BloodFather's Axis of Chaos

Thanks Pariah!

Just prepped this dude. Will not truly start him until complete with some other projects. But just look at the detail on this mount: begging for some paint.

Yeah, great looking sculpt. I know you want to finish up other stuff first, but it's going to be tough to wait on this one. Have you come up with a plan for what colors you want to use on the mount?

I have literally been wracking my brains over it for days now, Bailey. Thought about basing it with GW Syrabite Green. This is a minty sort of green, and more towards his spine, or higher up I could use GW Warpstine Glow, which is pretty much standard green. Then towards his underbelly I add white to the Syrabite. Shade and tiny with red, yellow, and orange glazes in appropriate areas. Like the loose skin where his throat is-that would either just be white or maybe yellowish...not quite sure.

One thing I noticed from watching Karol Rudyk's tutorial of sorts on his dinosaur. He uses this net to trace a pattern on the lizard's skin. But in true Rudyk fashion, the picture contains no explanation, so I am not quite sure what I am looking at. You can find this on his FB page. While I don't have to use this method, it does leave a pretty nice pattern. Someone said it is some type of Lichen. Any tips or ideas yourself, Mr Bailey?View attachment 44853View attachment 44854View attachment 44855

I should also add that I wanted to use either bronze with verdigris on his metal plates. OR paint it in a chrome pattern. Not neccessarily SENMM but with blacks and white forming wierd shapes, etc and a little color reflected from the scene.

I'm sure Karol wouldn't mind if you asked him over face book . It looks to me like a dried sea weed , have a look in the haberdashery section in a material shop some laces and doily looking stuff can be good even if you cut sections to make it look more random .

I'm with WGS in his assessment of the "net".

There are some sea fans available from this site that look promising.

Neat little source there. Not sure if I will use them or not for the effect, but that Black Sea Whip sure does look promising for base work. Could use the whole thing as a bush/tree, or smaller sections to represent vines or other dried veg. Thanks for the link! Ordered!!

Edit: Nvm $70, yikes! I have an ocean nearby and the red tide has recently killed literally everything in the sea. The stuff washing ashore right now is pretty incredible. May have to take the wife on a "date" tomorrow along the shore.

I just got the impression that he couldn't read based on his wordless tutorials :)

The more I think on it, fellas, the more I don't think I could even use this technique effectively. I've no air brush :( Besides, why couldn't I just freehand it if I wanted to? I think I use the pattern, but in select places like his face.

You can probably create your own from masking tape. I was just remembering the hex pattern from the HUSH tutorial. You could do something similar, but by cutting irregular shapes. It's more labor intensive, but I think it'd work with a regular brush too. Of course there's no need to use this approach at all, I'd probably just paint it like normal without a stencil.

As for the colors, that sounds good. I think the important part is to get the color variation in there. Lighter on the belly and darker on the spine is a good scheme. Spots, stripes, etc can be interesting, though I would keep them subtle and not over do it. Check out images of real lizard for more ideas. You could even go for more of a red or purple main color (could be nice next to the bronze armor), though nothing wrong with green if that's what you prefer. Consider the armor and what colors you plan for the rider, then pick what you think would work well with all of that.

Very much agree, Bails. Actually was considering purple too, just not sure how Barney-like it'll make him appear :)

In the meantime, I painted another layer on a long sitting project. My wife's grandmother, rest her soul. I am painting her from a photo taken in the 1950s. I am using the Flemish technique, so it is many layered. First I painted the imprimatura, or basically the tinted background you can see. Then I use burnt umber, diluting it with turp for the lightest shades, pure for the darkest areas. This sets a background of warm shadows in. Next, I will use 8 shades of black to white for a grisaille. For this I will mix in linseed oil with my turp. This helps blend it all together and makes the paint nice and buttery. I will make my black by mixing brown and blue, I think, to contrast with the warm umber underneath. Anyway, here we go. Looks better irl.

By the way, if I can offer one piece of advice for people who have sort of plateaued in their skill with mini painting, and want to take it to the next level by increasing their understanding of color theory, values, composition, etc I highly reccomend starting a wetcanvas.com account. A huge community of artists, from sculptors to painters of all media, this place is rockin and so very helpful. Check out their fantasy and Sci Fi sections for some heavy inspiration. If you want to learn oils, hang out here.

Canvas looks great - really cool start.

For or the patterned scaly hide I would guess the artist used an airbrush. You can replicate it (much more slowly) with freehand, or maybe paint thin lines of masking fluid and wash over it?

I've painted canvases with acrylics before (buried in the depths of my WIP somewhere) and dabbled with some watercolours, but I don't have the space to store drying oil paintings so I've never tried.

I haven't been a fan of ANY of the new GW figs. They are just so bizarre and misshapen to me. Too many of the wrong types of details. It's like they ran out of good ideas and so now can only create abstract, silly looking models. However, I think I just found the exception to this rule. Anyone plan on painting this bad boy?
