A better version of Stairway to heaven?! HERESY!!!!!

:D As long as we\'re on the subject of Led Zepplin & cover versions of songs... Almost every song on their first two albums were cover versions of older songs. Interestingly enough, they were also almost all attributed to Jimmy Page! There was a great deal of controversy about it at the time because both they and the record company were refusing to pay any rights to the real owners of the songs, most of whom were old blues musicians. Just to make matters worse (remember this was back in the late 60s and early 70s) both Page & Robert Plant made asses of themselves by making some pretty ignorant, racist statements to the effect that maybe others had written and performed them previously, but they were the first to make them really popular because they were white. Proving once again that having great talent doesn\'t necessarily make you smart.

Indeed... check out the obviously ripped similarities between Black Mountains Side (Page (my ass)) and Bert Jansch\'s Black Waterside!

The bounder lol

For reference and to ply you with possibly the greatest guitarist ever (apart from maybe Davy Graham) ;) -

And not a single mention of the infamous Dred Zeppelin....

Where else are you going to find LZ tunes, sung by an Elvis impersonator, and done as reggae?

Reality is weird enough. I don\'t need to make up stuff like this. :D

My former band recorded a version of Kim Wyldes \'\'Kids in America\'\' That has a bit of balls to it, so much so that I cannot listen to the original now as it sounds like it all drones on and only has one level.

Does anyone know of a way I can put the CD recording on the interweb and put a link on for you all to have a listen to?

I remember Dread Zepplen!! It strangeley worked!!!

Girls aloud need a slap in the face with a haddock for covering Tiffanys \'I think wer\'e alone now\', that song always reminds me of being a kid and was actually on my wedding playlist (but not as the first dance you will be glad to hear!)

This talk of Dread Zeppelin reminded me of the Easy Star All-Stars, who redid Floyd in dub as \"Dub Side of the Moon.\" It was actually quite good, but I liked the original album better for no particular reason.

They\'ve done a new one called \"Radiodread\" covering.....well, I\'m sure you get it. ;)
They redid OK Computer in dub...and I happen to like the dub version far better, although that\'s probably just because I\'m not a huge fan of Radiohead.

EDIT: Just listened to a few songs from Dread Zeppelin. It\'s okay, but it\'s not really that recognizable as reggae? And that singer is just....

A good cover for me would be the cover of \"Running up that hill\" origionally by Kate Bush (great song).

Now preformed by Dutch goth rock band Within Temptation (one of my favorite bands).

Still prefer the origional to the cover but love them both (Sharon den Adel rocks)

(and 2 other songs from them I love to bits... these are origionals though no cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4rrCGI2cYQ&mode=related&search=

@Nelson: \'Twas their first album that was all like that. I only just learned that they\'d actually done more than the first album.

I\'m actually surprised by it.

My two favorite covers have to be Hurt by Johnny cash, really changed the feel of that song, and Hey yeah done by a local Phoenix group Obadiah Parker. Again a completly differant take on the song. I think someone some time back posted a link to the youtube video of his cover. But i\'ll post it again to eb sure. http://youtube.com/watch?v=RSrSVed39XA

@ DrEvilMonki - not complaining that someone did a COVER, but that the end result was so lame compared to...
Well, any other version of any other song EVER.

I\'d rather listen to baby kittens being sand blasted. :innocent:

Read my earlier post.
Tiffany\'s was a cover of a Tommy James and the Shondells hit. I list all of the many bands who have covered that song.

I was going to mention this song! A band called Pennywise did do a cover of it....I remember that being pretty cool.

I do not doubt that people sung it before Tiffany, but the Tiffiany version is probably the only one people remember, And I am sure none of Girls aloud have heard much of the shondells or Tommy wommy bing bong?

I am also fairly sure that all the radio DJ\'s and tv VJ\'s mention Tiffanys version and not the sha la las or Tommy wants a happy meal, before/after playing the cover.

And I am absolutley certain that it was the Tiffany version on my wedding playlist, which is what my quoted post was referring to...

I heard the Pennywise cover of \'kids In America\' a couple of days after we recorded our version whilst in my local nightclub! Its pretty cool!! I also like the Sid Vicious My Way version too, thats a cool vid!

At the time we were in the studio there were a couple of 80\'s covers being done, Alien ant farm had just released \'Smooth Criminal\', and Wheatus had just done \'A little respect\', which IMHO is a great cover version. We were trying to jump on the bandwagon so threw on an 80\'s cover of our own (\'I think were alone now\' actually very nearly made it to the recording studio.) We shot ourselves in the foot a little though, as when we got the CD duplicated and contacted the PRS, we had to pay Marty Wylde (Kims dad and writer) the princeley sum of £80, and we were only allowed to use the CD for promotional purposes and could not sell it at gigs. It also delayed the pressing, so we didn\'t actually have a CD done in time for our CD launch gig!!!

(theres a nice little bit of trivia for you about my Band, you learn something new everyday!)
