Build a better Mephiston: Commission build and paint. pics 11/16

hey CMON...

i\'ve been hired to take the old metal Mephiston mini, and give him a makeover for the new millenium...
the task is to get rid of the old \"Joe Dirt\" mullethead look he\'s got, and give him a badass vampire look...
to bring some action and motion to such a static mini, i will base the build around one of the Dark Angel plastic bodies...
this is the stockpile of parts, and the original mini:

the metal Meph mini will be used to provide parts such as the sword and high collar...
the rest of the details will be copied with a greenstuff pressmould, and scratch sculptin\'...
before i could start to cut any parts off the metal Meph mini, i needed to mould the details...
makin\' a few pressmoulds of the shoulder pad details, and the chest will save me a lot of sculptin\' time, and let me get to the paintjob quicker...
i make a mould of the syringes as well, and one for the blood drops...

this is the result after the first bit of trimmin\' and clean-up:

a little more prep to go on the casts, and i\'ll be ready to glue them to the body and the shoulder pads...
then i\'ll use some more green stuff to blend them into the plastic parts, and we will have the base to start buildin\' Mephiston\'s signature look...

i hope this project will make some BA players very happy...
it\'s been a long time since the characters for this army have been givin\' an update...
the action-packed poses of the new Space Hulk Termies are definitely an inspiration...

I\'ve been waiting for someone to give this dude a makeover for a long time! He is such a staple of the Blood Angels and and has been my fave character in 40K for a long time. He deserved a more savage image!

Looking forward to the results!:D

And i have to add that it has been too long since we had some new minis! The new space hulk termies are of course fantastic but we have not had anything else new since 3rd ed! Thanks for giving this ago :cool:

The moulds look like they\'re working nice. And finally someone is creating that miniature with a new look.

Wow those moulds have come out really nice. What do you use on the mould before you fill it with GS to stop it from sticking together? Talc??

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out as I love converting, shame I can\'t paint them after lol

glad i\'ve got your attention...

@gapow: vaseline is used to keep the GS from stickin\'...
i didn\'t have any on hand last weekend, so i just used water...
it worked, but is a little risky...

i\'ve just finished 2 new minis for Dragonblood, and they are off to the post office tomorrow, so i will have some time to work on this guy for a few days while i prep the next Dblood minis...

should have some updates come monday...

actually, i never had any need before, as this is my first ever attempt at sculptin\', and doin\' anything more with greenstuff than just fillin\' gaps...

ask and ye shall recieve...

got some work done last night...
first up is the chest plate on the D.A. body...
this is the more dynamic of the two leg-sets that resemble the Meph sculpt...

the flow of the body and the robes will be enhanced by the outstretched plasma pistol in his left hand...
the sword will be switched over to the right hand, held at the ready...
the right arm plasma pistol has been snipped off, and a hole drilled for the sword...
the sword was clipped off of the left hand, and a pin put in for the switch...
a new handle and pommel will be sculpted on...
i\'ve also carved the wrist away on the arms, so i can sculpt some armoured gauntlets...
Meph has gloves, which just don\'t work for me on marines...

lastly, i got the icons glued to the shoulder pads...
they need some clean-up, and some GS blending to smooth everything out...

for the skull, i took the rim off the shoulder pad to match the original sculpt, MK6 stylee...

can you add a spacer to lift the torso up a tad? make him look a bit more imposing, maybe bulk out the shoulder pads a tad too

the D.A. bodies have a seperate chest plate, but not a sperate back piece...
i could have cut the waist and raised it, but this is a balance between how much i\'m gettin\' paid versus how much work i\'m gonna put in....

so no, i won\'t be making him taller...
the pads will get some GS work to integrate the cast bits in a bit better, and the rest of the magic will happen in paint...

i think once he has his giant collar, cloak, and flowin\' hair it should look the business...

hey CMON...

it\'s a bit of slow going at the moment, as i have a lot of minis to paint for Dragonblood Miniatures...
not to mention this is my first GS project, so i\'m tryin\' not to rush the stages...

i have finished the Blood Angels icon on the shoulder pad...
the top bars of the wing have been sculpted to look even, and the icon has had all the edges filled where it was glued down...
first completed piece!!!

i\'ve started on the sword arm...
the original metal sword was clipped from the left hand, and swapped to the right...
the pommel is my first real attempt at scratch sculpting...
it need a little clean-up, but will suffice for a first try...

now i need to clean up around the top of the hand, and sculpt the gauntlet sleeve, and power cable...

hey CMON...

just a little update today...
i took the leap, and cut the metal mephiston to bits...
here are the main metal bits, aside from the sword, that will contribute to the new model...

i will use the skulls on the Greenstuff overcoat, and see how it looks...
if that doesn\'t work, i will make moulds of the strips instead...
they should do the job though...

i\'ve saved the legs to use as a form for the mould of the overcoat...

the metal collar will save me a lot of sculpting...
i\'ll finish cleanin\' and fit the collar tomorrow...
hopefully it won\'t look too silly...

another small step in the process...
i\'ve got the collar ready to go on, and the head in place...

now that these two pieces are mocked up, its obvious that i messed up the placement of the chestplate...
it needs to be higher...
the skull belt, which will cover the rope, should be in line with the winged belt buckle...
DOH!!!

Meph looks like he\'s got man boobs right now, or else he\'s showin\' his age...
i\'ll rip this plate off, file the chest down some more, and mount a new chestplate...

I\'ve been watching this from the start, and I must say, it is an interesting read. One thing though, before you go much further. In your last pic, with the addition of the collar, it is making Meph look a bit squat. Now this can be one of 3 things.

1) As you have said the chest plate is in the wrong place making him look shorter.

2) The angle of the photograph is doing it(taken from slightly above)

3) the body is just too short, I seem to remember the Meph mini being a little taller than most of the other marines?

Just a little food for thought, would hate to see this much work put into something only to decide at the end you dont like it!
