Byronics Chaos Army Diary (Picture heavy)

I\'ve got this thread up in a couple of other forums, but I thought I\'d post it here as well, in hopes of ruthless helpful painting criticisms, my DoW army is on hold, and I may paint it up and sell on a few following whenever I get a finished 2000 points of chaos. And do a completely specific thread for helping me achieve that.

My \'Deadline\' is the end of august, when I\'ll be attending my first tournament, where I expect to get thoroughly spanked, so I figure if my stuff doesn\'t look bad that\'ll soften the blow :D

Right; as for the army itself, basically apart from the characters I\'m not going for crazy detail on anything, but what I do want is a really coherent army with obvious homogeneity between every unit within it, also if anyone feels that any piece is below the standard of the rest please shout out, and let me know why, and I\'ll try and go back and sort that out a little, enough chitchat, on with the pictures:

(Nothing is completely finished, there\'s at least the fine details missing of everything)

Lord on Demonic Mount (Converted this guy, love the model, but I never use his mount, so I doubt he\'ll get included which is a shame, I may try and put him on a warshrine if I can):

Sigvald - love the model, it\'s going on a disc as an exalted:

Chosen - looking to have a unit with every model at least having a small conversion:

1 Sorc on foot - nurgle guy:

Warriors - these were my first unit for the army, so the standard isn\'t great, still need to do details.

Horsemen so far:

(dreading doing the layering on these, as it\'s a technique I find very perplexing :s)

Converted chosen chappy:

Sigvald from behind

Also I made this as a shield for him, as he\'s going to be my dude on a disc, I\'d like opinions on whether people think it would look better with a circular shield and the point bits behind it, rather than moulded to and coming from it?

(Any tips on freehand would be really appreciated, it\'s something I\'ve barely ever done before, and I find it really difficult :S)

and 2nd unit of dogs - even though they\'re throwaway units I don\'t like the seal lines so I greenstuffed their noses :)

(These guys are now undercoated, basecoated and skin is nearly finished, same with bases

All of your comments + criticisms welcome, I\'d like this army to really look as good as possible and be something I can be plenty proud of, no matter how brutal your thoughts, they\'re always helpful :)

You should be very proud! A great standard across the entire project! Great job on the flesh of the warhaounds and the bases are really, really well done. Keep it up!

@ Necroghast thanks man :) another batch nearly done, pictures will be up soon

@Scott thanks again :D, I\'ve really tried to work on the way I base my stuff for this army, so great to get some feedback on that :)

Quick question, I am wondering whether the army would look better if the sides of the bases were black rather than brown, as they don\'t match the movement trays I\'ll be using, opinions?

Also, which type of fur do you prefer?

Got a bit bored of core, so started on this chappy, staff is untouched as of yet, and his cloak needs some finishing, all thoughts would be great on him, as I\'d like my chars to be to the highest standard I can manage, also my first real attempt at having a light source, I need to work on the glazing i used to do the effect, any tips regarding that would be awesome.

(Yes, this guy is storming my shed..)

Also - fur preferences? (see last post :))

Happy Saturday all ^^

great work. the osl doesn\'t work in my eyes, it just looks like the things have burst and he\'s covered with goo!

all very good quality

as for fur, i like both. some will look furry and others smooth skinned. it is chaos after all!

lovely, lovely chaos army so far. The only thing that stood out to me was the skin on the mounted lord\'s horse. At the current stage it\'s looking a bit flat and pinky. Looking forward to updates!

Thanks for the input guys :)

I agree goffrocka, I\'ve got to find a place for him yet as I love the model, but i never use demonic mounts :s if I can work out a way to involve him in the warshrine I will!

Worked on a spawn thing yesterday at work, really would like some suggestions on how to improve my sculpting, it\'s going to have lots of teeth :)

I\'m really liking the musculature on that spawn, is it going to be a wolf-like creature or bipedal? sorry cant wait to see final result. Carry on.

Thanks again, to be honest I\'ve no idea, unitially this was going to be the front half of something that crawled a but like a worm, with the entire from of the piece that I\'ve posted a picture of being mouth pretty much, not too sure now though as it looks as like a back.

