To balance out the fact that I finished something, some crowdfunded stuff arrived!

Been waiting on these for a while (only slightly in part due to Ares Mythologic sending the first parcel of them to the wrong side of the Atlantic) and they're lovely figures. Keep an eye out on Noobs and their Paintbrush for the unboxings which should appear in the next couple of weeks.

Next, we have some ebay impulse buys.

Picked up for roughly the price of a new codex thanks to an incorrect spelling of Harlequins in both auctions, I've been thinking about these for a while. I still consider Harlequins to be the ultimate painters test. If you can pull off good looking harlequins, you're a good painter in my book.

Oh, and since I'm on my last roll of greenstuff, I picked up some more.

Do I really need 3 feet of greenstuff? Probably not all at once, but once I saw it I simply had to see exactly what 36 inches of GS looked like.

I did manage to resist unrolling it's full length, but only just.

No paint this weekend, I got a little distracted with my latest kickstarter goodies that turned up on Thursday -

DSC05602.JPG

I picked up the Ares and Sayx factions, which, between the game box and additional stuff, come to around 35-40 minis a side, all in resin. Grey is Ares, blue is Sayx.

DSC05644.JPG

The sculpts are great and for the most part flash and mold lines are non existent. The only ones to really suffer mold lines are the armoured Ares guys (of which there are a few), and they have quite heavy mold slippage on their legs.

I've got a full unboxing of the box, with far more photos than I can easily share in a post over on the blog[/img], but here are a couple of my favourites, seeing as I already have them in 75mm scale.

I was eyeing that game up a while back, I missed the ks but the models look lovely, hopefully I can get my hands on some when they hit retail

@Sicks - they are lovely, though for me the Sayx are clear winners over the Ares in a style contest. Ares were the best of the rest for me as I just didn't really feel for the other two factions.

In a first for a while, I actually got some painting done midweek and moved on from having my Gotham policeman, known to the BMG community as Fat Cop, from this (circled, pictured last in September 15)

to this across maybe 5-6 hours this week.

He's not my finest work, and it shows before I even get to the paint job - I started where I left off and didn't do any more prep, so there are areas that I should really have cleaned up more but didn't want to spend any more time stipping down and repriming a mini that is the second cheapest unit that Law Forces can take.

The part I'm happiest with is his face, I really think I've got this darker skin tone cracked, as this time it only took an hour or so, maybe less to get it right, compared to the hours on the first test model.

Here's the group I plan on taking to the local show (first wargaming show in Cumbria!) next month to test out on the demo table. 3 members down, one to go.

There is a clear difference between the two police uniforms, with Stripper Cop having a much more cartoony vibe than Fat Cop. She was painted up just before I went to the Wamp Workshop which about 9 months ago now, and as such is probably the last model I painted before things started to click into place properly.

Who's the last member of the gang? Well, this guy...

Gave the brushes a rest today, so built some unded horsies instead. And the dudes to sit on top of them.

I didn't want to go entirely gravel on them (which would match my previous undead) so added in a little milliput onto the base first, pressed it into the Imperial Basius mold and then filled in around it with gravel. Hopefully a few patches of this here and there on bigger bases will help add to them while keeping the look uniform.

Plus that's one box clear of the cupboard now, though I do now have three sprues of Black Knight pieces to put away somewhere. So probably back into the box for now, while I keep the box for reference when I paint these guys up.

While it's not unheard of for me to have thee posts in three days, it is quite unusual to have three posts in three days on three different subjects, without adding any new purchases.

I primed my Hexwraith bases, making use of my jam jars - hexagonal sides means 6 flat sides for holding bases while I spin it around and prime :)

I also spent most of the afternoon working on my Halfling Spearmen - flesh tones are mostly done, just that, hair, metals and a few mistakes to tidy up for them to be called done.

Overall it's been quite a productive weekend so far, with a Bank Holiday tomorrow as well so extra time for hobby stuff :)

Thanks KruleBear. I might add a clump of flock here and there, but they're part of a much larger force, so I don't want to pimp them out too much for fear of having to do another I don't know how many to a similar standard :) The jars are fun, I used to use them to hold the minis on while I paint them but since moving to mainly putting pins into pieces, I use one of the little PK Pro Cork holder thingies more often than not.

I've had another one of my crazy ideas.

Last week when my new BMG stuff arrived (and Silver Tower), I picked up an Eldar codex to go with my Harlequin book & box. I now fancy a nice shiny small, 1k Eldar army that looks something like this.

Farseer Skyrunner
Spiritseer

Fire Dragons with Exarch in Wave Serpent
Wraithguard (with Spiritseer) in Wave Serpent

6 Windriders
6 Windriders

That comes in at 991 points with a few mods here and there. I could go out and get it, seeing as all of the kits chosen can be freely picked up at retailers not just GW - I didn't realise that Falcons were direct only! - but I'm not going to. Apart from the Spiritseer, as I already got him with the codex.

