Brambleten Attempts to Paint

Just about prepped for heading to Cumbria's first wargaming show tomorrow - it's at the Rheged Center, just off junction 40 on the M6 if anyone is interested.

With that in mind, everything I need to learn how to play Batman (miniature wise) fits inside my handy metal tin, with enough space to spare for me to add some other pieces to show off.

There will also be bring and buy stalls, so I've gathered a selection of duplicates and old projects (a little bit of LotR, my tau army and a few other bits) with the optimistic aim of breaking even with what I spend on the day. Either that or I intend to kickstart the areas miniature economy again after todays "interesting" Brexit shennanigans, that I'm far too tired of after the past few months to really go into.

To save ending on doom and gloom, Erishkigal arrived from Purgatory last week, and the Ant Queen (new, limited charity run from Ax Faction) and 54mm Dimension Hop Tesla (Infamy) arrived over the last couple of days.

Now to get the camera charged ready to hopefully get pictures tomorrow :)

Had an awesome day at Cumbria's first wargaming show and was able to get my Batman gang onto the board, even if I did (willingly) give over control of them to a young lad who wanted to use Batman in the demo rather than Joker or Two Face (I took Joker).

Some shots of the day that I took early on, got a bit distracted by the end.

My little haul (have since added to it with Element Games orders for stuff I had planned on buying if I saw it at the show). Got 20% off Emma and the Batmobile as well, which is great as I so far I'd resisted buying a Batmobile as it is usually only available direct from Knight in Spain, but this was left over Salute stock. Hidden away are the new GW technical soulstone paints, which are the same consistency as Blood For The Blood God.

@KruleBear - It was!

@Dragonsreach - It was organised by the West Coast Gamers gaming group and it was advertised quite heavily on Facebook in the local groups and also in groups related to games that were either on show or had tournaments. I'm not sure how much non-Facebook or out of county exposure it got though.

One of the things that really hit home yesterday was how awesome it is to see painted minis playing on boards or mats full of awesome terrain. I've got painted stuff for Batman and have a mat on the way from Kraken Wargames' kickstarter in the next few weeks, but I haven't got any Batman friendly terrain built.

So, I changed that.

Not quite Batman, but it was too cool to pass up and a nice easy start to building MDF terrain - a Stargate from Dark Ops.

I followed that this evening with the remaining street lights, which are placed by players and important to games of Batman due to the game being set at night, so being in range of a street light or lantern means that you quickly become a gunman's favourite target.

I also got a couple of billboards built. I thought these would be nice and quick, but I was wrong. The first one came together in minutes, but the latter one needed effectively recutting, where the laser hadn't gone all the way through to the last few layers of MDF.

To do all the hammering out and cutting, I finally made use of the chisel blade for my x-acto, which swiftly became my best friend for building terrain, closely followed by an emery board for quick sanding of stuff.

2 weeks, 2 complaint emails to Knight asking for replacement kit :(

I attempted to continue my terrain building exploits, but was foiled by a sheet that wasn't cut through by the laser :(

I did manage to get a second kit built though - the KM containers, which happily open and close :)

Oh, and England were shite. I could elaborate on that, but it pretty much sums it up.

thats some nice terrain ive been looking at the MDF stuff to use for necromunda. hmm pretty bad the laser cut wasnt cut through.

@SkelettetS - Cheers. The Knight terrain has been pretty poor for lasering quality since it was first put out, but has apparently improved a lot over that time. Still, the quality control isn't great, but at least their customer service department seems to be on the ball, even if it takes time for the Spanish post to get items places.

I built a few more bits and got foiled in my attempt to build more - my SWAT van joins the complaint to Knight list as integral parts weren't cut through. Not seeing a Starfire replacement in the post yet either, but I'm hoping that will be here soon.

Anyhow, here's how a 3ft board (or mat) looks with the terrain I built last week. I'm still waiting on my Kraken Wargames mat, but that's on its way from Germany as I type, so it's my GB mat for now.

Still lots of open space, but I think one of my bigger buildings that I'm yet to build - Digicore Tower from TT Combat or the Olympus building from Multiverse might do nicely along with a few more bits of scatter terrain.

Things that I haven't posted in here are the Dino Gas station and the construction terrain I salvaged from the lasered section of the not lasered Construction sheets.

