CMON II?

A CMONII sounds like a nice idea, but agree with Sturmhalo; stick with what we\'ve got.
There are problems with the site - multiple muliple submissions of the same poor mini from multiple angles gets my goat, but for inpirational browsing I do a 8+ filter in the gallery; my goal is to get above 8 as my average

lotsa good ideas...

I like Trev\'s idea of a \'archive\'. This would make voting and commenting much more useful and easy to do.

I also like Slidedog\'s comment of \'having more accountability\'.

It is a valid topic for discussion, although I hope this is not just another chance for Finn to become a \"posting immortal\"....(kidding ONLY kidding!)

CMON II ideas:

Instead of $1 a month you pay $3 or $5 but get the contest minis sent to you automatically.

Instead of voting only - voting and commenting are required including half votes or even voting at the tenths. 6.5, 6.6, 6.7 etc.

Instead of being a separate group the main qualification is being a responsible member of this site as deemed by the moderators who already filter our poor decisions from our good. Instead of filtering everybodies decisions they would just know who doesn\'t need to be moderated and would therefore need a lot less overhead.

Not the best of the best mentality (we already are lol ) a most dedicated of the dedicated mentality.

With the increased membership fee would come a more organized (not complaining about this one though) Round Robin Mini. Instead of relying on each of us to pack and ship it, the websites representetive would be sent the money, pack it, and include prepaid airbills or possibly links to printable airbills like UPS does.

Limit the number of submissions to the site to about 10-15 per day so that people would actually study the pictures and leave helpful comments and wouldn\'t have to rush since they are 43000 pictures behind. Pictures submitted but not posted would just be queued up to be posted when their day comes.

Finally, I haven\'t posted any of the figs I have painted for about a year as every picture I take and then edit still sucks. I would like to ask for help but if I asked on the forums I would just be redirected to the articles (I\'ve read them all) or given the same drivel over and over. Instead of a collective solution to one persons problem I think people should be able to ask for help and then start a dialogue with the knowledgable party until a solution is reached. Sometimes I feel the unskilled get blasted from all sides with frequently repetitive (though good) information.

And Email notification about PM if that doesn\'t exist. I don\'t remember its been about a year since I got one.

I.e. Never. I mean, if you get 20 minis a day and can only post 15, then the next day you have 25, and so on. So that wouldn\'t work, IMO.

Mainly good ideas except the limit on submissions a day, if you start quing them it means something you want comments on you have to wait a year to show up on the site because you have to wait for its turn !

CMON is pretty much OK as it is really, aint it? I think it could just do with a spring clean of old dross and multiple submissions:D

I also think CMON should remain mainly as it is. If there are too many restrictions and \"can\'t-do-this-unless-you-do-that\" I think people would start dropping out. At least I can live with the negative aspects of the site and if I really want some constructive criticism or helpful advice I come here to the forum where I get lots. I don\'t wait for someone to spot my minis and give comments and might give some helpful suggestions as well.

I think it is great that everyone, including proffessional painters, talented amateurs and beginners, have a common place, open for all. I wouldn\'t want it any other way.

I do agree, however, that some of the old stuff could be taken out of rotation. All minis older than a year or so with an average score below a certain value could possibly be disabled so that you won\'t randomly see them, but they would still be available if you search for them or type in the id or look at someones gallery.

What, does it kill some of you people to hit the \"next\" arrow if a mini doesn\'t interest you? I think the site is fine the way it is - new minis with <50 votes get semi-preferential appearance in the browsing so they get their 50 votes faster, but older stuff still shows up too. I find it enjoyable to occasionally see a very old submission while browsing, instead of only the latest. And if you want to only see 7+ or 8+ minis, that feature is already available in the galleries, along with almost every other selective option imaginable.

Repeat - the site is fine now. We don\'t need an \"elite\" site, because the elite already rise to the top here. They\'re the most talked about, they show up most often in the top 10\'s, and as I said you can choose to browse only the best scores. I think it\'s important that the best and the learners (like me) share a site, especially since everyone here is usually glad to help out a newbie or anyone aspiring to improve, as long as their questions aren\'t dumb or redundant.

If anyone thinks there\'s too much \"dross\" (a.k.a. the blood, sweat and tears of those not as skilled as the complainer) here, you should see the other sites...

I don\'t see it as a change of the current CMON but an extension. Give those who crave comments a chance to get them. And not for the elite - but those who want to change.