Here's the crazy bit of the plan. Seeing as how my randomising is working, and I'm now also choosing a unit to paint if I draw a single piece, or a single piece if I draw a unit, I decided to spice that up a bit. To get me my Space Elves, I need to paint double that amount of points in Warhammer and/or 40k, using 8th (End Times)/7th ed respectively. So to get 1k of Eldar, I need to paint 2k of other stuff. If I get to various stages I might start getting boxes, but seeing as how I'm already negative despite backdating this to the start of the year, I'll need to get some work done as an incentive between projects.

So, I currently have 100 points chalked up on the board from a my Lord Commissar with Power Sword and plasma pistol. That equates to 50 points, of which I've already spent 70 on the Spiritseer. Me being behind before I've even started isn't a surprise to anyone I'm guessing :)

Oh, and ArcWorlde's starter box got shipped, so that should arrive this week with fun KS goodies as well :D

In today's news, England were shite and Roy Hodgeson spouted some utter bullshit after the game to justify not picking wingers in his squad, then playing his strikers as wingers the entire game...

Anyhow. This gave me time to clean up and build a Groot :)

He still needs some GS on his arm joins, but he's a pretty big guy.

Groot being bigger means he's on a 40mm base rather than 30mm, which let me get some use out of one of the bigger elements of my Victoriana Basius pad.

It's a little too big to fit onto a 30mm with enough detail to actually make it out, so I'm quite happy to finally get to try it. Hopefully painting it up as metallic should look good as a contrast to Groot's natural tones.

Halfling Spearmen are done!

They've been sat on my desk for a while so I made a push to finish them last night. They're a little bit rougher than the last few things that I've put time in to, but I think that's partly down to the slightly rougher old school sculpts and metal casts.

The colour scheme was kept fairly neutral to allow for the split purple/green shirts to stand out and will hopefully be the recognisable factor through the force as I paint up more of them.

To speed things up across the models, I didn't use my regular Scale Color flesh tones and shaders, usually about 8 paints in the palette, and instead went for half that many - Vallejo Basic Flesh and a couple of P3s, along with P3 Sanguine Base.

It's also the first time I've been able to play with the Army Painter grass clumps I picked up a while back, though even the smallest one looks huge against them, given their size.

I've said that they're a bit rougher, and they are, but I'm also happy with them. This is the first time in over 18 months that I've been able to paint more than a single character in the same scheme at the same time, which was something I really needed to focus some practice on if I'm to ever make a considerable dent in my collection.

In a happy coincidence, I waited long enough to finish the first warband pieces from the first Warploque Kickstarter that they were finished up only the day before the rewards for the second KS landed, which was today!

I'll throw up some more pictures next weekend when I do the unboxing for Noobs and their Paintbrush, but I picked up almost one of everything (bar a different arm choice for Grogg the troll and a t-shirt. The Bag is just the right size for the box though, and the box itself has a thick foam layer in it that you can cut into and use to house the miniatures safely when you've built them, which is pretty neat :) I went for the resin upgrade, so everything that wasn't a stretch goal mini (some sheep, hounds and a couple of halflings) is all lovely Warploque in house cast resin, which is some of the best that I've worked with.

In other news, I started on Red Hood and got pretty far.

So far I've only used paints from the Scale Color Shades of Doom set plus some GW Fenrisian Grey. The blue/black is done, but the white and red need finishing, as to the buckles, leg plates and guns.

He's one of my favourite DC characters so I'm really happy that he's turning out nicely for such a fast paintjob so far (one half of football and 2-3 episodes of Arrow).

Had a couple of days not putting paint on anything, so as a break from Jason Todd, painted up a Loot objective.

The notes are a little bit green, but I gave up on trying to get them to look like anything other than play money after 4 or 5 attempts.

Nice and simple, another thing crossed off the list.

I also added the first etchings of colour to Hannibal, if only to make it feel like I've spent time on him.

I am not familiar with the red hood mini, but the mini looks cool and you have a good start.

You may want to get in on the friendly superhero painting contest starting in July with all your superhero minis. I know they are trying to get more participation.

Thanks KruleBear.

The Red Hood is one of my favourite DC characters. He's Jason Todd, who became Robin after Dick Grayson left Bruce Wayne. Long story short, Joker captured him in Death in the Family (which is FANTASTIC) and kills him (in the full comic run there was a public vote held to see if Batman saved him or he died. People voted that he should die). Todd then gets resurrected, I believe by Talia al Ghul and becomes The Red Hood, who has his own version of justice that is usually dealt out with twin pistols. He went after Batman a few times to begin with because he didn't save him from The Joker, but in the more recent runs he works more in parralel with the Bat Family than against it, through most of the New 52 with Roy Harper (Arsenal/Speedy) and Starfire as The Outlaws, which is one of my favourite comic runs in the short time I've been reading comics.

