Buying brushes online

How's the quality? I've only ever bought one, intended it for donkey work but it turned out to be a nice brush. The reason I ask is because I need some new brushes, and brushes are one of the products I avoid buying online because of worries that I'll get a dud (you know what I mean - when we buy a brush from a shop we check them all out to get a nice one, and in the process encounter many that aren't good, not made well, not properly handled etc).

I have to buy my brushes online since there isn't anyplace even close to me that sells quality brushes.

To date, I've always gotten good quality brushes without any problems. My two main sources are:

Dick Blick Art Materials

Rosemary & Co.

Both have been very good for me, with excellent brushes and pretty fast shipping.

Depends on what brand you buy! Some brushes are a lot more consistent than others. Just like you say, when you buy a brush in person one of the advantages is being able to weed out the lemons.

It's a valid concern, because even if the online vendor has a good returns policy you still end up footing the bill for sending them back.

Other than buying a big brand from one of the major online vendors Rosemary & Co, being a smaller-scale operation, seem likely to have better control of their QC simply because they don't produce the same sorts of numbers and maybe also because they want to develop, and keep, a loyal customer base.

To echo a few other people, Rosemary & Co brushes are excellent. their quality control is very very good. Certain other manufacturers have had that area slip over the last few years, such as W&N.

Granddad!
I've also used Rosemary & Co, with no complaints

I also like Rune's Kappel Series brushes from the kaple shop, they are available individually or as a set, I bought the set and I'm more than happy with them
They are easily on a par with both R & Co and W&N 7's

oh yeah, and his CD is quite good too

ok thanks all. Yes I suppose a small company like Rosemary or Kapel will be a lot more likely to check my brushes for quality before they pack them, I'll try those.

I think supporting small companies is great, but if it happens that you ever need something they don't carry, Dick Blick is really good for customer service. I had one occasion where something was left out of an order and another one with a bad brush, and they were quick to send out replacements. They don't usually require that you mail it back, either, so I wasn't out postage.

I got good product from Dick Blick, but shipping was attrociously over expensive. Way, WAY more than it need be.

Good to know.

They have long had a good policy where if they can't fulfil an order in a single batch within a short timeframe they'll ship what they have and send the remaining item(s) at their own expense when it comes in, rather than have the entire order delayed by one item which is great. You hear some right horror stories sometimes about some vendors: a $250 order is delayed by one tube of paint that cost $4.75; an order sent out in two batches where the customer is billed for shipping each time; a large order delayed months, waiting for a single remaining item to be restocked!

FWIW I read something a while back where they addressed the problem of OTT shipping to Canada - for a time they were using only trackable options and for orders that were under 4lbs this was uncompetitive, so they added in (or back in) 1st Class via USPS, which can be as much as $10 cheaper where the cost of the order allows.

This was back in 2008 though, don't know if anything's changed since then but I know of a lot of people in Canada that order from them regularly.

Anyway, failing that is Curry's an option?

I've just been looking on Rosemary & Co. for some better brushes. Does anyone have any recommendations of the best types to use?

I notice there's many types, inclusing Squirrel hair!? Hard to know where to start.

In terms of bristle type, Kolinsky is definitely the way to go for pointing ability (and the longevity of the point) if you can afford it.

I also use Rosemary & Co and I'm quite happy with this brushes. Also, the shipping and customer service is very good. My brushes were shipped next day.

I usually get the Series 33 Kolinsky Sable brushes. The size 0 and 1 are pretty decent for most things that I do and I have a 2/0 for ultra-fine detail work.

I'm going ot buy some brushes shortly from Rosemary, also the one of details. Do you think 2/0 is enough? Or should I buy 10/0? I don't have good comparison, because as for now I was using 3 brands and every firm has different size for the same scale.

2/0 should be plenty; maybe even more than you might need. Of course, I don't know your painting style.

I'd say go ahead and get the 2/0 and see how it works for you. Just my two cents.

Does anyone have any advice on the difference between a long handle and a short one?

How long is short? :smirk:
