Cell/Mobile phone addiction?

I guess I fall into an old fogie as far as cell phones go.

I think it was back in about 2000 or so, when I first noticed this behavior. A guy I worked with always had his cell phone, and constantly had a stream of calls from his personal life. He HAD to be connected at all times with his family and friends.

I thought that really odd, but in the last decade, it's become the norm.

I do have a cell phone, but it's been issued from work. I'm allowed personal calls on it, but I have to be honest, I rarely use it.

So, what's your deal? Could you not live without your phone? Are you constantly connected? Do you wait in line on 'opening day' when a new phone is released?

Not really addicted to my phone (iPhone) although I do check Twitter on it during breaks. Get my email through it as well.

And having coworkers getting personal calls on their cells bothers me a lot. I know a couple people who probably spend at least two hours a day discussing personal issues with whoever is on the other side of that call. That's just wrong.

But what's sad are the people who wait until they're out the door and immediately call someone. "What you doing?" "Oh, I'm walking out to my car as well". "Did you see that TV show last night?" It's all just so insignificant, in my opinion, and I worry that they're not getting enough quality in their life. Not my place to suggest, I suppose.

Sick to death of the phone obsession. Cool devices, very impolite users. How often are you having a conversation when whoever you're talking to is either stopping to text/call/answer/facebook their freakin phone. UGG...............if you're going to be with me, be with me. If you're going to cater to this device then do that but don't try to do both at the same time. :bad:

Believe it or not I'm 17 and I rarely use my phone. It's not because I have no life, it's just that I feel I don't always have to be connected with everyone all the time. (I just use the internet for communication) My phone has something like 10 contacts half of them family. I've sent 1 text message in my life. What really pisses me off is when I see fellow students using their phones in class while we're supposed to be doing work and/or listening to the teacher. I mean, do they REALLY need to send their friend some stupid message every day right in the middle of class? It's not unique to any particular group either. I see kids in my Advanced English class, a college credit course, texting while my teacher is talking. Annoys me greatly.

I guess i'd fit into the old fogie catagory as well. I have a modern touch screen phone - which is nice - but I don't live my life connected to it. It's mostly used to text the wife that I am on my way home or for the odd call when I need to know something right away when a text may not be fast enough.
It does annoy me when people spend ages on the phone talking to family - wives especially - about nothing important... like what are you doing, did you see such and such last night. Argghhh. If my wife constantly pestered me on the phone all day to waffle about nothing - something she can do quite well when allowed - I would probably end up blocking her from calling me... it's just not necessary.

LOL funny thread. I often wonder how people could spend hours an hours on their "smart-phone". If I want to look something up on the internet I use my pc (at work) or my small netbook at home. I own a super old nokia cell phone but I really use it very seldom. I wanted to buy a new "cool" smart phone for two years now, but everytime I make up my mind buying one I wonder: WHAT FOR? I just need to make calls or text, that's realy all I need and this I can still do with my old-timer . :/ I don't need no fancy "Apps" or cameras with my cell phone. 10 years ago I was a real "tech-adict", I always wanted the newest technology like PDAs, cameras or computers. But it all lost a lot of appeal to me. If I have spare time I rather spend it with my family or with my other hobbies. I think I grow old... *sigh* :D

Well, we seem to have a common thread here.

But, then, who the heck are all those people on the phone when I'm making my way about town? And, who the hell are they talking to?

And most intriguing to me, what the heck are they saying? (not that I really care, but it amazing to me that they have that much to say.)

This reminds me of when I got my Ipod. I got the Nano because I thought it was really cool that it had a video camera on it. I never use the camera. When this one breaks I'm going to go for the classic; just space.

Was riding with a friend the other day and he was texting WHILE driving. I have a hard time speaking up but finally said that it was freaking me out.

Nope Jim you're not an old fogy, just someone with clear COMMUNCATION skills.
In the vast majority of times my phone is used for text messages, usually dodgy jokes as freakinacage will testify, but to me its just a tool not the 'be all and end all' of my life.
And as a tool I use it as such, phone calls when I need them, text or camera the same.

In the car its ignored if I'm alone or passed to Fran to answer.
If I'm socialising with people an it goes off it depends on the caller if I'll answer, friends 90% of the times (Same social group)
If its Work calling, Then I'll excuse myself to answer as my colleagues and I have an understanding that we only call each other if we have good reason.

When i worked in import/export office i had 2 phones my own and the work phone. Even on holiday if i needed to be contacted they would. I WISH i could do without a mobile as i fondly remember not needing one not so long ago, but as im self employed now the phone is my main contact with customers.

If i didnt have it i wouldnt, the wife MADE me upgrade a perfect working Nokia 5110 (ancient) to some new nokia that could possibly power a cruise missle.

Well, i'm 31 and i cant be arsed with phones. If it can make a phone call thats all i need it for. The camera gets used to take pictures of my friends and family's cats.... I use about £10 every 6 weeks or so and hate texting. If i want to browse the net, i use a PC. I hate facebook and wouldnt piss on twitter if it was on fire. Only reason i can think of to have a better phone is to take pictures of mini's....but then i remember i have a camera so its not nessacary. If in want to talk to people, i will. I dont need 60 texts a day from people saying how they're doing. It'd piss me right off.

I am 35 and I have a non-smart phone.
It is a Samsung Alias, and it is directly for texting and calls.
I text constantly, with friends, clients, and the woman.
But I don't like the non-flip phones, because it feels like I am talking into a bar of soap.

If I didn't text, I'd actaully have to talk to people (which is annoying) and I usually don't have enough to say for a full phone conversation (which risks having to listen to what THEY have to say).
I do NOT text or talk while driving, and have been tempted(especially lately) to nudge idiots off the highway that are on theirs.
If you absolutely MUST talk to someone while you're driving, get a frikkin' hands-free device!

I started a FB back a year ago or so...mostly to keep in touch with folks from here. But somehow it got mixed in with people I know in real life, and then my private little weird persona started to intersect with my real life... Creeped me out so badly I cancelled the whole thing.

I have one for work out of necessity. Issued by work, and used only for work and emergency personal calls. In the last five years, there have been only two emergency calls.
I refuse to own one, myself. I have a land line which I only get 2 calls per month on, not counting telemarketers.
Everyone else deals with me via email.
