Cassar's Slaanesh Terminator... in miniature

Long time no see! I've been on hiatus for a little while now, playing my new guitar (see below), looking at properties (as a first time buyer) and watching my Alias DVD box set.

I continued with a little body work last night, just getting the shape of the torso right:

...I also had a quick go at roughing some heads, although I was too impatient to let the putty firm sufficiently before use. These are in the first sitting so far, so after a bit of reshaping I'm sure they'll gave their uses:

The first head may be okay for use after a further sitting, although I may just make another go at it. Below is an 'artists impression' (with thanks to Photoshop!) of roughly what the mini would look like using this head. The second head was a sketch to practice teeth. After another sitting it may have its uses for a later zombie project.

Now winter is on its way (is it?!) I hope to get back into sculpting, so hopefully you'll be seeing more of me here :)

Is that a Schecter you have there? Have any other guitars? I'm a bit of a collector myself.

It's a beaut' isn't it! It's an MJ Mirage (http://www.mjguitar.com/mirage.html). I've loved these guitars since I saw Kevin Cadogan (of Third Eye Blind) weilding one back in the 90's. Sounds incredible (has a chambered body and they split the pickps for me) and is so comfortable. I also own a PRS SE (i.e. budget model) Soapbar II.

Back to the mini'... I have removed the figure from the base so I can make the feet a little bigger. Here's a pic' to summarise my next moves:

I'll probably use a little creative license to make a few changes from Cassars original, namely lifting the shoulder pads up a little, as per the GW Space Marine Terminators. I like how this positioning makes for a more imposing, broad shape. Also, I may change the teeth for venting, omit the spikes from the chest and change the location of the weird-booby-like-things:

This looks like an excellent project. Is this for Slaanesh Marines or Noise Marines/Emperors Children?

Thanks for your interest. This mini was inspired by CMON user Cassar:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/showthread.php?44807-Slaanesh-terminator

The original model was sculpted to a fairly big scale by the looks of things and is a Slaanesh Marine in Terminator armour. I thought I'd have a go at sculpting this is miniature, the idea being to keep things as true to the original as possible. This however hasn't always been realistic, due to both my abilities and the reduced size. In addition I'll be using the occassional creative license here and there!

Small update:

termi07-oct-2011.jpg

I've finally corrected the lower legs (look okay to people now?) and used the excess putty to smooth the torso top.

I've filled the holes and filled out the lower left leg a little. Some of the ridges round the back of the legs needed tidying up and some cracks filling. I've also started work on the lower left leg rear ridge and detailing on the leg hinges (for loss of a better word?!).

Next to come will be detailing on the left leg (pointy Chaos arrows), the sheeps skull and enlarging the feet.

Criticism, tips and suggestions are more than welcome!

Things are starting to take shape now. I've started work on the power claw to speed things up:

I've seen other people using a pin-vice as a sculpting aid before and been meaning to try it for a while!

Edit: I've also rolled out a load of individual teeth as I'm sick of trying to sculpt them (see post #42 above)! Think I may start doing this whenever I have left over GS so I eventually have a big stock pile for use as teeth / horns / spikes etc when required. I intend to assemble two jaw components and use these to build the head.

two jaws sculpted:

...and a glance at how things might turn out:

will use these to make two potential heads

Last night I did a little more structural work on the jaws:

termijaws18-oct-20112.jpg

The original plan was to create two seperate jaws and fix them together once dry (see previous post). I found that the jaws did not interlock too well, meaning the head would be larger than I desire (not fitting into the available space in the torso). My next idea was to build up a ridge to which I could then attach putty with which to 'glue' the upper teeth.

And so to tonights progress (see Cassars original (on the right...) for reference):

Once dry this head will just require fleshing out (around the mouth and eyelids, etc). I'll make a similar attempt with the other head-base. First of all I need to prepare more teeth...

With my left over putty I started a ground layer for the rams skull horns:

While that may not be too noticeable in the photo, you will spot that I have 'upgraded' this guy to a larger cork. This will allow me to make the feet a little bigger.

Done some more work on the head and *damn* it's heard going. I won't know til it's dry whether or not it will fit the hood. This has given me a whole new respect for the GW team (and of course any other 28mm scale sculptors) as although this slightly larger scale is more forgiving I'm struggling to get satisfactory form yet alone detail.

Any step-by-step tips on the construction of such a head would be much appreciated. I'll have to try a different tact when I work on the second head. If I make two or three perhaps I can choose one (or at least use them as concept / pitfall sculpts).

Ive also revised my study sheet in a touch more detail in the hope it'd help the coming steps:

Continued with the power claw by sculpting the padded palm section:

Both components will receive a bit of a fine-tune before bed!

PS It's good to have you back on board Cassar! Sorry to have vanished without trace for 6 months.

Edit: After a little refining I'm now a little more pleased with head #1:

Although I am happy with how the head turned out, it unfortunately does not fit!

cassartermiwhead121-oct-2011.jpg

I am pretty disappointed as the head needs to be 75% of this size really.

You will next hear from me in a weeks time as I'll be visiting friends and family Saturday til Thursday!

I see Barney ^^

Wise words indeed! As frustrating as it is I realise it's all part of the learning process. I intend to make a few heads anyway so it's only a matter of time til I strike it lucky.

It does give me a lot of respect for all mini sculptors out there: how do they achieve detail and correct proportions while maintaining such a small size? In this instance I couldn't have worked any smaller! It will come with time and experience and I am pretty happy with the progress I'm making.

I will have a go with the other jaw I've prepared but also, rather than working vertically (from the lower jaw upwards), I will make an attempt at sculpting in relief: the whole face on the flat of the cork. I think that will offer me the stability I'll need to work at the required size.

The head should end up to the size of this digital mock-up:

cassartermi21-oct-2011whishfulthinking.jpg

In the meantime there'll be no sleep lost as I have much work to do regarding the power claw, shoulder pads, sword and other detailing on the torso. There's no hurry as far as the head is concerned :)

As for this rejected head I'm sure it'll have it's uses in the future!