The roof is removable on the store, and the forecort comes off as well for ease of storage and potential transport. And for painting.

Next up is today's work. Since Hulk got re-released on a 60mm base, I've been on the lookout for a cheap 60mm lipped base. It's hard to find 60mm lipped bases, and even harder to find ones that aren't £5-6 before postage. I picked up the only lipped base on ebay at the time (buy it now for about £3.80 inc postage). It wasn't a style I liked, but I wasn't prepared to be fussy as I need one for Hulk, seeing as mine is an old one and used to come with a 40mm base.

This is the original shown on the listing.

$_57.JPG

This is a "battlefield" base, with shells and rock and what I assume is mud. When mine arrived, it was very bubbled from dodgy casting, but since I was needing to do work on it, I thought what the hell, lets get started.

I cut off the shells as best I could then put my limited green stuff skills to work to create some rocks instead, and to fill in some of the bubbled rocks.

The only other 60mm base I have unused at the moment is for Old Grogg from the Battle for Troll Bridge set, which is a plain base, so I'll be swapping this one for the plain one. That way I can keep Hulk in the same style as my other BMG/Marvel figures, and this one now looks like it fits in a fantasy environment, maybe even a river bed under a bridge if I put some water effect in there.

The next plan for the day was to work on Hannibal, as I've been putting it off for a couple of weeks. The purple is currently at a stage I'm happy with, but I might go back to it once further parts of him are done.

There wasn't quite as much work on him as I'd have liked as I got distracted by an idea I had when I first got my Marvel game boxes. Getting the Guardians box left me with a duplicate Rocket so I decided to put him to use, fighting my way through his tactical rock, destroying a pair of clippers in the process.

13516425_1780090595611522_9162749684207923046_n.jpg

In the end though, he made it to where he belongs.

There is still a lot to do green stuff wise. He's currently stable, but I want to work some more layers into Groot's back and arms to try and keep as close to his initial design and style as possible, but showing that he's grown a platform for Rocket to work from, which is as close to the awesome prison break scene from the film as I could get it.

Diane is ready for primer now that it's July and she can be started for the combined comps of CMON's monthly comp (Heroes and Villains this month), 'Eavier Metal's 'Eadbanger 2, which also ends 31st July and the Hero section of the Fallen Frontiers group's KS release comp, which ends in October. Lots of reasons to get her done!

Oh, and I also built my norml Rocket because I had the box out and thought I may as well hit both at once.

Busy day, lots of work but not a vast amount of progress where I intended there to be progress.

Avoided painting again today, instead building more DC stuff.

AC Harley and Master of Ceremonies.

TAS Black Canary

My remaining speedsters - Kid Flash and Zoom.

You might note that all of the base putty is the same colour - I made up a larger batch than normal to level out my milliput sticks (had way more grey than yellow left and my OCDness wouldn't allow that) so made up enough to do 9 in total - here are the others.

I received my Kraken Wargames mat from their Kickstarter a couple of days ago and couldn't resist getting some minis on it to take a proper look at it.

Back to the building of stuff and my spare bases were quickly used as I fleshed out my bad guys some more.

Prisoner 04 and one of the Arkham Inmates

Black Flash and Black Manta. Both are probably more textured than they should be, but I'm going to use that and integrate it into their suit design.

My Retribution finally made it out of the box, even if it is only two models - a Houseguard Thane and Kaelyssa, Night's Whisper.

At some point I'll return to painting things, but thanks to work I've not really been in the right frame of mind to paint and don't want to ruin Hannibal by painting when not in the mood.

Forced myself into getting some paint on the brushes for the first time in a week in an effort to relocate my mojo.

He started off as a grey resin elephant, before getting a coat of grey primer, and now he's a WIP grey elephant - not a vast amount of progress despite the 3-4 hours on him so far. I'm using the same shading tones as I used on Hannibal to keep the tone similar, though as this is green going onto grey rather than purple, it's a lot lighter. I've also tried to tread the line of keeping the texture of the leathery skin before it just becomes rough painting.

Also got a couple of layers of grey onto Diane.

As if I'm not already busy enough, I might try and work up a breakdown of my non-black black technique while I paint her up across the various tones I plan on trying if Element Games decide to send me the paint sets I ordered rather than just keeping pushing the delivery date back a week.

