foot as he\'s looking a little perched with the right foot raised too. Other than that I can\'t fault it so far:yes:

The head is converted from the command squad sergeant\'s head. Here\'s a pic pre-painting:

Your Blood Raven looked pretty good if I remember right. Nice dark reds, if a little rough (but hey that suits the dark gritty 40k atmosphere).

Well I did a little more work. I got the book painted, just needs script now. I\'m really not happy with the script on the tabard... It\'s just not doing it for me. The purity seals script is so much better (I did it nearly 2 weeks ago) and I just can\'t recreate that quality... So anyways here\'s where he stands. Still looking for suggestions on th weapons. Thanks for looking.

Your librarian conversion is similar to the librarian I still have unfinished (Forever lingering in WIP) lol

I did his force weapon shaft as a glossy dark green marble, and it looks quite good - have a look for yourself:

Although I\'m feelin I should really have a go at sculpting on some of those horned skulls on my fella... Hmm... :s lol

Looks good Dan. I like the marbled staff but I\'m not sure it\'d look good on mine. Looks like we used quite a few of the same bits. As for sculpting the horned skulls its really not that hard. I used a press mold for the skull (dont tell anyone ;)) and the horns are actually easy once you get the hang of them, just roll out a sausage stick in it place (i put a tiny dab of glue where I want them) and then once its cured a little score the lines in with a knife or scultping tool.

No metal bits eh? Next thing you\'re gonna tell me is that you\'re painting with one hand tied behind your back, upside-down, while bungee jumping down the Grand Canyon ;)

OK maybe that\'s a bit of an exaggeration, but it\'s an ambitious undertaking for sure. And it is fun to do something different like that... for example my Ravenwing models are all gonna have way too much unnecessary modification to their bikes, like swapping out the bolters for new ones (incredibly tedious since I need to graft on the old ammo feeds to the new guns) and hacking away most of the footrest kinda things. Footpegs will look funny but I still plan on cleaning them up, the big plate under their feet never sat well with me. Oh and the Sergeants will have de-Chaosified Chaos bikes for variety. The front forks, engine and exhaust look totally different, even the tank is a slightly different shape. Should be pretty groovy, even if it\'s a metric crapton of work that no one (except maybe electrolito) will ever notice!

@Jericho: Yep. Plastic bits, green stuff, and plasticard only. With the new plastic devastators it seems lot more doable thats for sure. I tried converting some heavy bolters but it was a lot more difficult than I had thought. Now I just need to pick up some of those heavy bolter sprues...

great stuff. is it me or does he look a bit like bruce willis?
I\'ve had a couple people notice that as well. I saw it more before I painted the face but it\'s definitely still there.

Hey cool! I have a fledgling BR force as well, mostly in pieces in a bin. I wonder how many Blood Raven armies were created because of DoW....

Command squad and Librarian look great! I would have gone with the heavy flamer on the dreadnought, only because that\'s what the game uses.
EDIT: wait a minute... that is the heavy flamer, isn\'t it? :drunk:

I look forward to more!

Hehe I think *every* Blood Ravens army was done because of the game, directly or otherwise ;)

Anyway your Dread should be awesome when it\'s done. Nice conversion, at first I was like \"Forgeworld never did one like that did they?\"

The dread still has some conversion work in store for it, as well as gap filling and other clean up... Aiming for a Conflict large model entry with it.

Ok. Little librarian update. Added the scrolls (hopefully securely... dont want them to fall off). So he\'s finally completely assmebled, he just needs to get completely painted. I\'ve decided to do a red bolt pistol casing but the other colours are still up in the air. Oh. And I hate gems. Hate.

I think they\'re a ton of fun! Easy to do and they add a lot of contrast to the model if done right. My trick is to leave about half the gem black, and start out subtle on the opposite corner before finishing with the last couple hilights being relatively stark.

Ok. Got started on the dread. This is my first time doing the multiple layer/multiple glaze technique for metallics. It\'s looking really good i think, and I havent even progressed passed boltgun yet. I\'m hoping to have this guy done for a competition April 1st, as well as my veteran sergeant, and possibly and ogre model if I can get my hands on one.

I\'ve set aside lots of painting time today so I\'ll probably be sparatically updating throughout the day. I hope to get my librarian done today as well.

Thanks for looking. Comments and all that welcome and appreciated.
