bush speech

ok i know this has nothing to do with painting. but damn man..... how did an idiot like this become president? honestly i have never voted for him and after listening to his state of the union speech all i can do is shake my head back and forth slowly. much of this speech dealt with talking about the horrible things that coudl happen to us if we dont nip things in the bud. god knows that saddam hussein who never won a war was such a HUGE threat to national security. i\'m an american and honestly it makes me sad to see the way this country is going. my relatives and former students are going to iraq and dying! for what anyway.... so we can feel a little more scared so that bush and his cronies can make a few extra cents off of oil. so to everyone else out there i personally apologize for our president... hopefully in a few more years someone will be able to turn things around and put the united states in a better light.

i officially step down from my soapbox... sorry but i had to get that out. :flame::cussing::flame:

But I agree that Bush has made mistakes, and think, if they DIDN\'T go into Iraq, the world would be far worse. They are still finding mass graves and there are many middle-easterns (ie. the Kurds) who are still feeling the impact that Saddam Hussein had on them.

EDIT: For stupidity\'s sake.

Hmm. Don\'t apologize for me sir, or on behalf of the folks I work with.

You ever stop listening to the press for five minutes? Cause I\'m here to tell you spanky, they never get more than about 20 miles outside of Baghdad over here.

Yup, there is much violence going on - but stop and ask yourself, what else is going on over here? When is the last time that the almight press corps reported on the schools that are being built in the countryside? How about the visit of a group of parents of soldiers who were killed in action here to the Kurdish north of Iraq who were greeted like lost family members and honored for the sacrifices their children made to free an oppressed people?

Yes, there was no link between Sadam and Al Quaida - but he was paying the families of Palistinian Homicide Bombers $20k in support monies. During the \"Oil for Food\" Program monies were spent to improve his palaces, not the lives of his citizens. Oh, and lets not forget the 500 NBC agent warheads that have been found on the ground over here that he was supposed to have destroyed as part of the cease fire for the Gulf War.

Now, your relatives and former students are dying over here? Yes, over 3000 Americans have died in Iraq since 2004. Sounds horrible, doesnt it - course when compaired with the 6140 killed between 19 Feb to 26 March 1945 on Iwo Jima, the number gets a little more perspective.

As for the oil comment - oil has been dropping recently, so how are Bush et al making more money from it?

And finally as for the better light comment - if the US is such a horrible place to be, why are so many people dying - literally and figuratively - trying to get there?

See, my previous comment aside... I don\'t think anyone liked Saddam - maybe those who prospered under his iron fisted rule, and well... the US when he was their bastion against Iran\'s revolutionary mullahs. But he was a bastard and maybe didn\'t deserve to die (who does?) but certainly had no right to be ruling a nation. His ouster and capture were a positive result of the US invasion.

The thing is... that invasion and subsequent occupation have been managed with such cynical disdain for truth, human rights, the US people\'s will (and pocketbook), and the best interests of the Iraqi people, that it doesn\'t matter WHAT the positive outcomes were. The whole venture is still morally bankrupt, founded on lies and misrepresentations. Bush took an America that was the object of the world\'s sympathy in September 2001, and quickly made it more hated than ever, by responding with threats, saber-rattling and misplaced military retribution. Whether he is a crook, or a blathering moron being advised by crooks, will be for history to judge.

I honestly don\'t think this is the place to have these types of discussions, but while we are on the topic let me get my two cents in here. :) I agree with what SC has to say. And also to say I\'m getting sick of people whining about this left and right. Uberdark, the fact that you know people who have gotten shipped off to Iraq and that you still have this attitude is surprising. If you care about these people enough to complain that they are being shipped off, then why not support them? The soldiers there actually believe that what they are fighting for is a just cause....and the lack of support from home is impacting them horribly when it comes to moral. You obviously care about the people who you know that got shipped off...support them so they make it home safely...ranting on about something that cannot be fixed won\'t help you or them.

In the year 2000, there were over 2000 murders alone in the state of California.
That\'s just one state in one year.
Keeping with the murder rate, we have lost over double to triple the amount of people just in California, just due to murder (Not car crashes or accidental deaths which are being tallied into the Iraq casualties), in the same time period we\'ve been in Iraq.
I say we pull out of California.

I have had the unique chance to have been to many of the worlds most dangerous places, I was in Iraq during the first Gulf War, I was in LA during the riots, I was right outside New Orleans during Katrina, and have lived in each of these places at times, and I tell you this:

Given a choice between Los Angeles, New Orleans or Iraq, I would most likely choose to go back to Iraq.

I know you did not intend it to sound like that, but I really feel this is a horrible thing.

Anyway, I\'ll just stay away, me being German and all. However I\'ll be happy to participate if anyone wants to rant about the German government :D

rather than raking over the past again it might be more interesting to look at whats going to happen when bush leaves office next year.

Who is gonna replace him? the first black or the first (allegedly) female president or maybe Arnie \"i\'ll be back\" (for a second term) schwarzenneger if they change the constitution.

Two things that probaby shouldn\'t be discussed: religion and politics.

Think I\'ll stay out of this one.

It was pathetic. He mentioned \"climate change\" (and not global warming) once, at the very end. Most of the stuff even remotely connected with the environment was \"energy security\". As usual, all about $$$, truly pathetic.

i really wish people would get over this...

there have been and will be much worse events in human history...in comparison, the events of the past of the past 5 or 6 years don\'t even make the top 50....

Actually tieing it into $$$ is prolly the best idea he had all night. Unfortunately people are short sited at best, and all the promotion of and research into better ways to do things or to improve the environment is not going to do a damn bit of good until you show people how it will affect their bottom line - if 30 years ago the Congress and the President had made the sweeping changes in the emissions standards and the fuel economy standards that were proposed then things might be different. But because it was cheaper to continue down the bad old road, we did.

???

So, unless current conflicts match the world wars, or something, in scope they\'re not interesting?