@SaintToad - Indeed I do! I think thats part of the reason for hitting a big spell of burnout/mojo fade. There already is a form of Marvel/DC Crossover - the Spider-man miniatures stuff has a little PDF with special rules that uses the Batman rulebook so you can use them against Batman gangs or against each other. As far as the Marvel Universe Miniature Game and BMG it's unlikely, thanks to them being completely different systems - they've even changed up the unit of measurement from metric in Batman to Imperial in Marvel.

Long time (for me anway), no post!

New stuff that's arrived recently:

Replacement stuff from Knight

Stuff from the Wamp Store sale

More ScaleColor paint and some thinner ready for the airbrush that is in the house, that I'll be getting for my birthday

The Scale Color collection as it stands...

And Jean Grey. Still waiting on Nightcrawler from Asylum Wargaming, but they know they've messed up with that one and have apologised and said that they'll be sorting out a refund on him as well when he arrives so I'm not too bothered about him at the moment.

I finally put some paint on some brushes on Friday, starting with Diane Tianseen's jacket before moving on to her trousers.

I tried manipulating my cold black recipe so instead of using blue to highlight I added some greens. Still a work in progress.

Oh, I also started some of my Retribution Battle Box - white plastic is horrible. Every scrape, shave and sanding mark shows up on it.

As dynamic as the caster looks, it would be immensely more helpful if she actually had any part of a foot that could fit on the base so I could pin the damn thing without the other foot being off the base.

I think I might be getting my hobby mojo back, or at least a boost in the form of a new toy for my birthday.

Other hobby related presents - mostly stuff for the airbrush as I'd already bought a compressor but you never say no to extra gorilla glue. The black block is a fine/extra fine sanding block which I thought I'd give a go to help clean up mold lines a little smoother.

The not quite hobby but still fun stuff pile

Since I'm not airbrushing in my room, I set up out the back for a test run.

Two onlookers, not particularly enthusiastic about sharing their space.

Though as soon as the compressor started up, Jet decided that discretion was the better part of valour and moved an extra couple of meters away.

I started off just playing with water and ink before moving on to primer. I watered it down a little too much for fear of clogging the brush so it just seemed like the airbrush was just eating through paint constantly. Eventually I added a little brown ink to the primer so I could actually see where it was going, and to also create a first layer on the Unithorn.

I gave it a dusting of Deck Tan as well before firing through some chestnut ink, but that didn't give the effect I was after as instead of flowing it just coated the raised areas. I think for inks it'll be back to the brushes in future.

Also in the line of fire were the ArcWorlde Siren and some bases, showing the different levels of how much thinner I added - mostly the answer is too much!

Still, got this week off work to figure it out :)

@Zab - they aren't the most comunicative of assistants, though they have taken to completely ignoring the compressor which is a good sign for long term usage.

Yesterday I finished my first airbrush mini - no brushes at all!

It's a highly exciting pallet for BMG :)

Primed and sprayed with a couple of blues with the airbrush before using a sponge to add some bits of mud. This is a continuation of the "baby steps" approach to airbrushing and actually the first thing I've finished in ages.

I also threw some ink on the Unithorn, a variety of tones from green through to brown and black. He stil needs another few layers, glowy eyes and his base but he's come along quite quickly.

The last few days have seen me finish my Unithorn, which is the most fun I've had painting a miniature in a while. No time/comp pressures and something I've been thinking about painting for a long time. It's also down to playing with inks, which is just fun trying out the different combos in layers and mixes.

The glowing eyes didn't turn out quite as planned, but they add a nice contrast to the warm of the wood.

The base was mainly painted with washes and sponging on different shades of brown, but the use of the stone and the grass tufts links it to the other ArcWorlde gang stuff I've painted in the Halflings (Griffmas doesn't count as he doesn't have a profile ;) ).

As well as being one of the most fun pieces I've painted recently, he's also the biggest - that's a 50mm base he's rearing up from.

And it is upon this note of a painted miniature that I'll say that I'm going to be taking a break from the forum for a bit. I've been writing weekly (and more) articles for the Noobs and their paintbrush blog for roughly 20 months now so to try and find the fun in painting again I'm going to try and spend the time I would spend writing blogs and updating forums on painting instead. Not sure how long it'll last, and I'll still be around looking after the noobs and their paintbrush facebook page but for now it's time to see if it will work.
