Cassar's Slaanesh Terminator... in miniature

Thanks :) I'm aiming to do little and often. So far, an hour or so here and there is making good progress overall! I'm learning and gaining confidence too.

I really wanted to work on the left leg tonight but have had to prepare for builders coming tomorrow. No work surfaces available tonight :-(

Little progress, just structural work tonight:

I don't deal well with changes to my sleeping pattern and the recent change to the clocks has knocked me for six, haha. I feel jet lagged and it's only an hour forward! Really wanted to have progressed more than this and being as tired as I feel I've had to force myself to do even this little.

Progress tonight not even worth photographing! I attempted sculpting the exhaust vents on the back however the depth of putty required to fill the void * just caused collapse of any detail I created. For now I've just built up the structure and if it's hard enough before I go to bed I'll add the vents.

With this kind of thing I tend to sculpt the vents first then add structural detail over the top as a seperate layer.

I'm away for the weekend but should imagine that I'll be able to make a good week of it from Monday. Should have thought I could get the left leg and torso more or less completed, plus a little head work. I'm debating whether to sculpt the head directly onto the torso or seperately.

* If you take a look at the photo posted yesterday each side to the torso is merely a thin sheet of putty. This was intended as a rough guideline and structure. As noted above it'll need filling in before I can build up any detail such as the vents.

Why do I get a mental image of a couple of snotling making wash-board jazz on that back.... I wonder...

Interesting - I would have never thought to do the vents and then sculpt around them. I may have to "borrow" that idea! Looking good!

Slaanesh Terminator

It's looking nice. Take your time and make it fun or it'll become a chore you dread. Your definitely making progress and you've got some good ideas going. Keep it up.

Thanks for the positive comments :) Regarding the idea itself I can't take credit as this is Cassars baby! I'm just the technician in this instance.

A little more structural work tonight...

...plus the ground work for a few heads (well, a few balls on sticks...):

One of these could become 'the one', or at least provide enough practice for a direct sculpt to the torso.

You may be wondering about the Orky head... probably not, but I'll elaborate anyway! This was a practice piece for the following (unfinished) sculpt:

pgork.jpg

I seem to recall this piece being inspired by HiveTyrgons work but pretty much copied from some GW Gorka Morka stuff. Having said that I have no idea when I last worked on this piece let alone when it was started...

It's looking better and better. Keep working at it. The orc if that's what it is looks cool as well. Good work.

Wow man! That ork is awesome! You should finish him!

I'm going to play devil's advocate on the terminator though and make a suggestion. You need to address his legs. :( The upper legs have gotten too big, while the lower legs are way too small. It was noticeable before, but has gotten worse now that you've added the upper carapace. I'm curious how big he is right now compared to a stock plastic termi. If he's the same height or shorter, you could do a lot of good by simply chopping off his feet, and extending the lower legs. If he's already larger, then you probably should go the more difficult route of redoing the upper legs as well.

Sorry to be a downer, but I just want to see you improve. I've chopped stuff off and redone it before when sculpting, and it almost always turns out better the second time around. :p

Thanks for the praise and constructive criticism Khavor - it means a lot coming from one as talented as yourself :) Keep it coming by all means! Now you mention it I do see what you mean. At the next opportunity I'll certainly take a look at this to see just how far out I am. If anything I may extend the lower leg armour slightly vertically in order to hide this poor proportion. Not good practice I know but in this instance I don't have the balls for any drastic action. I think it may be best as a learning experience - I shall see.

In terms of size, it is indeed bigger than the GW equivalent. I'll measure it for my next post. I would estimate it's around 50% bigger than a GW Termi'. It's a shame as I keep aiming to scale down to 28mm but with this guy I struggled getting some of the details down even at this enlarged size! One day, one day. At least I have something to work towards!

I know, I hated to suggest it as I really like the face you've done on the lower right leg, and it'd be a shame to waste it. But I think you're right, you can fix a lot just by adding some to the bottoms of the legs and redoing the feet. It'll even give you space to extend the face and maybe do some fangs. Only down side is that he gets even taller. :p But hey, there's nothing wrong with being the biggest, baddest dude on the block (except for true line of sight of course).

I'll see this as a practice piece for future minis as I can imagine there will be many more mistakes to come during this sculpt! It's a shame I don't have a GW Termi' to use as a reference.

As for constructive criticism, please keep it coming!

Having a reference mini is awesome. I have a metric buttload of space marines sitting around, which has allowed me to keep my marines in scale. I couldn't imagine trying to do something that complex without a guide at hand.