On second thought, I realized a vote and a comment from everybody would make for quite a lot of comments, most of which would end up being repetitive.

I don\'t think people should end up having to beg for comments in the forums. Perhaps if every ten votes automatically popped up the comment window on a mini by the time it hit 50 there would be 5 comments and the window would go away.

two tier system

I think that this exists anyhow there are the people who post pics and maybe lurk the forums for info and those that actively use the forums to promote their mini\'s. Those that use the forums generally get more coments from other forum users than those who don\'t.

I am pretty new to this site and I have to say that IMHO there is nothing wrong with the way that it is.
I think to comment before being allowed to vote may be a bad idea only because it is very easy to find faults with those of us that arn\'t up at the top end of the scoring (this is ok because it generally gets comments on how an individual can improve).
It is however very difficult to find comments telling artists whose minis are pretty damn near perfect just how they can improve. As well as the best displays are there to show us just what can be achieved with continued development and practice.
To set up a premiere league as it were will only serve IMO to widen the gap between painters and that in the long run will only harm the hobby.

You have been selected to comment on this mini. Would you like to participate?

A simple popup with this question, I think, would make viewers more likely to leave a comment. You could then have an option in the user config to turn it off, but I am not normally opposed to taking those kinds of surveys when I\'m just screwing around.

can \'o worms

I think I have to go along with the \'keep it as is\' crowd.

We signed up on CMON one year ago, and in that time, went from absolutley nowhere to #81. That is due entirely to seeing all the amazing stuff which CMON participants routinely post, and pushing ourselves to meet that standard.

We also make our living now exclusively from painting, selling, and sculpting minis... once again, CMON gets the major credit from that.

An elitist site would never allow for such a thing to happen, correct?

I aknowledge all the things people would rather see put in place for CMON, and the strange things that can happen here. However, people will always be able to defeat a system designed to prevent cheating or sniping... they just don\'t anything better to do, I suppose:flame

Also, I can understand how folks can get really tired of seeing countless numbers of 5-6 range minis. Going back one year, our first several postings barely scraped the 7\'s (mostly 5\'s).

As for the multiple postings, are people talking about many views of a poor mini, or just in general? I have had \"post more pics\" comments left on a vast majority of my minis (the dioramas in particular), and I have seen many other high rated figs with similar pleas.

Most of my dioramas are designed to be viewed from any angle, and some have interior areas which need to be shown as well. I have one of those pieces ready to post now. However, I was thinking of only posting a few, and then putting all the rest in an article. I don\'t have WIP pics, but I could put in enough text explaining how each element was rendered. I don\'t know what people would think of something like that---

The complaint is when there are 7 or 8 different submissions each with a different view of the same figure which could easily be collapsed into a single submission collage.

I merely thought disbling rotation of older posts was a way of promoting newer posts so that they don\'t \"get lost\" among the ever increasing number of posts. But... if newer minis below 50 votes already get special treatment the whole idea become irrelevant.

You always learn something new about this site! :innocent:

multiple views and resolution limits

In regards to the multiple angle shots, when you have a large diorama that has interior and exterior space, it is impossible to create a collage view without making everything very tiny & blurry.

This has happened to me many times. A really tough case was my Grond diorama, as it had 7 miniatures to go along with the battering ram itself. The base alone was nearly 3 feet long, and over a foot wide.

Since Cmon limits you to a vertical format, any horizontal format dioramas become extremely difficult to shoot.

Also, it seems that any time a post a multi angle diorama shot, nearly every comment is someone asking for more close ups!

I have avoided putting up most of my dioramas for this reason. At this point, I tend to only post the miniatures which were painted for the diorama.

Dioramas are differant, it is mainly single figures when its annoying, I have no problem with if required 1 post of the diorama, then another with views of Bob from it, then another with views of Bill

good to hear :)

Do people actually post a zillion views of a standard mini? I can see how that could be annoying:eek:

Do you think the quest for a batch of high scores is the reason for a \"mass posting\" of a single fig on a small base? There are certainly wonderful minis that warrant at least 2 views so that you can see all the details.

Of course, if you have lots of views of a \'wee bit less than spectacular\' figure... that is unfortunate.

I can\'t recall the name of the person who does all the incredible conversions of 40k figures, but it seems that they try to pack a bunch of views on one giant image. The obvious result is that the are shrunk to fit on CMON. I definitely would not mind seeing multiple postings of those:D