This particular version is one of two Jason Todds from the Arkham Knight video game - in a prequel DLC mission you play as this version, but in the full game he appears as (spoiler, but it's been out a year) The Arkham Knight himself, trying to take down Batman with Scarecrow.

I'll have a look at the contest, though I've already got a commitment to painting up Hannibal by some time in July. Plenty of football on telly though (Euro16 starts tomorrow :D ) over the next month so that should keep me firmly in the painting seat for a while longer.

Got a little more done on Jason during the France game last night, with the white still needing another layer or two to smooth it out.

I added a little bit of highlight to the curve of the face plate, though I'm wary of taking it too much brighter.

I also got some more paint on Hannibal. This is Hastur Purple from the Creatures of Hell Fantasy & Games set from Scale Color, and I have no idea where I'm going with it. Nice colour though!

Today I put up an unboxing of the new ArcWorlde starter set and the KS goodies that came with it on Noobs and their Paintbrush here, but here are a few of my highlights from the box.

I only got half my planned work done this evening, but that half was to finish off and varnish The Red Hood, so that's a job well done. I've tried to stick to the scheme, choosing muted dark tones to balance against the white and of course, the red hood.

I deliberately didn't put much in the way of a highlight on the guns, thinking that he might go for a matt finish which wouldn't give off much shine if he was after the stealthy approach.

And with Red Hood finished, I can show off the full finished gang!

OK, so I've still got a couple of objectives to paint up to take with me to the show, but I'm fine if I don't get them finished. The key for me was to get the 200 rep gang done, and they are. The second half of this evening was supposed to be painting Hannibal, but I just wasn't feeling it.

Had a mixed week so far hobby wise. No paint (damned mojo vanishing) but did get around to ordering some hobby bits and bobs I've been intending to pick up for a while.

A new set of files as my other two sets (one set from the starter kit from the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazine!) are a bit clogged up so I figured a couple of quid on a new set wouldn't break the bank. Also, kids glue spreaders for attempting to get even coats of glue on bases and some disposable fire. As a non smoker, I have never really needed to have a lighter so I finally got around to ordering a bunch (a pack of 10 cost me the same price as a pack of 10 glue spreaders - roughly £2, or 20p a lighter) but decided to finally act on a piece of hobby advice I got years ago in regard to revel contacta plastic glue.

The best bit about this plastic glue is the accurate applicator nozzle, but for a couple of years mine has been jammed full of dried glue, so I've been using it without the nozzle - basically giving the same result as a pot of GW glue.

The reason for the fire is that if you hold the nozzle (separated from the bottle) with some tweezers or similar holding tool and waft a flame around it, the metal is so thin that it quickly heats up and burns the glue out (which isn't particularly pleasant to smell I might add) in seconds. It also leaves the metal with cool burn effects you can use as a guide to emmulate on flamer/melta weaponry :)

I'll be honest, I have no idea why I haven't done this sooner, but now I have, it's damned useful. There is also a mini scale garbage bag tutorial that uses fire in the process of making the tiny bin bags, so I might try that out as well.

To celebrate having fully functioning glue, I built some Deathwatch.

Here's the downside of my hobby week. On tuesday I got most of the new BMG and Marvel releases from Asylum Wargaming (delayed due to KM's slow dispatch to them. The final two in the order should be with me tomorrow) and was excited to finally get my hands on Starfire.

Here's what she looks like painted up, in the cool studio paint job.

See how smooth she is? Here's what mine looks like. I did get her built, as I was so excited about getting her I initially ignored the problems.

As you can see, she's covered in bubbled up texture all over. Everwhere that should be smooth, there is texture which completely ruins the miniature. I emailed Knight's customer services yesterday evening, not had a response yet though.

To end on a positive though, I also got Mr Hammer in the order, completing my Joker orders from a while back and built him up as well.

The painting mojo is returning, spent the same amount of time this weekend painting Hannibal's suit as I spent painting the entirity of Black Widow, Fat Cop or Red Hood.

Glazes finally clicked for me, so the bright purple suit has had a lot of shading added and highlights have started. I've left the lapels on his jacket at a base coat stage for now so I can do them last, as I predict his suit and tie being fiddly and messy.

I've deliberately left shading under his arms on both the arms and the sides of the jacket, along with the underside of the legs to add a darkness to him - he does work for Murder Inc after all!

I have to say, glazes have troubled me for the last year or so of trying to get them right so for them to finally seem to click gave me a real buzz and has got me really enjoying painting him, which is a stark change from this time last week.

Now, I'm off to watch the new Voltron series on Netflix :)
