Max-That wasn't intended to bash WAMP at all.
didn't think it was a bash. I'm just constantly surprisd that forums that collect painters from all over the world have so few active threads.
Even here I'd say there is 15, max 20 active wips and similar threads (a bit more with the AQ, WoK, Z gaming threads), which considering the population of the earth is extremely small.

And now you write that the other big painting site I know is even more sparse... sad. :(

back to your figure: I think bone could work, they could have attached it to the other plates with rivets. Or you could paint it up as a blueish (gold is orange, so about ok as a complement) magical metal or even some senmm chrome.
Nah, not the last one (chrome), wouldn't fit the rest of the figure.

edit: also you can paint at least 2 kinds of bone.
one the usual bonewhite, light color, the other is the age-old dark brown one (similar to this dinosaur skull: http://i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/396160004/animal_skull.jpg )

Hmmm...afraid that if I went too brown it would get lost in my already very warm and unsaturated gold. I almost feel like strong saturation is in order here, to make a focal point of the shoulder maybe, or at least to help draw the viewer to the face. I actually didn't think of chrome, and think that this could look very good if the SENMM utilizes a grayish blue sky, but the problem is this surface is about as challenging a surface as one can use for establishing horizon line. Not saying I CAN'T do it, I just need a strong reason to try.

But yup, WAMP needs some life support. Agree that participation isn't quite what it could be here and elsewhere, but I think a lot of people read the forums without commenting. One has only to look at the number of views on threads like skelletetS. Cheers Maxx!!!!

I like the level of activity here. Too much and I feel overwhelmed, the pace here is perfect to my taste. And yeah, we seem to have a lot of lurkers.

BFoK - I've just placed a decent sized order with Scale75. I ordered a couple of their tajmyr size 1's. When they eventually arrive, I'll let you know and I can pop one in the post for you. Bit of a wait as will have to travel from Spain to Australia to USA, but if you can wait there is a brush for you :)

YES YES YES YES!!!! Cannot tell you how bad I've wanted one, but didn't wanna pay the exorbitant fee of $30 for shipping. Let me know when you have them and I will PayPal you for all associated costs-surely shipping will be cheaper through you... Cannot wait to try one out. Tajmyr is from a village in Siberian where the furs were originally harvested. Only the males, so apparently this is the authentic bees knees, the stuff that Her Majesty commissioned back when

Super excited to show off a big surprise. If any of you have ever surfed the articles here on CMoN, you may have come across a few particularly well-written tutorials by a man named Automaton. This fella, Sebastian Archer, sculpts and paints for an absolutely gorgeous line of minis that I am sure you've heard of: Guild of Harmony. His tutorials here and gallery at the GoH page have taught me so much about color theory and other intermediate to advanced level skills.

You may have heard that he has teamed up with some other experts in the field to create the Twisted game, which is slated to be an exceptional Steampunk game with an Oliver Twist (pun!) The first minis are slowly being released over time, with two awesome Limited Edition resin minis became available just recently. Check here for details on these two new releases: http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/twisted-launched-first-steampunk-characters-released.70325/

However, I have had the distinct honor of receiving some of the minis "Pre-Release!" That's right! Mr. Archer was kind enough to send me some of the figures before they are available to the general public. I can't tell you how excited I have been to get my hands on these!! You'll be able to buy Launcelot, the figure I have prepped below, very soon. He has shared many of the first minis to be released from the range in the coming months, and I must say, get excited because they are something special.

So, without further ado, I bring you the first public pic (as far as I've seen) of Launcelot from Demented Games:

Right!! I am very loosely considering TMM. While I could obviously do best with NMM, I feel like Steampunk sometimes looks better with metallics. But yes, the safe route is NMM. I would definitely include copper, gold, and steel on this one mini. I am sort of at a loss for how to approach it from a color theory standpoint.

Well for NMM vs TMM, take a look at Sproket and Megazord's work on infamy's stuff. Sproket did some awesome weathered NMM on the ape and uncle Tom bust, Megazord does super TMM on Toad and Alucard. Plenty of steampunky inspiration there. Given the theme for this line, Oliver Twist, I think a gritty look would be very fitting.

Per usual B, you read my mind on all of this stuff. John Keys and David Soper are exactly who I planned on seeing for inspiration. I learned my copper NMM from Sprocket's Chee Chee. And of course MM's TMM on numerous Steampunk projects is amazing. I'd definitely go TMM if I had the confidence....hmmm....tough call for me.

Thinking of saturated garments next to unsaturated metals.

And I even considered sky earth. With his metal jacket, it's kind of like banded mail with strips of metal. That is a ton of horizon lines to do on those tiny bands on a tiny 25mm...though it would look pretty cool, especially on his arms. Now I am even more confused. :)

I'm glad you picked up Lancealot, Seb's sculpting on him is superb.
As to the painting, well I can only point you to trying to find "Ripper Street" on YouTube for great examples of Victorian dress applicable to Steampunk. Series isn't bad either.
I'm aiming to paint one of my "Twisted" figures for Euro-Militaire.

Ooooooh thats a lovely mini :)

It is. DR and Bailey got in on the pre-releases too, so keep an eye out for some additional lovely ones from them. This particular mini is set to be released next month.

So, inspired by you Stefan, as well as Megazord and Bailey and others, I'd like this one to be a bit darker to fit the Oliver Twist theme. As such, I don't feel like I am good at doing dark steel and similar grimey feels with NMM. So consider this a test piece, my first real attempt at TMM. Need C&C please, and if everyone thinks this is ok, come back in about 24 hours to see how it looks in other areas. Thanks!!!

PS-Obviously TMM can be difficult to photograph. This is the most flattering angle I could find. The dark areas were actually done with a series of glazes, going from a red brown to a dark yellow black. Had trouble getting that to show up though, so I stuck with this angle. Metallics are Scalecolour.

Looks nice, I like the rust. Picture is a bit blurry, so I have a hard time telling how you placed the highlights, but unless the picture is concealing something this is a great start.

That's such a nice figure BF , i like the way your heading with it , it wouldn't look as good(IMO)as NMM .Also , if he is to be slightly rusty his jacket and hat may look good a little beat up and filthy , maybe a bit greasy....?

Thanks fellers. To be honest, I didn't really intend to make it appear rusty, it's just that I guess my glazes with dark flesh may have gotten a bit out of hand. Easy fix tho, I'll just glaze my metallic base over them until they disappear. I guess it looks like rust because I tried to shade some cracks and similar areas with the tone, which if not applied carefully can look like weathering.

i am pretty happy with my final highlights of SC speed ball metal plus white alchemy. The latter is Scale75s metallic medium, which can be added to any metal to lighten them. I did this, and then used a series to tiny brush strokes, little millimeter sized lines placed horizontally, and it gives it a sort of brushed metal look.

I may or may not try something else on the other arm. In the Scalecolour metallic set there is a black metal that is just awesome. Very dark steel but with high pigmentation. Many TMM wizards start with this and simply lighten in key areas, and then add a couple colored glazes. As a matter of fact, I will paint his rifle this way, and I'll let you guys tell me what you think of this alternate method.
