Blu-Ray vs HD DVD war

no, PS3 can play PS2...

I don\'t know how the new players read older formats... I guess they have a 2nd laser to read them.

The only thing that isn\'t hapening is blu-ray reading hd-dvd discs.

yeah, ya still get to play all your old ps2 games on the ps3, but they look like crap...still, it\'s nice to be able to use \'em, since there is nowhere near the variety for ps3 games yet, and most people can find some great second-hand deals on old ps2 games...
i don\'t know if blue-ray disc players can play regular format dvd\'s...that would be cool...

Well, wikipedia says that both Blu-Ray and HD DVD are supposed to be backwards compatible with old DVDs.

I\'m going to stay with what I\'ve got until one format dies. Course, I\'m still planning to buy a PS3 when the next Grand Theft Auto comes out, so I guess that would lean me towards getting an HD DVD player. Then I\'d have both formats\' players and wouldn\'t care what format the DVD was in.

I sided with Blu-Ray but only due to buying a ps3.

That said i only have to Blu Rays- 300 because i could get it earlier than its dvd release.

And Casino Royale because i got it free when signing up to ps3 online.

Basically im not too bothered, though the Blu-Ray cases are better than the HD-DVD cos that red is awful

And there actually is one player out that will play all three formats - DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray -

But it does look like HD-DVD is going the way of Beta.

Blu-ray is the Mac of the new disks.
HD is expanding and evolutional.
Blu-ray is decent, but not going to get any better.

Watch that. The cheap ones don\'t. The removed the old PS2 processors on the new ones and only the more expensive models were given the PS2 emulators. Still, I haven\'t found a PS2 game mine wouldn\'t play.

I\'m not exactly a first adopter when it comes to most tech items (or porn ). When at my friend\'s house (He manages an electronics store so he has all the latest everything as soon as it comes out) I noticed that a really good HD TV shows ALL the imperfections. So if you\'re looking to take a trip to fantasy land, good old DVD may be better after all. It depends on how real you want to get

Both have DRM, so both can fail, for all I care. I have issues with computers telling me what I am and am not allowed to do in non life-threatening situations. I also have issues with being expected to buy technology that is designed to get in my way.

Then again, I only have 3 entertainment DVD\'s anyway. Even regional encoding gets up my nose.

It does look like Blu-Ray is winning the battle...but HD-DVD has been proclaimed dead several times already.

I don\'t plan on buying either until the price of players comes down....and there is NO way I am rebuying a library of movies again. I already did that once when VHS went the way of the do-do.

Netflix is the answer, and they offer both formats, as well as the standard dvd.

Analogue T.V. will be gone by 2012 here in the UK, then it will be all digital, so I\'ll have to get a new telly by then if I want to watch anything. That will probably also when I get a blu-ray or hd-dvd, whichever has won out.

Its 2009 here in the USA, Im looking at buying a small 15 inch set for my work room at the moment..its where I spend most of my time and Icurrently watch most tv on a 10 inch screen at the moment so that would be a huge jump.

so i was pluggin\' the hd cable into the ps3 today, and finally noticed the symbols on top of the console...i have the 80gig model, and it seems to play damn near every format...ps3 games, ps2 games, regular dvd\'s, cd\'s, and blue ray...not too sure about hd-dvd\'s...guess i should read the manual at some point...
by the way, ps3 games on a hdtv look incredible...the hd cable made a world of difference...

Actually Jeff here stateside you can get a box to allow you to watch Digital on your analog set - and a coupon from the government to help defer the cost.

I have a 1080i CRT television, yay for Toshiba! Got the 26\" widescreen a little over a year ago for $375. Not a bad deal at all. Until HDMI actually gets a grip on the market I don\'t want to spend a ton of money on a flat-screen with component video. Analog signals on an LCD/plasma TV can give disgusting signal noise, even at 1080p. I get no visible noise on my CRT that cost 25% as much money.

BTW my 8 year old DVD player looked better than when I put the DVD into my Xbox 360... but the Xbox is sadly better at staying cool than said old DVD player. When any electronic device can melt down faster than a \"next gen\" console that\'s a very bad sign.

Actually to help hasten the demise of the analog airwaves, and along with them, the eventual demise of free over-the-air TV. That IS a rip-off.