Unfortunately I\'m not skilled enough to really do animal or human like faces, especially if I tried to do something cool and lupine :S

All suggestions would be great, I\'m a terrible sketcher, but I may try and work some stuff out on paper before I go further, having said that it\'s chaos so I ay just working with it and see where it ends up :p

WOW... I think this is the first time I am seeing this thread mate, and I must say, very inspiring. I especially love the chaos hounds, they come across as very natural. Can\'t wait to see more progress on the Chaos Lord and that sculpted from scratch spawn. Amazing stuff.

 Coming fro you that means a lot, thanks man!

little bit of work on the spawn :

If anyone\'s got any advice on where ot go with it hit me, legs/limbs/wormlike/snakelike/face/mouth/ears I don\'t mind, i\'ve got no idea where I\'m going with it!

Also any overall army opinions on what needs fixing/could be improved would be brilliant :)

What do you think of when you think of the army? That is where I would take the spawn, something to really epidomize the overall theme of your army... (lots of beasts add bestial elements, warriors then add lots of weapony elements, etc)... hope that makes sense.

I agree with what mousekiller is saying regarding your spawn, have it as though the spawn has burst/come out of/evolved from a key element to your army, either warrior/marauder/beast of some sort.

As for your bases i prefer them to have the black edges, i myself am doing a High elf army with snow bases and kept the base rims black.

For the sorcerer and the OSL I think you need to have more depth in the green, it is as though the green you have painted so far is the brighter colour where the light would have most prominently hit, but as you move away from this point the green will get darker, hope you get what I mean :p

great looking army though so far

Nice input man, much appreciated, I\'ll hopefully be going back to the sorcerer soon and i\'ll bear that in mind as I try to sort him out :)

I\'ve been slacking due to work recently, but a quick little update:

constructed 2 sets of 5 bases (warhounds and horsemen to go on these)

Started work on a semi-scenic base for my tzeench exalted (sigvald) model, and also made him a disc (not very happy at all with the freehand on this, which I really do suck at unfortunately :S Obviously it\'s an area which I definitely need to work on :S

also have a base for my spawny thing (which will have the bottom half of a snake I\'ve decided) - and also started working on the bodyfront, which is basically going to be one big mouth, no idea if it\'s going to look any good, it\'s still seriously lacking teeth - as ever suggestions and criticisms would be great :D

Spawny body + lower half start (quite hard to see the shape it\'s going to be) + tzeentch disk

DSCI1409.jpg

front view (the snake is going to be slithering over the wall on the base in the image above)

De-seal-lined hounds, still need greenstuffing and putting on their base, also the base that\'s going to be for the hounds, and the base for my discrider :)

I should have taken my time...

Last time I looked at this thread I saw the great paintjobs and was impressed...

Problem was I totally missed really looking closely at the bases of some of these guys. I love the cut up bark used as huge stone and with the ice/snow dripping over when it\'s all put together as a unit. I\'m sure it\'s stunning to see on the tabletop.

Sometimes just need to slow down and remember to take a closer look...

Great job on all of it, top to bottom.

Edit: Oh - and that blue cloth background was good for the pic, just take an iron to it :)

Thanks man! Means a lot to get comments like this, I\'m really trying to improve on my basing, so getting feedback like this is brilliant, is there anything you could suggest to improve it further by the way? - are they a little too plain/monochromey for example?

Quick bad quality flash photo of where I\'m at now (came out a fair bit brighter than they are in real life):

DSCI1446.jpg

Hounds de-seal-lined, gaps greenstuffed and undercoated (no more ugly half and half looking models here!), bases finished (apart from snow), I\'m planning to really really take my time on these guys and make them my best unit of dogs....as the longer I spend doing these the longer the wait till I\'ve got to think about horsemen :s eurgh

I do genuinely hate them so much, no idea why :S

The mold lines and fit of some of the models like those hounds, and the wlves form the goblin riders box, and some other normal like critters from GW does suck working with them.

They are looking quite good though.

I wish I could get into painting the minis I hate to paint.

I like that broken log base split along 5 cavalry bases. Can\'t wait to see what goes on them.
