reasons?

I\'ve heard a lot of \"explanations\" as to why Canada has done so terribly. A couple of people I talked to just say that Canadian athletes just don\'t get paid enough. I don\'t think that\'s really the reason since you don\'t become an \"amature athlete\" as they\'re called, just to get rich. People like what they do, and it\'s even better if they win and are best in the world.

On CBC today they were talking about this as well, how in the states you get 75k for a gold. In russia upwards of 250k. Shocking numbers, but I don\'t know if Canada is willing to spend that much money on these athletes. We sent 273 this year (might be 263, but over 250 regardless). That\'s quite the showing. I\'m not sure if Canadian victory would benefit the country in any way. I would agree with paying the athletes a deserving amount of money if it got more kids interested in sports and therefore leading a healthy/active lifestyle. But I\'m not sure if that would work.

hmm... so its either canadian athletes arent motivated enough, the temperature in athens is way higher than ours n they havent adjusted to it:D or ther just too bloody lazy to compete:D

but the medal count is still unexplainable considering we\'ve done pretty well the last few olympics... i think???

Money isn\'t everything. Singapore pays S$250k (US$150k) for bronze, S$500k (US$300k) for silver and S$1mil (US$590k) for gold.

Total medal tally for 2004: 0.. :~(

We now have
1 Gold
2 Silvers
1 Bronze

Not too bad, we\'re somewhere in the middle of the pack I believe.

The problem is the catagories which we have won in.

Synchronized Diving
Trampoline
Artistic Gymnastics
Rowing

I see all of one truly valid catagory there.

Aussie Aussie Aussie.

32 medals, 12 gold. Not that we\'re boasting. At montreal we won a solitary bronze medal. It sparked a national sporting crisis, people remembered the days when we did better. As a result of our poor showing the Australian Institute of Sport was started. Since then it has been improvement after improvement. Maybe this is Canadian sports lowest ebb before a new surge.

My birrth country (UK) and adopted country (Oz) are doing pretty well, but its amazing how much more of a sporting nation Oz is than the UK, in the UK it seems to be all football football and not much else.

yeah that\'s the strange thing :) uk is like the football-craziest country in the world and they haven\'t won a champions league in years.

Belgium has it\'s gold medal and two bronze, but we have so much more potential. We should encourage professionalism even more amongst our kid - athletes and give them proper chances to grow.

...because I detest football. But IMO it is difficult to field a \'great\' international side whilst you have such a high level of league play as we do.

I don\'t mean that as an excuse, because I honestly couldn\'t care less about soccer whether England win or not.

Even little New Zealand have got a couple of Golds, all women with a rowin pair and a 3k cycle pursuit thingy.
On a Golds per million population Aussie has someting like 1 Gold per 1.6 Mill and NZ second on about 2 mill and USA has 1 per 13 million and china at 1 per 45 mill.
It doesnt get you more Golds but you can claim a moral victory of sorts :D

Started looking round the web to see if anybody else comes close and found a cool stats website at nationmaster.com, did you know for example while The Bahamas at Sydney had the most gold medals per capita (australia in 5th), Cuba had the most per GDP?

It\'s nice to see our athletes winning medals but I wouldn\'t feel disappointed or embarassed if they didn\'t. They all tried their best and worked hard and that makes them all winners for me.

But taking those gold medals away from our riders...well, that just sucked big time. I hope there\'s a way for them to demand them back.

I assume we are talking about the equestrian 3 day eventing here?

I assume you are seeing different press about it than us, but my (very limited) understanding is she broke one of the (slightly silly) rules of the sport and so should have the penalty points given her, hence missing out on the medals

Unless the result has changed drastically since the last time I saw the germans got the gold for both the team eventing, and bettina hoy got the gold for the idividual.

The appeals board overturned the penalties as the countdown clock at the stadium was reset and the management of the event was at fault, not the rider.

Was looking on the olympics website, and I don\'t think the appeals board ruling was overturned.

[irony mode on]Equestranism is a Sport?
So somebody sits on the back of a horse, jumping over sticks of wood and gets a gold medal.
What does the horse get................A bloody carrot if it\'s lucky. [/irony mode off]

Sorry but in my opinion, the Olympics is about individual/team human excellence.

As much as I think that horses are a good looking animal, I do think that they are still rather dim to let us ride on their backs.

:flip:

Well, they won gold, then lost gold, then won it again and now they\'ve lost it again all because of some stupid fault of the management.
Totally not in the sense of what the olympics are supposed to stand for. The other rider teams really ought to be ashamed of themselves for going on such ways to win gold, silver and bronze.
